Rewriting the Gettysburg Address
New York Times, by Martin P. Johnson    Original Article

Abraham Lincoln did not give the Gettysburg Address on Nov. 19, 1863 — at least, not the one engraved on the Lincoln Memorial, the one memorized by millions the world over. Lincoln actually wrote the words recognized today as the Gettysburg Address months after the cemetery dedication, during a full and complete revision of his speech that he finished in February 1864. Lincoln’s revisions added about 14 percent more words to his original delivery text, the so-called Nicolay Draft, adding several key passages. But no addition was more important than the words “under God”: Lincoln had spoken those words, and others

Football player Michael Sam and basketball player Jason Collins each received a flurry of attention this week. None of it is due to their athletic talent or professional careers, but rather it is about their sexual preference. In both cases, that they have come out as gay is the most important aspect of all of the stories. Mentioning their sexual preferences as the most interesting aspect of the story, some excerpts from the last 48 hours: FoxSports.com: “Michael Sam’s historic NFL journey…” CBS New York: “…would be the first openly gay player in the NBA.” Sporting News: “With Michael Sam announcing himself as gay…” USA

Without Texas, President Obama would be facing a much worse economic situation, and Governor Rick Perry is holding out for a thank you. With the Lone Star state leading the nation in job creation the last five years, as well as creating nearly one-third of all American jobs over the last decade, Perry boasted about his state’s success during his time in office. “If it hadn’t been for Texas, the United States, for those mid-wage jobs in particular, would be underwater,” he told MSNBC. “I keep waiting for President Obama to call me and say, ‘Hey, thanks for saving our bacon

Kochs vs. Steyer: When
‘evil’ campaign cash is OK
Washington Times, by Editorial    Original Article

Democrats love to throw mud balls at the Koch brothers — David and Charles — because they’re successful entrepreneurs, and they’re generous with groups that promote the free-market values that enabled them to succeed. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee even sponsors a website, StoptheKochBrothers.com. The Brothers Koch are accused of “planning a GOP takeover in 2014” by spending $27 million on political campaigns around the country. The Democratic message is that wealthy Republicans should stay out of politics. When Tom Steyer, the billionaire onetime hedge-fund manager, promised the other day to spend up to $50 million of his own money

Afghanistan will revert to being a

Afghanistan could become a future terrorist haven when the U.S. withdraws unless a larger and more expensive Afghan security force is planned, a study has warned. The report sketched a scenario in which the Taliban would seek to capitalize on the absence of foreign combat forces and press its campaign to regain political power in Kabul. ´History suggests that the Taliban will use sanctuaries in Pakistan to regenerate their capabilities as military pressure on the movement declines,´ the report said. As a first step, in 2015-16, the Taliban may put additional pressure on Afghan security forces in rural areas, expand

The $150,000-a-year salary of the new executive director of One Fund Boston will be paid out of the charity’s own budget — marking a significant shift from the organization’s beginnings, when every dollar donated went directly to victims’ families and survivors of the marathon bombings. “The mission of the fund has not changed,” said One Fund spokeswoman Dot Joyce. “It continues to grow and with that growth comes some administrative cost. And those decisions were made by the board in consultation with the survivor community and what’s best in meeting their needs going forward.” Joyce could not say how much money is

Judge rips feds in Sherrod-Breitbart lawsuit

A federal judge delivered a severe tongue-lashing to a Justice Department lawyer Thursday, slamming the Obama Administration for its handling of demands for government records in the libel lawsuit fired Agriculture Department employee Shirley Sherrod filed against conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart. During a 40-minute hearing, U.S. District Court Judge Richard Leon repeatedly ripped into the government and DOJ trial counsel David Glass for resisting requests from both sides in the case for government files and e-mails that might be of use in the litigation. At one point, the judge snapped at Glass, ordering him to "sit right down." Sherrod was

James O’Keefe and his Project Veritas captured Battleground Texas organizer Jennifer Langoria admitting that the group uses its voter registration drives as data-mining operations for their political operations. Whatever one thinks of Project Veritas, it did not put words into Battleground Texas’ mouth. “So every time we register someone to vote we keep their name and number,” Langoria says. According to Texas election law, it is unlawful to transcribe, copy, or otherwise record a telephone number furnished on a voter registration application. Battleground Texas has, therefore, been caught in what appears to be election fraud. It’s not the first time. Earlier this year, Project

Unremarked, the EU is about to hold its first federal elections. The European Parliament has been quietly sucking in more power for decades, but has so far lacked the supreme attribute of a federal legislature, namely the right to appoint a federal government. [Snip] In the short clip above, the Alliance of European Conservatives and Reformists, of which I´m Secretary-General, explains why it won´t be fielding a candidate. You´ll see from the reaction of the people we asked how little connection there is between the Euro-parties and the voters they purport to represent. We have no intention of legitimising a

