A federal judge ruled Wednesday that the Libyan militant charged in the 2012 deadly attacks in Benghazi, Libya, will remain in a U.S. detention center until his trial. Federal prosecutors made the request, saying they have forensic evidence and statements by Ahmed Abu Khatallah linking him to the terror attacks, in which four Americans were killed at a U.S. outpost in Benghazi. The ruling was made by Magistrate Judge Deborah A. Robinson, who also told Khatallah’s court-appointed lawyers that they reserve the right to revisit the issue. A defense lawyer attempted to dismiss prosecutors’ arguments that his client was armed

In a statement posted Wednesday on the retailer´s corporate blog, interim CEO John Mulligan said that Target wants a "safe and inviting" atmosphere for its shoppers and employees. "Bringing firearms to Target creates an environment that is at odds with the family-friendly shopping and work experience we strive to create," he said. If things were bad between Tea Party activists and the Mississippi Republican establishment before last Tuesday´s Senate primary runoff, it´s about to get a lot uglier. State Senator Chris McDaniel defeated Sen. Thad Cochran in the first round of the Senate GOP primary but then the aging incumbent staged an unexpected surge to win the run-off. Cochran´s surge was fueled by cross-over Democrats voting in the GOP run-off and before the votes were all counted, rumors were rife about walk-around money and other voting irregularities. Vote-buying and news buying Earlier this week, Breitbart News posted a story based on claims of a black

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has reportedly been charged with corruption and influence peddling after being held for questioning for 15 hours. Mr. Sarkozy was held at Nanterre, just outside of Paris, where he was questioned on allegations that he violated campaign finance laws and abused his power to manipulate the legal system. Authorities officially charged him, his lawyer and a senior magistrate early Wednesday morning, according to several news outlets. Prosecutors accused Mr. Sarkozy of appointing a magistrate in Monaco, Gilbert Azibert, to a senior judicial position in exchange for under-the-table information regarding campaign finance probes against him.

USMNT goalie Tim Howard, whom Twitter nominated for president Tuesday afternoon, spoke to an adoring all-male Morning Joe panel Wednesday morning from Brazil, praising his teammates, picking Germany as his favorite for the competition, and casting doubt over the permanence of America’s soccer fever. “Because of the enormity of the World Cup, it’s hard to sustain that day-to-day,” Howard said. “But we should proud of ourselves as a country. The way that we’ve rallied behind our team has been incredible. I play in Europe, I see some of these European countries, unfortunately they don’t get behind their team as our

Poll: Obama "Worst President"

A terrible polling season just got humiliating for President Obama. On top of collapsing personal and job approval numbers, and a stunning loss in public confidence, a new Quinnipiac poll shows that the American people now see a president who rode into office on a wave of hope and change as the worst president since World War II. Adding insult to injury, in hindsight, only 38% of voters believe Obama is doing a better job than his 2012 Republican rival Mitt Romney would have. A plurality of 45% believe Romney would be doing a better job than Obama. When asked who the

President Obama´s approval numbers are in the cellar, a new Quinnipiac University survey just dubbed him the worst president in six decades, so maybe it´s no surprise that analyst and pollster John Zogby is asking: “Is it all over for him?” Sign Up for the Paul Bedard newsletter! Armed with new numbers that are depressing to an already deflated White House, Zogby on Wednesday found that most don´t believe that Obama can lead the country and he compared the president to Bill Clinton following the Democrat´s sweeping 1994 Congressional loss and when former White House Correspondent Brit Hume asked if

It’s only Tuesday, but folks we have this week’s Loop Quote of the Week Winner sealed. At a White House reception for LGBT Pride Month, President Obama was praising outgoing executive pastry chef Bill Yosses for his ever so sweet baking skills. Then the president suggested that perhaps Yosses’ pies were so addicting because of a secret ingredient. “I don’t know what he does, whether he puts crack in them, or…,” Obama said. The first lady shot her husband a look, laughed, pursed her lips and shook her head with almost an eye roll. “No, he doesn’t,” she said, head

AFL-CIO To Obama: Unilaterally

The AFL-CIO wants President Barack Obama to unilaterally give work permits and temporary amnesty to most of the country´s illegal immigrants. On Tuesday, a day after Obama used a Rose Garden speech to say he would try to change as many immigration laws as possible on his own, the labor group that purportedly protects workers recommended that the Obama administration enact four executive actions. Its top recommendation was for the Department of Homeland Security to "grant affirmative relief with work authorization to individuals who are low priorities for removal or eligible for prosecutorial discretion under existing DHS policies." Los Angeles - It’s not just a people problem: Growing rates of obesity in pets have led to the emergence of fat farms offering ‘‘pawlates,’’ ‘´doga’’ and ‘‘Barko Polo,’’ doggie versions of Pilates, yoga and Marco Polo to help slim down man’s best friend. In the U.S., 53 percent of dogs are overweight or obese, up from 45 percent four years ago. In cats, the figure is almost 58 percent, said Dr. Ernie Ward, a veterinarian and founder of the Association of Pet Obesity Prevention in Calabash, North Carolina. Overweight pets can suffer diabetes, joint problems, heart disease and decreased life expectancy, just like obese people, he said.

