Politics to Shadow Obama’s
Trade Talks in Mexico
New York Times, by Peter Baker & Elisabeth Malkin    Original Article

WASHINGTON — President Obama travels to Mexico on Wednesday for a brief but politically fraught visit aimed at forging closer trade ties with America’s two closest neighbors even as his party’s leaders back home have vowed to undercut his efforts. Mr. Obama will meet with the leaders of Mexico and Canada in the rapidly growing city of Toluca, to the west of Mexico City, the capital, at what his advisers consider a critical juncture in his efforts to negotiate a broad Asian-Pacific trade pact that would encompass roughly 40 percent of the global economy across a dozen nations. JUBA, South Sudan — Fighting between South Sudan´s army and rebels in the capital of one of its oil-rich states is forcing U.N. personnel to remain inside a base where more than 20,000 frightened residents are seeking refuge, officials said Wednesday. U.N. personnel are unable to leave the base in Malakal because of the fighting, said Joe Contreras, a spokesman for the U.N. mission in South Sudan. Ten people died at the hospital at the U.N. base on Tuesday. People inside the camp are reporting a water shortage, said a spokeswoman from the aid group Oxfam. Rebels control some parts of town

Fourth Georgia hospital closes

The fourth Georgia hospital in two years is closing its doors due to severe financial difficulties caused by Obamacare’s payment cuts for emergency services. The Lower Oconee Community Hospital is, for now, a critical access hospital in southeastern Georgia that holds 25 beds. The hospital is suffering from serious cash-flow problems, largely due to the area’s 23 percent uninsured population, and hopes to reopen as “some kind of urgent care center,” CEO Karen O’Neal said. Many hospitals in the 25 states that rejected the Medicaid expansion are facing similar financial problems. Liberal administration ally Think Progress has already faulted Georgia for not

SAN ANTONIO, Texas—In an apparent violation of state law, Battleground Texas officials are exploiting legally protected information to turn voters out to the polls as part of the Democratic party´s quest to paint the Lone Star State blue, a new undercover video from James O´Keefe reveals. The footage shows Battleground Texas volunteer Jennifer Longoria saying the group uses the phone numbers from voter registration forms in later efforts to boost turnout on election day. Texas Election Code prohibits the use of, or even the copying of, phone numbers provided by individuals registering to vote. “Every time we register somebody to

Climate Parasites: The Answer

It is a basic principle of psychological warfare that the side that controls the language of the argument controls the argument. Barack Obama´s own website is using this PsyWar technique by calling opponents of his cap and trade agenda "climate change deniers." (snip) The name "climate parasites" performs two jobs with exactly two words. It derails completely the enemy´s position that our side consists of people who are totally ignorant of climate science, or choose to ignore it. We acknowledge without hesitation that climate change is a proven fact of nature. The name also, however, marginalizes the other side by

If there is one thread that weaves throughout the conservative landscape it is this: if Barack Hussein Obama were a Republican, impeachment proceedings would have been seriously considered long ago, and the general mass media would have been providing the grist for it. Here’s the argument that seems the most common illustration: If George W. Bush had decided to issue congress-be-damned executive orders or agency authorization decisions concerning such major areas as immigration, health care, guns, minimum wage, wind farms, global warming, presidential records, natural gas, government travel expenses, establishing bureaucracies, Libya, abortion, pursue accession to the U.N. On January 21, 2013, President Barack Obama outlined his vision for his second term and legacy, saying, “We will show the courage to try and resolve our differences with other nations peacefully — not because we are naïve about the dangers we face, but because engagement can more durably lift suspicion and fear.” His desire to engage was both genuine and in alignment with long-held conventional wisdom among senior statesmen. A half century worth of experience, however, does not support the thesis that diplomacy with rogue regimes or terrorist groups brings peace. [Snip]

Alexandria, Virginia - Ruthanne Lodato´s killer announced himself with a knock at the door. He waited on the porch, standing beside the American flag that hangs outside the house, and when the 59-year-old music teacher answered he shot her to death in her own hallway. The man then turned the gun on her elderly mother´s caretaker, wounding her before walking down the garden path and back onto the street. Mrs Lodato´s murder, committed seemingly at random and in broad daylight at 11.30am, would on its own be enough to unsettle the city of Alexandria, a wealthy suburb of Washington DC.

