Obama administration knew that veterans’
personal info was at risk, security

The Obama administration’s Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) knew that a breach of veterans’ personal information was “practically unavoidable” months before it happened in January, according to an internal VA risk assessment that also said the department’s security programs are “non-compliant” with three federal laws. House Veterans Affairs chairman Rep. Jeff Miller recently wrote a letter demanding VA secretary Eric Shinseki take steps to address software glitches like the kind that plagued the department’s eBenefits portal, which in January exposed the “medical and financial information” of more than 5,000 veterans to anyone able to log on to the portal. This breach came

Fact Check: Thad Cochran Hasn´t

Sen. Thad Cochran´s (R-MS) spokesman says he´s voted “against amnesty in every chance he´s gotten.” However, a review of his voting record shows that´s not true. Cochran voted against an amendment to strip amnesty provisions from a 2006 bill, as well as against several amendments to strengthen border enforcement. In 2006, an immigration bill offered by Sen. Arlen Specter, then a Republican, included amnesty for certain types of illegal immigrants. Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) offered an amendment to remove the amnesty language from the bill. “The Vitter amendment would remove provisions authorizing the ‘earned legalization’ and ‘agricultural worker’ amnesty schemes

Establishment Republicans are still seeing the upside to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, despite the many scandals that came to Trenton in 2014. Almost two months removed from the initial Bridgegate revelations, Christie is appearing at a Republican Governors Association fundraiser with Mitt Romney. According to the Washington Post, Romney is confirmed to be in town for the event both as a guest for the fundraising event, which is scheduled for Thursday, and a speaker. He is expected to deliver remarks to the attendees and later "huddle" with donors and politicians attending the event. The Massachusetts trip is the first in

It wasn’t the Revenge of the Creature. But at the minimum it seemed like the Revenge of Creation. (Snip) The floods were apparently not only inevitable, but foreseeable. The chief problem to preventing them lay in a policy which maintained that active flood control was bad. Nature treats humans as part of the natural world but environmentalists treat nature as part of the political world. Many a misunderstanding arises therefrom. Alas the rains and the seasons refuse to read Labor Party and Green Left manifestos and the results are often inconvenient. And so the floods came. The indifference of the

Supreme Court weighs EPA authority

The Supreme Court on Monday will hear challenges to an Obama administration greenhouse gas regulation. The program in question is the Environmental Protection Agency´s permitting process for industry sources, which includes coal-fired power plants, chemical facilities and oil refineries. In 2010, the EPA said its emissions standards for passenger cars "triggered" a need to regulate greenhouse gas pollutants under permits for new facilities because the gases were deemed an endangerment to "public health or welfare." Under the Clean Air Act, the EPA is allowed to review permits to determine if necessary technologies that would help limit pollution are being used

Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace was not pleased that National Security Advisor Susan Rice’s first appearance on the Sunday shows since September 2012, when she said that the attack on the American compound in Benghazi was due in part to a spontaneous response to an anti-Islam video, came only on NBC’s Meet the Press, rather than his own show. “Of course, Fox has led the way in questioning how the adminstration handled Benghazi,” Wallace said. “Perhaps Susan Rice didn’t want to answer the tough questions we would have asked.” Wallace said his initial desire to have Rice on the

Obama ribs ambitious governors at White

President Obama poked a little fun at certain state politicians who harbor presidential ambitions during a dinner he hosted at the White House Sunday night for the National Governors Association. Obama began his remarks by telling the governors to make themselves at home during their time that evening at the White House. “I´m sure some of you are thinking that´s been the plan all along,” he said to laughs. He then read a quote about a governor he swore he would be contented to remain in that office. “Of course, that was Teddy Roosevelt,” Obama quipped. “I guess plans change.” Wisconsin Gov. The New York Times confirms what we have long reported: Piers Morgan will lose his 9 p.m. CNN show this year. Noting Morgan’s abysmal ratings as of late, reporter David Carr spoke directly with the British TV host and came up with the following revelations: Mr. Morgan said last week that he and Mr. Zucker had been talking about the show’s failure to connect and had decided to pull the plug, probably in March. His show, he conceded, was not performing as he had hoped and was nearing its end. “It’s been a painful period and lately we have taken

