Quiet campaigning for House
GOP leadership underway
Washington Examiner, by David M. Drucker    Original Article

House Republicans have begun jockeying for leadership positions in the next Congress, anticipating the possibility that Speaker John Boehner could step down after the November elections. The Ohio Republican maintains that he has no plans to relinquish the gavel. Indeed, some Republicans close to Boehner now believe he is leaning toward running for a third term as speaker after previously predicting that 2014 would be his final year on the job. Boehner´s speakership has strengthened in the aftermath of October´s government shutdown, with his often-rebellious conference uniting behind him following three years of bucking his leadership at nearly every turn.

The cost of owning or renting a home in New Jersey are more challenging than in 48 other states, according to a report from the Center for Housing Policy. The study, Housing Landscape 2014, looked at the percentage of low- and moderate-income households that spent more than 50 percent of their income on housing. It found 30.8 percent of New Jersey households faced “a severe housing cost burden,” an increase of 1.4 percent from 2009. Only households in California found it more burdensome, with 32.3 percent of low- and moderate-income households spending more than half of their earnings on

The Environmental Protection Agency is co-sponsoring a "climate change video contest" that asks students, ages 11-14:" Why do you care about climate change?" And: "How are you reducing carbon pollution or preparing for the impacts of climate change?" Students are advised to "be cool" and "be creative" in explaining "how climate change affects you, your family, friends, and community, now or in the future" -- and what they are doing to "prepare for a changing climate." The Obama administration frequently uses video contests or "challenges" to advance its liberal viewpoint on a variety of issues, and this is no exception. The climate-change videos

I’m on vacation in Mexico this week, with limited Internet access, but here are a few immediate thoughts on Facebook’s acquisition of WhatsApp, a messaging start-up. I won’t pretend to be an expert on WhatsApp, or on what distinguishes its technology from that of other similar services. But, from a financial perspective, the obvious thing that stands out is the price that Facebook is paying: up to nineteen billion dollars. Even in Silicon Valley, that’s a great deal of money to pay for a company with virtually no revenues, but it doesn’t prove positively that Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg are

Oliver North said on a Wednesday national broadcast that if anyone was happy that President Obama won a second term, it’s former President Jimmy Carter — and maybe Russian President Vladimir Putin. “If you could have imagined that someone is happy that Obama is president, it has to be Jimmy Carter because he is no longer the worst president in our history,” Mr. North said, on Fox News’ Sean Hannity show, as reported by The Washington Free Beacon. Mr. North also called Mr. Obama “Jimmy Carter on steroids” and said that the president has failed the international community in terms of leadership.

RUSH: I want to start today with this story that the Regime is going to put monitors in American news organization newsrooms. I had a fascinating discussion with two or three people here asking what they thought of it, and without fail, without exception, everybody I asked about this said without the slightest hesitation or doubt that the media will rise up in righteous indignation and opposition and will not put up with this. The media, New York Times, NBC News, CBS, Washington Post, you name it, they will not tolerate it. They will draw a red line like Obama

Barack Obama has wrapped himself in egalitarianism all his political career and now that dissatisfaction with his goal of “transforming” America is growing, he’s pushing equality more relentlessly than ever. Last fall, he declared income equality to be the “defining challenge of our time.“ That’s laughable, but in January, his administration – specifically the Departments of Justice and Education – went even further with a “guidance” letter that demands a group equality approach to student discipline in America’s public schools. If federal bureaucrats suspect that there’s any racial disproportionality in the punishments meted out for misbehavior in school, they will

In case you missed it over the last few days: Ukraine has descended into total chaos and Venezuela is following close behind. In Ukraine, the turmoil has mostly taken place in Kiev. The protests were inspired by President Viktor Yanukovych’s set of anti-protest laws. The situation has only worsened as the government has used force to crack down on the large gatherings. The latest reports place the Kiev death toll at 38. According to VICE‘s UK editor, Henry Langston, local hotels are being used as morgues as the bloodshed worsens. When you’ve lost the NEA… I am sure it won’t come as a surprise to hear that in far too many states, implementation has been completely botched. Seven of ten teachers believe that implementation of the standards is going poorly in their schools. Worse yet, teachers report that there has been little to no attempt to allow educators to share what’s needed to get [Common Core State Standards] implementation right. In fact, two thirds of all teachers report that they have not even been asked how to implement these new standards in their classrooms. That’s from a letter that President Dennis

This is a pay raise of 39%, and it begins on January 1, 2015. Applause erupted throughout the East Room of the White House, as President Obama, flanked by a number of these workers, spoke about the great need to raise workers´ wages and how he was taking the lead in doing so. The president´s rationale justifying his actions could not be more wrong, and the smattering of applause speaks to the blatant ignorance many have in the

The Netflix series House of Cards has been both praised and criticized for its portrayal of DC politics. The show has become so popular, it’s near impossible to avoid the name Frank Underwood on Twitter. It´s another character, however - Sen. Curtis Haas - who is causing a bit of controversy, thanks to his noticeable likeness to Tea Party hero Senator Ted Cruz. A few key details make the Cruz comparison plausible: First, Haas is referred to as a “Tea Party Bullhorn.” This metaphorical label certainly applies to Cruz and recently was by a Time article, which stated that his

According to the latest report, Al-Jazeera America´s (AJA) ratings are exactly zero. Although available in 55 million homes, no one is watching. Worst of all, AJA has had absolutely no impact on the national conversation. Nothing the cable news network has so far done has penetrated anywhere -- which is all that matters to the media To try and remedy this, AJA is set to unfurl a number of left-wing documentaries: “Borderland,” is a four-part series that will show six Americans given the task of retracing the footsteps of three deceased migrants attempting to cross to the United States from Mexico.

Last week, Reporters Without Borders dropped America in the World Press Freedom Index 2014 from 33rd to 46th. James Risen of The New York Times rightly explained, “I think 2013 will go down in history as the worst year for press freedom in the United States’ modern history.” And he’s right. The violation of press freedoms has been egregious under this administration, even as the press fetes President Obama as an honest and effective commander-in-chief. Selective Access. President Obama has regularly granted special access to reporters who give him preferential coverage. CBS’ Steve Kroft admitted as much after a late-2012 interview

As a child growing up in Detroit and Boston, I had many opportunities to experience the ugly face of racism and witnessed the devastating toll exacted by its mean-spirited nature. I was a victim of the racism of low expectations for black children, but in retrospect, I can see that many of those attitudes were based on ignorance. Large numbers of white people actually believed that blacks were intellectually inferior, and there was a host of other inaccurate beliefs that whites held about blacks and that blacks held about whites. Many of those misperceptions probably would have persisted if measures

Retired Justice John Paul Stevens was one of the great mischief-makers in the history of the U.S. Supreme Court. At age 93, he has now written a book in which he recommends six amendments to the Constitution. Presumably these are the changes he wasn’t able to implement the easy way, via a 5-4 vote on the court. One of Stevens’ proposed changes relates to the Second Amendment, and is intended to reverse Stevens’ loss in the Heller and McDonald cases: Stevens is not going to win any friends at the National Rifle Association, because his undisguised agenda is to make
