TOLUCA, Mexico — President Barack Obama says "there will be consequences" for violence in Ukraine if people step over the line. He says that includes making sure that the military doesn´t step into a situation that civilians should resolve. Obama says the U.S. condemns the violence in the strongest terms. He says the U.S. holds Ukraine´s government primarily responsible to ensure it´s dealing with peaceful protesters appropriately.

Meet the latest face of bootleg Pakistani Viagra: President Obama. “Apparently a symbol of power and virility, Barack Obama is the unwitting face of contraband Viagra sold in this market in Peshawar,” according to a report from Agence France-Presse. The president is featured on a number of different forms of the drug. Even though Pakistan has banned the erectile-dysfunction medication, the agency reports some forms are smuggled into the country from neighboring Afghanistan. Of Course the Dumbest, Weirdest Feud

By far the weirdest feud in American media and politics right now is the alliance of Donald Trump, Breitbart.com, and, now, Sarah Palin against BuzzFeed and the reporter behind a piece suggesting that maybe Donald Trump´s political aspirations were insincere. The whole thing is funny mostly because it necessitates the question: Why on Earth is anyone defending Donald Trump? This whole kerfuffle began a week ago, sparked by BuzzFeed reporter McKay Coppins´ hysterically comprehensive review of Trump´s weirdo pseudo-campaign. Appearances in New Hampshire, flights to Florida, a fervent insistence that Trump was considered important and legitimate as a candidate. It´s

LOWELL, Mass. — Police in Lowell say a man who demanded money for shoveling the driveway of an elderly couple who hadn’t asked him to do so was chased away when the 79-year-old woman answered her door holding a gun. Police say the man knocked on the door of the woman and her 81-year-old husband at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and forcefully asked for payment for shoveling. They told him to leave, so he banged on the door harder. Police tell The Sun that the woman came to the door again, this time holding a gun at her side.

I had breakfast at Republique on La Brea Avenue on Tuesday, and here´s how the tab broke down: Cafe Americano — $3.25 ~Quiche — $5~Tax — 0.77~ Surcharge Healthy LA — 0.25 ~The last item is the one creating a little controversy at the new high-end restaurant in the old Campanile space. The owners are adding a 3% fee to every bill, which they say will pay for healthcare insurance for all their employees, from hostesses and bartenders to dishwashers and potato peelers.

The next presidential election will be more grounded in data, analytics and mirco-targeting of voters than ever before, President Obama’s former campaign manager said on Wednesday. Jim Messina said that the president’s 2012 reelection campaign only scratched the surface of what will soon be possible to get campaigns’ messages out to voters. “I think the evolution of campaigns on both sides will be an even further personalized campaign using data and marrying technology in a much deeper way than we did,” he said at the Beyond the Dot conference, an event on new domain names. “I think more and more

The abject naiveté with which President Barack Obama’s administration approached America’s relationship with Russia after coming to power was timidly underscored by its campaign-like slogan: “Reset.” In theory, this “reset” was to be an abandonment of the confrontational, “cowboy” diplomacy of the Bush years, but in practice it amounted to excess deference to Moscow and the creation of space designed to allow the Kremlin to pursue what it regards as its national interests. The abandonment of American interests in an effort to provide Moscow with reparations for the perceived offenses of the previous eight years has evolved from puerile and

There’s both good news and bad news for Hillary Clinton coming out of the new Siena College and C-SPAN study on first ladies. The good news: Clinton tops the list when it comes to which first lady scholars see taking the Oval Office gig as well. Experts also suggested, but much less so than Clinton, that Eleanor Roosevelt and Michelle Obama would be good presidents, too. Speaking of Obama, with her inclusion on the list, Clinton got knocked down two spots. Clinton is now sixth on the first ladies ranking, whereas Obama entered the study in fifth place.

A skater´s music selection defines the mood: The right tune sparks unison clapping from the crowd and gives an artistic flair to the technical elements. But can certain types of music enable a higher score? Ahead of the ladies´ short program on Wednesday, the Commissariat of Calculation sorted all 159 programs that have been performed so far in Sochi into six musical categories. Listening to Palestinian officials bemoan the condition of the peace process can be disorienting, given that that they are the ones who have played no small part in sabotaging that very same process. Ahead of Secretary of State Kerry’s meeting with Palestinian Authority head Mahmoud Abbas, an unnamed PA official has been warning that the peace talks are in “real crisis.” The two are due to meet in Paris today, but to suggest that the negotiations are in crisis now would be to falsely imply that they were in a happier state at some previous point. Washington- Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Ted Cruz of Texas are both favorites of the tea party wing of the Republican Party. If both run for president in 2016, as seems likely at the moment, they’d vie for the same conservative voters as a base upon which to build a winning GOP primary coalition. Given that potential White House candidates are jockeying right now for support from key donors and party figures, it’s not too early to ask this question: Which of these two men is currently winning the most tea party support? Despite their similar electoral roots, they

With allies like Ted Cruz, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn doesn’t need enemies. Thanks to Sen. Cruz’s latest procedural stunt, Cornyn, a reliably conservative Republican from Texas with a record of responsible governance, now finds himself under siege from bomb-throwing elements of the extreme right over last week’s Senate vote to extend the government’s borrowing authority. Republican leaders in the Senate sought an up-or-down vote that would put all Democrats firmly on record as supporting the debt-limit extension. But Cruz upset all that, demanding the debt-limit bill first clear a nit-picky procedural hurdle requiring 60 votes. With only 55 votes, Democrats were

In short: Trump let his guard down in the hope that the new "cool kids" would like him. And the cool kids abused his trust, because that´s why they´re cool. This fairytale stuff is peddled because nobody wants to open the real can of worms: regional rivalries, the spread of al-Qaeda in Africa, the collapse of African states or the sordid competition by great powers for diamonds,

Raising the minimum wage to $10.10 by 2016 will help "people who just want to work hard," but it also will help those who want to "work less," White House economic adviser Gene Sperling told MSNBC´s "Morning Joe" on Wednesday. He argued that Americans support raising the minimum wage because it will lift "struggling" families out of poverty: "But they also know what it´s like to see a friend, a neighbor, where one spouse goes back to work, who would prefer maybe not to work. Maybe they´re working part-time just to supplement the family´s income. And they think, if that

WASHINGTON, D.C., February 17, 2014 – President Barack Obama has elevated the right to have sex with a member of the same sex to the level of universal “fundamental freedoms” in a new presidential statement criticizing Uganda. But critics say his promotion of homosexuality in a continent that overwhelmingly opposes that behavior amounts to a form of liberal “cultural imperialism.” Obama wrote on Sunday that he opposed a proposed bill in Uganda that would criminalize same-sex “marriages” and impose life imprisonment for repeated homosexual acts, among other provisions, because “as a country and a people, the United States has consistently

RALEIGH, N.C. — A Wake County jury found Tuesday that Republican U.S. Senate candidate Dr. Greg Brannon misled investors in a technology start-up. As a result of the civil judgment, Brannon will be personally liable for repaying $250,000. If the judgment is upheld on appeal, he will also have to pay 8 percent interest from the time each of the aggrieved investors wrote their checks and could be required to pay their attorneys´ fees in the case. Jurors determined that Brannon´s co-defendant Robert Rice didn´t mislead investors and isn´t responsible for repaying them. "I completely disagree with this verdict and feel that I
