Novi Petrivtsi, Ukraine — The opulent residence of President Viktor Yanukovych has always been a closely guarded secret — and a symbol of the alleged corruption at Ukraine’s highest levels. On Saturday, after he fled the capital and its gates were thrown open, thousands streamed into the compound to get a first-hand look. Inside the walled compound known as Mezhyhirya, posh mansions stood amid manicured lawns. There were parks dotted with statues, ponds with fountains and wild ducks, a tennis court, a golf course and a colonnaded pavilion. As throngs of ordinary Ukrainians got their first look at Yanukovych’s luxurious estate, many

Of all the myriad myths spread at light speed by the enemies of Christianity and astonishingly believed without much critical thought by vast numbers of people, one of the most surreal must be the idea that Nazism was Christian. (snip)The danger of a return to values and ideas espoused by the Nazis, that we hear so much about, is real, but doesn´t come so much from the direction of the usual suspects, "Islamophobic", neo-Nazi groups, as from a far more mainstream, Leftist direction. The threat has two sources. One is the rise of Islam in the West -- aided and abetted

NFL Ban on Off-Duty Officers Carrying

The NFL´s ban on allowing off-duty police officers to carry guns into stadiums has at least two exceptions--the two NFL stadiums in Texas. According to CBS DFW, "Texas state law overrides the NFL policy. As long as officers attending the game check in at a specific gate and inform Security where they are sitting, they can have their gun." This exception to the NFL´s gun ban will apply to the Dallas Cowboys´ AT&T Stadium in Arlington and the Houston Texans´ Reliant Stadium. The Dallas Police Association´s Ron Pinkston agrees with the Texas law: "Our officers are 24/7, on or off

BEAUMONT, Texas—On the night before early voting began in Texas, a few hundred conservatives gather in a Dallas Hilton ballroom to pray for victory. They start arriving at 5:30 p.m., some of them buying hotel-priced beverages from a pop-up bar, some of them moving immediately to the tables where they can sign up to help Katrina Pierson get elected to Congress. I pick up a door-hanger, one of thousands that will be deployed over the next week. It’s like a Bayeux Tapestry of Tea Party history. There’s the candidate, and beneath her are celebrities outdoing each other with superlatives for

As Black History Month draws to a close, we must not forget a great American that should be honored and studied the whole year through. Booker T. Washington, author of the autobiography Up from Slavery, presents solutions as applicable today as they were in his pivotal time in history. In his 1895 address to the Atlanta Exposition (a gathering of mostly-white leaders in the fields of commerce and industry), Mr. Washington, just 30 years after the close of the Civil War, said:

The thing I like about most sports are the rules and how the winner is determined are pretty unambiguous. Score more points, cross the finish line first, jump higher, whatever, and you win. Should there be any foul play or skirting of the rules, there’s an official or referee there to cry foul. It’s simple and, to borrow a word from President Obama, fair. Politics, on the other hand, is quite different. Truth used to be the most potent weapon in the game of politics. It was the best tool with which to garner the most votes, and whoever got the

There’s a new exorcist in town. Four decades after the profession gained popular prominence in the gory horror flick “The Exorcist,” the Catholic Church is training a new legion of demon-fighting priests. The Rev. David Fleming of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Urbandale is one of 50 U.S. priests recently chosen to train in the rite of exorcism. Fleming was named the official exorcist of the Diocese of Des Moines. It is the church’s first effort in the United States to coordinate a “comprehensive and systematic formation process for this particular ministry,” Fleming told the Catholic Mirror, Des Moines’

In its two-decade lifespan, Netflix has led three revolutions that have changed how people watch movies and television — from videotape to DVD, from DVD to streaming, and from televisions and movie theaters to video-enabled devices. As the company rolls out the second season of its hit series “House of Cards” and sees its stock price hit record highs, let’s look at some of the folklore surrounding what looks like the future of entertainment.1. Netflix was started after one of its founders incurred a huge late fee from his local video store. The story of the $40 late fee for a

The crisis in Ukraine is a reminder of how volatile and dangerous the world can be. Scores of protesters have been shot and killed. Deals have been struck and ignored; the opposition has seized control of the capital Kiev, and secured the release from prison of Yulia Tymoshenko but the president yesterday denounced this as a coup and promised to remain in office. Whatever happens over the next few days, the country remains perilously torn between the Western half that looks towards Europe and the Easterners who look towards Mother Russia. Such troubles are certainly not limited to Ukraine.

