Obama paying the price

The joke about the obsessively doting mother comes to mind. Watching her son parade with rows of fellow troops, she notices he is on his left foot when they are all on the right. “Why are they out of step?” she asks. So it is with Barack Obama. The nation is turning against him, yet he shouts to the heavens that he is right and the country is wrong. Mothers can get away with that sort of thing. Presidents and their parties get shellacked. (snip) Let me be clear: Obama is flirting with disaster. This and other polls show he

The Hill Associate Editor, A.B. Stoddard. stated that it “seems like [President Obama] is giving up on the job [of president].” In a panel discussion on Fox’s “Special Report,” Stoddard reported “the president is giving Americans the sense that as he gives up on Congress, he´s kind of giving up his job.” She added that the president is “getting bored in the cocoon,” “bolting from the building to go to Starbucks and Chipotle,” and “planning his post-presidency.” Stoddard also reported that the president has at times preferred to talk about the NBA playoffs instead of “policies or politics” because he’d

US Investigations Services LLC — the firm that is accused of defrauding the U.S. government by failing to provide sufficient background checks, including on one particular defense contractor now currently catching up on The Sopranos in Russia — just got a new $190 million contract from the Department of Homeland Security. DHS’ U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has retained the services of USIS to help run its immigration system. How the hell? Well, federal law requires government agencies go with the lowest bidder, and agencies are only allowed to reject companies for prior malfeasance if they’ve been barred from doing work with

Revisiting the Obama-Ayers connection

Many of you probably watched portions, if not all of, Megyn Kelly’s interviews with Bill Ayers, the unrepentant domestic terrorist of yesteryear. Kelly did her usual excellent job of pressing Ayers on his violent past. But Stanley Kurtz wishes she had pressed Ayers more about his relationship with Barack Obama. For, as Kurtz points out, Ayers and Obama had a much tighter political alliance than Ayers admitted to on Kelly’s show. Kelly focused on Ayers’ fundraiser for Obama’s first political campaign, rather than their time together on several left-leaning Chicago foundation boards. This is understandable — anyone can sit beside

The Vancouver (British Columbia) Board of Education has approved a sweeping new policy for accommodating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, two-spirit, queer, questioning and “all sexual and gender identities,” including the creation of three pronouns, replacing masculine and feminine with xe, xem and xyr (pronounced ze, zem and zur). Two spirit is an Aboriginal term which means having both feminine and masculine spirits. It´s not limited to gender expression or sexuality, but encompasses them both while incorporating a spiritual element. It´s a standalone identity, not an Aboriginal term for gay lesbian. The Vancouver Board of Education´s policy also includes making restroom and sports

Nobody likes the comments section, but few of us have interns assistants who can scour them for us. In an interview with Yahoo! News’ Katie Couric, New York Times columnist and thought leadererererer David Brooks detailed the hate mail and negative comments that confronted him when he started at the Gray Lady, criticism he now largely avoids. “I used to read them, but it was just too psychologically damaging,” Brooks said of the comments. “So then I would ask my assistant to read them.” Brooks summarized most of the “punishingly negative” comments as “Paul Krugman is great; you suck.” He

The United States added a stunning 288,000 jobs last month, sending the unemployment rate down to 6.1 percent and the Dow Jones Industrial Average shooting over 17,000 for the first time. June’s job numbers marked the fifth straight month of job gains over 200,000, the best stretch since the 1990s tech boom. A Bloomberg survey of economists expected an increase of 215,000 jobs in June. The unemployment rate dropped .2 percent to 6.1, the lowest since September 2008. May’s job report was also revised upward, showing 224,000 jobs added. The numbers follow strong reports for the Bay State last month, with

Looks like another win for the Gipper. Many news outlets are highlighting a new Quinnipiac Poll in which Barack Obama is ranked the worst president since World War II. Obama now ranks even lower than the man he blames for everything, his predecessor George W. Bush. Not so well reported is that Ronald Reagan is rated the best post-war president. The poll isn’t even close. Reagan polls at double the second-place winner, Bill Clinton, and more than four times JFK. We think we understand why. In foreign policy, Reagan’s “peace through strength” philosophy was derided at the time by liberals as reckless warmongering — but

The crackdown on unauthorized mobile-phone charges that led to a federal complaint against T-Mobile US Inc. The Federal Trade Commission filed a suit this week accusing T-Mobile US Inc. of placing “bogus charges onto customers’ bills” for items such as flirting tips, horoscopes and celebrity gossip. Vermont Attorney General William Sorrell said in an interview he may seek to get reimbursements from all the top wireless providers for fees from the practice known as cramming -- and other states may

If you listen to progressives these days, the Supreme Court has granted corporations the power to compel their employees to go to church. It has empowered corporations to tell women to throw away their contraceptives. Five of the men on the court have declared full jihad against all of the women of America. Next stop, subjugation, revocation of the right to vote, and the end of women’s rights in America. All of that is absurd, of course. The Hobby Lobby case was a too-narrow win for religious freedom and private property rights. But it’s making for amusing theatrics around the country

Forecasters say a major risk from the storm will be potentially deadly rip currents. "Don´t get brave just because you see some good waves out there," he said. When the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act” passed, the end of doctor-patient confidentiality was predictable -- but we could not have expected it to happen this soon. ObamaCare, with the aid of hospitals, insurers, banks, and private data managers, is initiating a program to track store and credit card purchases to see if people are telling the truth about their lifestyle choices. Some troubling realities have been revealed in a recent Bloomberg article. First, the idea that the hospitals, at government direction, are doing it for our own good so it’s okay. It reminds me of Reagan’s most terrifying

For years, Americans have been harangued with the “Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act” school lunch program. Under the auspices of Barack Obama’s wife’s concerns about child wellness, the federal government has rigorously limited food choices in public school cafeterias. Promoting and preserving good health has become so fundamental to American culture it now justifies stringent bureaucratic oversight to ensure that schoolchildren no longer participate in things like traditional in-classroom birthday and holiday celebrations. What’s odd is that the same supposedly über-concerned government attempting to prod America’s children toward making better food choices are also undermining their long-term health by cooperating with

The national controversy over a surge of Central American immigrants illegally crossing the U.S. border established a new battleground this week in a Southern California small town where angry crowds thwarted detained migrants from entering their community. The sentiment carried over to a raucous Wednesday night meeting at a Murrieta high school auditorium. Border patrol and immigration officials got an earful. "This is an invasion," attendee Heidi Klute said before a full house. "Why isn´t the National Guard stopping them from coming in?" California town blocks immigration buses The overflow crowd of hundreds spilled out into the school´s parking lot.

I’ve never had many charitable things to say about John Kerry, but now it’s worse; I feel sorry for him. Kerry certainly isn’t an evil fellow, merely a run-of-the-mill narcissistic opportunist who has risen to the top of the political heap. I admire his service in Vietnam; many children of privilege — did someone mention George W. Bush? — found ways to avoid the war. If he had any stellar accomplishments during his 28 years in the Senate, they are not etched in my memory. He proved to be an inept presidential candidate in 2004. But now, the spin goes,

This may explain why I was having an affair with a married 36-year-old sound mixer whom I’d met on a film shoot a couple of months earlier. I’d had only one serious boyfriend by this time and recently had been asked for the first time, “Can I buy you a drink?” by a man. (He was an actor in a film I’d worked on the summer before; he asked everybody that question, but still it felt like progress.) Somehow, by that tender age, I had convinced myself