The Federal Election Commission is looking into whether Mississippi Conservatives PAC violated campaign finance law in its bid to help re-elect Mississippi U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran. The inquiry, sent as a Request for Additional Information, or RFAI, provides another bit of drama in a heated primary battle in which Cochran narrowly defeated state senator Chris McDaniel. The FEC, which monitors spending in federal elections, notified the political action committee that it may have failed to file one or more “24 hour reports,” which track “last minute” independent expenditures. Political action committees are required to file the reports within the 24-hour window for any

(WISCONSIN)– The United States government is actually suing a private American business for discriminating against Hispanic and Asian employees because they don’t speak English on the job. It involves a Green Bay Wisconsin metal and plastic manufacturer that fired a group of Hmong and Hispanic workers over their English skills, “even though those skills were not needed to perform their jobs,” according to the feds. More importantly, forcing employees to speak English in the U.S. violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, says the Obama administration. Here’s the twisted explanation from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the

Congressman Bridenstine said, “There is no excuse for denying a Federal Representative from Oklahoma access to a federal facility in Oklahoma where unaccompanied children are being held. Any Member of Congress should have the legal authority to visit a federal youth detention facility without waiting three weeks." Two years ago, I broke up with Facebook. It was one of the best things I’ve ever done. Like any big break up, I had complex reasons, but the biggest was that I simply did not trust Facebook. The relationship started out with the euphoria of new love, but over the years turned to something resembling abuse. Facebook eerily insists on invading your life. It insinuates itself into your phone, it peeps through your contacts, wants to know your location. It tracks you even when you’re not on Facebook. Then it sells you to the highest bidder. Representative Jim Bridenstine (R., Okla.) was told he could schedule an appointment for July 21. ““What are they trying to hide?” Bridenstine said after the incident. ”Do they not want the children to speak with Members of Congress? As a Navy pilot, I have been involved in operations countering illicit human trafficking. I would like to know to whom these children are being released.”

‘Immigrants bring disease’ is an old prejudice, but it turns out some of the thousands of children streaming across the border have brought H1N1 with them. Here’s something you don’t hear a journalist say very often: I blew it. I was wrong. I dismissed out of hand the suggestion by anti-immigration activists and right-wing pundits that among the worries associated with the “border kids”—the estimated 52,000 children and teenagers who have crossed the U.S.-Mexico border in the last year or so—was that they carried communicable diseases. “How original” was probably my first thought. Immigrants and fears about disease go together like beans and

In his latest attempt to get Congress to spend money to upgrade America´s roads and bridges, President Obama debuted a new sales pitch Tuesday: patriotism. Standing beside the Francis Scott Key Bridge on a sweltering afternoon, Obama paid homage to the writer of "The Star-Spangled Banner" in a speech about the Highway Trust Fund. "Economic patriotism" dictates that Congress should help states repair and rebuild crucial infrastructure, Obama said, and thus "reward American workers and the businesses that hire them."A good place to start, he said, is the heavily used bridge named for the Baltimore lawyer who wrote the lyrics

A Burger King in San Francisco has taken its support of LGBT pride week to a new level and released a special sandwich — the Proud Whopper. Burger King is already on record as supporting gay marriage, issuing in the past a “Be Your Way” slogan that played off its popular “Have it Your Way” message. But the specialty sandwich is a new thumbs-up campaign for gays, Time reported. The Proud Whopper is no different in taste, texture or ingredient than the regular Whopper — the message the chain is hoping to convey. The Proud Whopper wrapper reads, once opened, “We are all the same inside.”

While Americans get ready for the thousands of fireworks shows that will be occurring across the country this weekend, Republicans are warning that pending federal water regulations could ruin fireworks displays next year. The Environmental Protection Agency is trying to expand its authority under the Clean Water Act. Republicans warn that the agency’s proposal to expand the definition of “waters of the United States” could allow the EPA to regulate bodies of water on private property. Republicans are now warning that EPA water rules could threaten fireworks by allowing environmental activists to sue and shut down shows across the country.

LONDON -- Artist Tracey Emin has sold her bed - and the disheveled sheets, empty vodka bottles, cigarette butts and discarded condoms were part of the lucrative deal. Emin´s artwork "My Bed" sold for 2.54 million pounds ($4.4 million) at a London auction Tuesday, more than double the pre-sale estimate and four times the previous record for the artist. Emin, who has mined her tumultuous personal life for some of her best-known works, attended the auction and grinned when the hammer came down. The work was sold by collector Charles Saatchi, an early supporter of Emin and other modern British artists.