On This Week With George Stephanopoulos, former George W Bush campaign director Matthew Dowd predicted that Arizona Governor Jan Brewer would veto a just-passed bill that would allow discrimination against LGBT customers, and also read the impetus behind the bill into the history of people using religion to mask exploitation and repression. “I think in the end Governor Brewer is going to veto this,” Dowd said. “It’s an easy veto to do because of the things going in the business economy there.” “This is one of those problems where people use religion as a way to enforce discriminatory practices,” he continued. “People

America´s ruling class has been experiencing more pushback than usual lately. It just might be a harbinger of things to come. First, in response to widespread protests last week, the Department of Homeland Security canceled plans to build a nationwide license plate database. Many local police departments already use license-plate readers that track every car as it passes traffic signals or pole-mounted cameras. Specially equipped police cars even track cars parked on the street or even in driveways. The DHS put out a bid request for a system that would have gone national, letting the federal government track millions of

MSNBC host Chris Matthews said on Sunday that Democrats could lose ten Senate seats in the midterm elections. “To the Democrats, this election, a rosy scenario is to lose five Senate seats, not six,” he said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “They could lose 10. And so what they´ve said is, ‘If we´re going to lose 10 seats potentially,’ and they could well do that, a big sweep, they´re going to the battle stations.” “Nothing on Social Security. All-out talk about minimum wage. Nothing on trade. … Nothing´s going to get done, because both parties have gone to their base,”

ROCK HILL, S.C.--U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham has begun his campaign for re-election in earnest. He´s opened a half-dozen campaign offices across South Carolina in the past week. Graham faces five opponents in the June primary, and it´s shaping up to be the biggest fight of Graham´s Senate career. Still, Graham is confident in winning a third term. He says he has a quiet majority of Republicans in his corner that can outvote the loud voices of opposition. Graham´s campaign has $7.6 million in the bank, while none of his five opponents have more than $260,000.

There have been times when the CNN host Piers Morgan didn’t seem to like America very much — and American audiences have been more than willing to return the favor. Three years after taking over for Larry King, Mr. Morgan has seen the ratings for “Piers Morgan Live” hit some new lows, drawing a fraction of viewers compared with competitors at Fox News and MSNBC. Editorial cartoons often aren´t pretty, to paraphrase Steve Martin´s observation about the perils of comedy. But a cartoon in the Opinion section of today´s New York Times is downright ugly. The cartoon, alluding to this year´s brutal winter, suggests U.S. Department of Commerce "Strategies for Dealing With the 2014 Icicle Surplus." Among them are using icicles as "locally sourced hydration devices," "temporary doorsteps," and "brainteasers for dogs." Then comes a suggestion that one immediately looks at again, in disgust and disbelief -- icicles can also be used as "self-destructing sabers for dispatching climate-change deniers."

It’s hard to understand exactly why Susan Rice is still refusing to admit fault about her lies about the Benghazi attack. When asked this morning on Meet the Press by David Gregory whether she had any regrets about appearing on four network news shows the Sunday after the 9/11/12 attacks that took the lives of four Americans and telling the nation that what happened was the result of a demonstration against a video, Rice said she had none: David, no. Because what I said to you that morning, and what I did every day since, was to share the best

Another interesting Second Amendment case is coming up before the courts, and yes… it’s from Florida again. Wells Fargo is facing a legal challenge from one of their bank managers who was fired for coming to work while carrying her weapon concealed. Ivette Ros grew up in a house where her father kept guns. For her, it was a natural step to get a concealed weapons permit and then to carry a 9 mm handgun. The 37-year-old Tampa resident is a single mother of three children and said she carries the gun for safety. “It’s just something about having it

A mysterious polio-like syndrome has affected as many as 25 California children, leaving them with paralyzed limbs and little hope of recovery "What´s we´re seeing now is bad. The best-case scenario is complete loss of one limb, the worst is all four limbs, with respiratory insufficiency, as well. It´s like the old polio," said Keith Van Haren, a pediatric neurologist at Lucile Packard Children´s Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif. The first known case appeared in 2012. Sofia Jarvis in Berkeley began to experience wheezing and difficulty breathing. The 2-year-old spent days in the intensive care unit at Children´s Hospital Oakland.