HOUSTON — It’s the epic GOP primary that wasn’t. Tea party activists hoped to oust Texas Sen. John Cornyn this year in an early-March contest that could have burnished their credibility heading into the midterms. Instead, Cornyn’s best-known challenger, Rep. Steve Stockman, has gone missing on the campaign trail, dogged by unflattering stories about his past and his ethics. It’s a disappointment for many national political watchers who had pulled out the popcorn for this race. Stockman has a penchant for making inflammatory statements — one of his bumper stickers read: “If babies had guns they wouldn’t be aborted.” In December, he

Outgoing Texas Gov. Rick Perry recently spoke with MSNBC host Abby Huntsman for a lengthy interview about his politics, policy preferences, and his possible successors. When Huntsman asked if he could foresee Democratic gubernatorial candidate, state Sen. Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth), residing in the governor’s mansion, Perry sidestepped the question before saying that Davis’ election, like other fanciful outcomes, was “never going to happen.” “Can you see Wendy Davis living here?” Huntsman asked Perry amid a tour of the governor’s residence. “You can see anybody living here,” Perry replied. “The issue is, are they going to win an election.” “Texas is a conservative

The train wreck continues in the conservative world populated by groups such as Heritage Action and the Senate Conservatives Fund. One of their top candidates, Milton Wolf, who is seeking to bump off popular conservative incumbent Sen. Pat Roberts in Kansas, is trailing by a huge margin, 49 to 23 in the most recent poll. This is after he and the right-wing chorus made a huge to-do about Roberts not living in the state. (In fact, he travels home frequently and is a familiar face.) For the third time in four years, the Republican Party finds itself politically positioned to win control of the Senate. More than eight months before President Obama’s second midterm election, his job approval ratings are stuck in the low 40s as voters continue to frown on his signature domestic initiative, the Affordable Care Act. And the majority of contests likely to determine the outcome of the 2014 campaign for Senate control are being fought in red states. But as in 2010 and 2012, when the GOP nominated flawed candidates who torpedoed their party’s chance to demote Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.),

The protesters in Venezuela do not seek anything extraordinary: They demand to be secure in their homes and their persons, they demand an end to current shortages of staple foods and other goods in the country, and they demand the right to free speech. That these things should be considered a challenge to the Maduro regime is what is extraordinary, along with the regime’s brutal response to the protests — both speak to the character of the current Venezuelan government. If honoring such basic human decencies requires a regime change in Caracas, that is more a reflection on the current

There are so many bad features of Obamacare we were mislead on that we’re going to have come up for a euphemism for lying – maybe the administration is “truth impaired”? “Honesty-challenged?” The latest comes from just one industry reporting how many jobs were lost because of the medical device tax that was included in the bill in order to raise money to pay for its poorly designed ponzi scheme: The Advanced Medical Technology Association surveyed its members to determine the number of lost jobs since the 2.3 percent excise tax on medical devices took effect in January 2013, raising about $3.8

WASHINGTON — President Obama plans to announce on Tuesday the opening of two new manufacturing institutes in the Chicago and Detroit areas as part of a larger plan to use public-private partnerships to advance his agenda despite opposition from Republicans in Congress. Several federal agencies will join forces with companies and universities to run the institutes, which will be devoted to bridging the gap between applied research and product development, according to an administration official familiar with the plans. Each institute will function as a “teaching factory,” the official said, and will provide training for workers while also helping companies get the

He was a tireless advocate for Second Amendment rights and will always be remembered by the NRA faithful for his “cold, dead hands” speech delivered at the 2000 NRA Annual Meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina. To hear the left tell it, the right is seething with hatred, ready to erupt into violence at any moment. Last week provided a good reminder that one of the biggest sources of political violence in this country has long been and remains labor unions. This week, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York offered continuing evidence of the student debt crisis. Outstanding student debt again topped $1 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2013, making it the second-largest pool of debt in the nation behind mortgages. This has tripled in just a decade, as higher-education prices increased faster than medical costs, up 500 percent since 1985. While delinquency rates for all loans have trended downward for the past three years, student loan delinquencies have surged; currently 11.5 percent of all student loans are 90 days behind or more. James Carville once shockingly demonstrated the left´s disdain for the morals of the poor, saying, "Drag a hundred-dollar bill through a trailer park, you never know what you´ll find."
