Louisiana´s 2014 Senate race now has a contract. The question will be who signs on. Echoing a campaign tactic that worked famously for the Republicans in 1994, retired Col. Rob Maness will unveil his "Contract With Louisiana" later today in Houma. Maness acknowledged the Contract With America which helped clarify the Republican message in the 1994 mid-term elections in which the GOP took control of the House of Representatives for the first time in decades was on his mind when crafting his own. A student at Harvard´s Kennedy School of Government right after the Contract With America´s success, Maness said the concept

One of the first things you notice when you move to Washington DC from the rest of America is how the specialized vocabulary of the Beltway dominates everyday conversation. Washington is the only place I know of where you can have complete conversations conducted almost wholly in acronyms and seemingly plain terms not used elsewhere: “I’ll be sending out an RFP for the OMB’s reverse markup of the omnibus stopgap DQA appropriation for the EPA’s CAA double topspin rejection of the CR.” (Perhaps there’s a little of this on Wall Street and in Hollywood, but those industries are situated within

Applications for insurance coverage through President Obama´s health care law submitted in the final three months of 2013 contained millions of inconsistencies in which information such as income and immigration status could not be independently verified by the federal government, according to a June report from the inspector general of the Department of Health and Human Services. The inconsistencies may have resulted in individuals receiving an improper amount of subsidies, or subsidies that they shouldn´t have been eligible for in the first place — something that could require them to repay the money in future tax bills.

I have been staying with my parents recently, while my house is being renovated. I have also been breaking out in hives. (Snip) Experts use the term "social allergens" to describe behaviors or habits that drive others nuts. Some of these actions begin to annoy us soon after we meet someone. Others get to us slowly and surely over time. Imagine a heehaw laugher. A knuckle cracker. A braggart who always tries to one-up you. A person who thinks loud belching is a compliment to the chef. As with a lot of allergies, it´s the repetition that gets to us.

Early research revealed that many LBGTQ youth in the foster care system question whether their environments are safe spaces. The kindergartners of the Class of 2026, who finished their first year in Fairfax County schools Wednesday, constitute the largest and one of the most ethnically, culturally and socioeconomically diverse groups of students the county has seen, a fact that school system administrators say could pose significant challenges in the decade

HONG KONG – Tens of thousands of Hong Kong residents marched Tuesday through the streets of the former British colony to push for greater democracy in a rally fueled by anger over Beijing´s recent warning that it holds the ultimate authority over the southern Chinese financial center. Organizers expected the crowd to swell to at least 150,000 and were hoping as many as 500,000 would turn out to call for reforms allowing residents to elect their leader. The protest comes days after nearly 800,000 residents voted in a mock referendum aimed at bolstering support for full democracy.

He quickly realized the blood was spurting in rhythm with the man´s heart and cardiac arrest was just moments away. The CIA failed to provide adequate warning of the recent Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant military incursion into Iraq despite having a significant presence of agency officers in the country, according to U.S. officials and security analysts. Critics of the agency said the intelligence failure was made worse by a failure of the Obama administration to recognize the threat posed to the country by the ISIL, which last week renamed itself simply the Islamic State (IS) and declared its captured territory in Syria and Iraq is now a “caliphate.” The so-called caliphate region is under harsh Islamic law and led

When Washington imposed sanctions in June 2012 on Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, he dismissed it as an empty gesture. Two years later, Shekau’s skepticism appears well founded: his Islamic militant group is now the biggest security threat to Africa´s top oil producer, is richer than ever, more violent and its abductions of women and children continue with impunity. As the United States, Nigeria and others struggle to track and choke off its funding, Reuters interviews with more than a dozen current and former U.S. officials who closely follow Boko Haram provide the most complete picture to date of how the group

Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Ted Cruz (R-Texas) — “expressing the sense of the Senate concerning the humanitarian crisis in Syria and neighboring countries, resulting humanitarian and development challenges, and the urgent need for a political solution to the crisis.” The resolution noted that the