Kiev, Ukraine -- In Ukraine, neither protesters, opposition politicians nor embattled President Viktor Yanukovych had what they wanted Saturday after a week of bloodshed. Enthusiasm was muted for the peace deal brokered among them a day before by the foreign ministers of Poland, Germany and France. Hours before they signed the deal, Poland´s Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski warned them not to expect perfection. "All sides need to remember that compromise means getting less than 100%," he said in a message on Twitter. If he upholds his end of the deal, Yanukovych will lose many of his powers soon -- and his office completely --

John Kerry’s phony climate war
New York Post, by Rich Lowry    Original Article

Secretary of State John Kerry is reporting for duty in the war against climate change. In a speech in Jakarta, Indonesia, he declared climate change “another weapon of mass destruction.” Indeed, in what might be news to the 50-megaton hydrogen bomb, he declared it “perhaps the world’s most fearsome weapon of mass destruction.” If climate change does not consider itself duly warned, it has only itself to blame. John Kerry has proven himself fully capable of supporting hostilities against dangerous enemies of the United States (that he then regrets, and campaigns against — but that’s another story).

Since former Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke uttered the word "taper" in June 2013, emerging-market stocks and currencies have taken a beating. It is not clear why talk of (thus far) modest reductions in the Fed´s large-scale asset-purchase program should have had such big repercussions outside the United States. The best economic explanation is that capital has been flowing out of emerging markets in anticipation of future rises in U.S. interest rates, of which the taper is a harbinger. While plausible, that cannot be the whole story. For it is not only U.S. monetary policy that is being tapered. Even more

If you find yourself suddenly gaining access to a time machine, what’s the first thing you’d do? If you said “kill Adolf Hitler”, then congratulations; you’re a science-fiction character. Actually, the whole “access to a time machine” thing suggested that already, but the desire to kill Hitler clinches it. Any time-travelling sci-fi character (at least ones created by Western society) seems to want to kill Hitler, so much so that there’s a trope about how it’s impossible. That attempting to kill Hitler has become such a common sci-fi plot device speaks volumes. What about Stalin? He was arguably worse, killing 20

The latest Fox News poll finds that most Americans think Congress should continue to investigate the Obama administration’s handling of the terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. The attack took place in Benghazi, Libya on September 11, 2012 and resulted in the deaths of a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans. Sixty-six percent of voters want Congress to keep investigating the White House’s handling of Benghazi. That includes 50 percent of Democrats, 68 percent of independents and 83 percent of Republicans. About a third opposes lawmakers continuing to investigate the attack (31 percent).

WASHINGTON — This week, President Barack Obama promoted tougher fuel efficiency standards for trucks. He touted progress on initiatives to strengthen the U.S. patent system. And he signed an executive order intended to speed up the process for approving import or export cargo. Welcome to Obama´s self-proclaimed "year of action," where hardly a day goes by without the president and his top advisers trumpeting policy initiatives the White House is undertaking without the help of Congress. The mostly modest actions — far shy of the sweeping immigration overhaul Obama hoped for this year — put into sharp focus the president´s limitations as

President Obama’s stimulus may have boosted the economy when it passed in 2009, but it’s now beginning to take a toll and will soon begin to leave the economy worse off than if it had never passed, according to a new report Friday by the Congressional Budget Office. Mr. Obama signed the stimulus into law five years ago this week, vowing it would help rescue the economy from its post-Wall Street collapse tailspin, and saying it would save millions of jobs. The CBO said it’s been successful at that, helping sustain between 700,000 and 3.6 million jobs at its peak

Slowly but surely President Obama is unwinding, rolling back, and even cancelling his own Obamacare. A couple of years ago he told Republicans not to mess with his plan. He said he’d veto any changes. But now, in substantial ways, he’s messing with his own plan. By various counts, the president has made 25 to 30 key changes to the Affordable Care Act. They all violate the legislation passed in 2010. Many believe Obama’s executive actions are unlawful or unconstitutional. Whatever the case, at this rate, there may not be much if any Obamacare in the next couple of years.

That´s stated -- it´s clear," Hagel said at the Beth El synagogue in Bethesda, Md. But Hagel was mistaken, and it´s not the first time he has misspoken about the United States´ nuclear

Meanwhile, data from the Energy Information Administration, a division of the U.S. Department of Energy, indicates that electricity production in the United States has declined since 2007, when it hit its all-time peak. The U.S. is producing less electricity than it did seven years ago for a population that has added more than 14 million people. “The electricity index rose 1.8 percent, its largest increase since March 2010,” said BLS in its

The story revealed details of the backlash against a Federal Communications Commission plan to investigate the news-gathering and information dissemination practices of a variety of print and broadcast media outlets. The Post quickly amended that headline, as someone decided the study should have sparked a general “outcry,” even though it apparently did not –- at least, not in The Post’s newsroom. Still, some bright fellow at The Post noted that this latest encroachment by the federal government should be met with at least a perfunctory protest