BERLIN - Volkswagen´s top labor representative threatened on Wednesday to try to block further investments by the German carmaker in the southern United States if its workers there are not unionized. Workers at VW´s factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee, last Friday voted against representation by the United Auto Workers union (UAW), rejecting efforts by VW representatives to set up a German-style works council at the plant. German workers enjoy considerable influence over company decisions under the legally enshrined "co-determination" principle which is anathema to many politicians in the U.S. who see organized labor as a threat to profits and job growth. You have been subsidizing the efforts of radical left-wing community organizers for years, and you probably didn´t even know it. Administrators at a hotel run by Iowa State University have given the boot to Bibles in their guest rooms after protest from a religious separatist group. The push to remove the books began when a guest at the Hotel Memorial Union complained to Freedom From Religion Foundation about the "unwelcome religious propaganda in the bedside table," according to a local NBC News affiliate. The foundation, a nonprofit which advocates the separation of church and state, said the hotel is part of the Iowa public university system and, as such, cannot legally place the Bibles in the room.

Economy: Food and energy prices are rising, wages are flat and the top concern among Americans is unemployment. What was that word coined in the ´70s to describe a stagnant economy suffering inflationary pressures? Since the Obama "recovery" started 4-1/2 years ago, inflation appears to have been relatively tame, with core prices climbing just 7% from June 2009 to December 2013. But as CBS News discovered when it looked a little closer, the overall number is deceptive. In fact, it found food prices soaring. The official inflation data confirm this. Overall, food prices are up 9% since June 2009, according to the Bureau

Watching Season 2 of “House of Cards.” Not to be a scold or humorless, but do Washington politicians understand how they make themselves look when they embrace the show and become part of its promotion by spouting its famous lines? Congressmen only work three days a week. Each shot must have taken two hours or so—the setup, the crew, the rehearsal, the learning the line. How do they have time for that? Why do they think it’s good for them? “House of Cards” very famously does nothing to enhance Washington’s reputation. It reinforces the idea that the capital has no room

In economic circles, the difference between zero lost jobs and 1 million lost jobs -- in an economy with 137 million of them -- might amount to a polite difference of opinion among academics. But when a whiff of lower employment Tuesday attached a foul odor to a possible hike in the federal minimum wage, a new political skirmish in Washington was born. President Obama’s drive to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour is central to his goal this year of narrowing income inequality -- and giving Democrats a fresh refrain in the midterm election campaign.

The wrong way to fix Obamacare

The sprawling 2010 Affordable Care Act has proved so hard to implement that the Obama administration has delayed or waived multiple provisions of the law in the hope of avoiding even more breakdowns and confusion. Last week the administration put off for another year the requirement that larger employers provide coverage for some or all of their workers. It´s also reportedly considering a longer delay in implementing the law´s minimum standards for insurance policies. Although the administration may have the right motives, its aggressive use of executive power to change deadlines and weaken requirements sets an unwelcome precedent.

As Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton "chose things that were possible for her," rather than pick fights with her political rival Barack Obama, NBC Correspondent Andrea Mitchell told MSNBC´s Rachel Maddow Tuesday night. "But she didn´t have that much leverage, as high profile as she was," said Mitchell, who -- as NBC´s chief foreign correspondent -- covered Clinton on many of her travels. Maddow asked Mitchell if things have changed much at the State Department now that John Kerry has replaced Hillary Clinton. Under Kerry, "They are much less risk-averse," Mitchell responded. She said Kerry has "pushed back more" and "been more aggressive"

The recent vote by workers in Tennessee not to set up labor councils at Volkswagen operations is another stunning defeat for unions. The power of these unions, once among the most feared in American politics, has imploded in the last three years. Republicans in state government, who are much more principled conservatives than Washington Republicans, have been courageous and wise. Scott Walker and his modest plans to bring public employee unions back into the realm of fiscal sanity were attacked in a prolonged and vicious campaign rarely seen in politics today. Wisconsin has historically been a state in which unions held

Wealthy condo developers and the owners of expensive beach houses are petitioning the Federal Emergency Management Agency to cut them a break on flood insurance costs. Meaning that the long-unbalanced insurance system is only getting more uneven, and taxpayers´ subsidies to those property owners are getting more unfair. Here´s how flood insurance works, in the ideal. FEMA develops maps of areas near the coast or inland bodies of water and rivers. Those maps try and anticipate the likelihood of flooding, and if you build in zones that are likely to flood, you pay mandatory insurance premiums linked to the likelihood of
