A rump band of Beltway conservatives has seen the enemy and it is not Harry Reid. It is Mitch McConnell, whose scalp is apparently worth blowing yet another shot at a Republican Senate majority. There´s a new dividing line in the conservative movement—between a majority who´d like to win against President Obama, and a handful who´d like to win some scalps. It was on vivid display last week during the Senate debt-ceiling vote. Republicans were looking to avoid a fight they were destined to lose. Democrats had the votes to pass the bill with a simple majority, meaning they also would

Texas attorney general Greg Abbott has a famous saying: “What I really do for fun is I go into the office [and] sue the Obama administration.” Abbott’s relentless struggle against an administration that routinely exceeds its authority and tramples on federalism made him the ringleader among the two dozen Republican state AGs. He’s now running for governor. So it’s not surprising that Dan Branch, running to succeed Abbott as Texas AG, is often asked if he would be as tough as Abbott in confronting the Obama administration. “My response is I’ll have to be tougher,” he says. And he goes

Sister Rosemary Connelly was not pleased with the mayor of Chicago. The head of Misericordia, a beloved home to 600 people with Down syndrome and other disabilities, the eighty-three-year-old nun might not at first glance seem to be in a position to carry much influence over city politics. But this is Chicago, and Misericordia offers gold-plated care in a state notorious for its nightmarish residential institutions. The children and siblings of the powerful—politicians, TV anchors, lawyers, developers—are cared for there, and an A-list of Chicago’s leadership arrives on command, on bended knee and with an open checkbook. It was 2011, and the

The company behind “American Idol” sued Sony Music Entertainment in federal court on Thursday, saying that Sony had underpaid royalties for digital streams of music by Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry and other stars from the show’s early seasons. The suit, which asks for $10 million in damages, was filed by 19 Recordings and is the latest in a series of lawsuits over online royalties in recent years. In the most prominent of these cases, a group of producers behind Eminem sued the Universal Music Group in 2007, saying that Universal had incorrectly counted downloads through online stores like iTunes

(Video) FCC commissioner Ajit Pai told Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren Thursday night he is concerned about a study by the agency that would send researchers into America’s newsrooms because he believes that “the government has no place in the newsroom.” The FCC drew the ire of free-press advocates and lawmakers after proposing a "study of critical information needs," which one dissenting commissioner said would let researchers "grill reporters, editors and station owners about how they decide which stories to run." Pai said on “On the Record” that he is worried about the First Amendment implications of the study, saying

The Assad government may have used chemical weapons again as recently as last month, according to activists pressing the U.S. to investigate the attack. On Jan. 13 in the Syrian city of Daraya, five people were killed and more than 20 injured after being exposed to a mysterious gas. Syrian activists, including some witnesses on the ground, believe that the attack is evidence the Syrian government is still using chemical weapons against its own people—months after that regime pledged to destroy its nerve gas arsenal. A group of survivors of Syrian government atrocities, including chemical weapons attacks verified by U.N. inspectors, visited

The American Conservative Union, which runs the conference, announced on Wednesday that the group will attend as guests, ending several years when GOPround was not invited. GOProud members will be included in all events, but the group will not be given a sponsorship or a booth, under the arrangement. “It’s beyond disingenuous for GOProud leadership

No sooner did President Obama publicly warn that “there will be consequences if people step over the line” in Kiev than a hastily declared truce evaporated Thursday in a wave of bloodshed. So much for Obama’s threats. Fact is, the president showed just how credible his warnings are when he allowed Syria to cross his chemical-weapons “red line” with impunity. Other retreats and concessions by Washington — in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Russia and elsewhere — have only reinforced America’s image as weak and not to be feared. America is quickly losing its ability to shape world events. And in Ukraine, it’s beyond tragic.

With Christie pretty well neutralized, it’s time to turn to the GOP’s other successful blue-state governor and try to cripple him before 2016 too. Might as well have it on your radar now as you’ll be hearing about it sporadically, even though nothing will come of it. The scandal this time is the fact that, back when Walker was Milwaukee County Executive and running for governor, some of his county staff communicated with his campaign staff during county office hours, while on the taxpayer’s dime. It got to the point where a separate wireless router was installed in the county

Job No. 1? Ukraine. You can only imagine Russian President Vladimir Putin is none too pleased about the civil unrest there -- and the less than flattering spotlight it’s shining on Russia -- not to mention distracting attention from his signature sports event in Sochi. But oozing confidence as the Olympic Games draw to a close, you can bet that once the snow and ice-making equipment are switched off at the balmy Black Sea resort, Putin will turn his full attention to those pesky protesters next door. You see: Losing Kiev from Moscow’s orbit is simply a non-starter for the Kremlin & Co. Russia

The enduring ban on transgender individuals serving in the US military has earned America a low ranking in the first global league table of LGBT inclusion in the armed forces. The US is placed at number 40 in the table of 103 countries’ armed forces as measured by their inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender service members. That puts it behind the militaries of countries such as Chile, Georgia and even America’s bête noire, Cuba. The US armed forces in September 2011 repealed the controversial policy of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, which forced gay service members to hide their sexuality.

I repeat: I’m not a global warming believer. I’m not a global warming denier. I’ve long believed that it cannot be good for humanity to be spewing tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. I also believe that those scientists who pretend to know exactly what this will cause in 20, 30 or 50 years are white-coated propagandists. “The debate is settled,” asserted propagandist in chief Barack Obama in his latest State of the Union address. “Climate change is a fact.” Really? There is nothing more anti-scientific than the very idea that science is settled, static, impervious to challenge. Take

President Obama’s forthcoming budget request will seek tens of billions of dollars in fresh spending for domestic priorities while abandoning a compromise proposal to tame the national debt in part by trimming Social Security benefits. With the 2015 budget request, Obama will call for an end to the era of austerity that has dogged much of his presidency and to his efforts to find common ground with Republicans. Instead, the president will focus on pumping new cash into job training, early-childhood education and other programs aimed at bolstering the middle class, providing Democrats with a policy blueprint heading into the
