What else can they say, really? The Democrats have built their entire midterm strategy on an economic populism focused around the minimum wage as a way to both cudgel Republicans and distract from ObamaCare’s woes — it’s much too late to turn back now, not even for a super official, nonpartisan report confirming many of the plan’s negative effects on the job market and those in poverty to which Republicans have been pointing. This one’s getting the White House’s full sugarcoat/whitewash treatment, via the WFB: A top White House economist says that President Obama’s minimum wage increase will have “zero

Owners of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac

A recently revealed memo from the Treasury Department indicates that owners of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac common stock will not be able to access any future earnings from the mortgage giants, a previously undisclosed arrangement that experts say might violate securities laws and amount to a de facto nationalization of the companies. (Snip) Some investors flocked to the companies’ troubled shares in hopes that a housing recovery would be imminent. That is exactly what happened—Fannie and Freddie began earning billions in mid-2012 and have repaid $185 billion to the Treasury. However, a 2010 Treasury memo addressed to then-Secretary Timothy

Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., a 36-year Republican senator facing a primary challenge in 2014, denied that he is out of touch with voters but acknowledged that he "doesn´t know a lot about" the Tea Party. "The Tea Party is something I don´t really know a lot about," Cochran, who was elected senator in 1978 after six years in the House, told Mississippi News Now. Cochran denied Tea Party rival Chris McDaniel´s accusation that he´s out of touch with conservatives. "I´m as in touch with the people of Mississippi as an elected official can be," he said. (Kyiv, Ukraine) Open warfare broke out on the streets of Kyiv today, with at least 22 persons reportedly killed and more than 1,000 people injured. It was a day of non-stop bloodletting, smoke, fire and screeching ambulances. The death toll was likely to rise as police went on the offensive after sundown, advancing on thousands of protesters on Independence Square at 8 p.m. with gunshots, a water cannon and an armored personnel carrier. Tents housing protesters were burning on the main square, a fire fueled by protesters with tires as a defense against police attacks.

Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday called Ukrainian President Victor Yanukovych to express “grave concern” over violence in the streets of Kiev, as clashes between police and opposition protesters escalated. “He called on President Yanukovych to pull back government forces and to exercise maximum restraint,” said the White House in a statement. “The vice president made clear that the United States condemns violence by any side, but that the government bears special responsibility to de-escalate the situation.” Reports said at least 13 people had died on Tuesday after police charged protesters who have gathered in Kiev´s Independence Square for the last two

A new report from a top health care industry trade organization contradicts Kathleen Sebelius’ recent claim that no job loss will occur under Obamacare. Obamacare’s medical device tax has already created a job loss of 33,000 in the medical device industry and 132,0o0 more job losses are expected, according to a new report from the industry trade group the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed), obtained by the Daily Caller. “There is absolutely no evidence, and every economist will tell you this, that there is any job loss related to the Affordable Care Act,” Sebelius said Monday in Orlando. “Part-time physicians

A couple of weeks after joking that Americans would be better off pursuing a skilled trade than an art history degree, President Obama has apologized to one professor who took offense--with a handwritten note. Speaking at a General Electric gas engine plant on Jan. 30 in Wisconsin, Obama suggested that training to work in the manufacturing industry might be more profitable than specializing in art history. “Manufacturing jobs typically pay well,” he said. “We want to encourage more of them."

Sen. Ron Wyden, (D-OR) is intending to draft a law that would entitle every child born in the United States to a $500 savings account of their own. Wyden stated that if there were universal savings accounts for newborns, it would “really put a dent in the poverty rate.” Wyden will soon head the Senate Finance Committee, as the six Senators who were in line before him seemed to magically drift away. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) lost her reelection, Kent Conrad (D-ND), Jeff Bingaman (DNM) and Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) retired, John Kerry was named secretary of State, and Chairman Max Baucus was

When he first ran for the presidency, Barack Obama promised to slow the rise of the oceans and heal the planet. On Tuesday, he claimed to have delivered on that promise, telling an audience in Maryland that his administration had prevented some of the severe weather impacts of climate change by restricting carbon dioxide emissions. Before he took office, he said, "[c]arbon pollution was going unchecked, which was having severe impacts on our weather." He then announced he would pursue new fuel economy standards for trucks. It is an odd claim, firstly because there is often no scientific link between severe

Letting terrorists off the hook is dangerous, but inviting a terrorist to dine at the Pentagon is downright dangerous and bizarre. But that’s exactly what happened when Anwar al-Aulaqi, the American-born terrorist ultimately assassinated by President Obama, was asked to speak at a Pentagon luncheon. The more we learn about what the government knew about al-Aulaqi, the more curious we become as to why this man was courted by those entrusted with our national security. The same can be said for Omar al-Bayoumi, a Saudi national with known ties to terrorism who was arrested by British authorities working with the FBI days

At least one Satanist leader is a nonbeliever when it comes to a Pennsylvania woman´s claims that she joined a satanic cult, then killed dozens of people over a six-year period. Denmark’s government has brought in a ban on the religious slaughter of animals for the production of halal and kosher meat, after years of campaigning from welfare activists. The change to the law, announced last week and effective as of yesterday, has been called “anti-Semitism” by Jewish leaders and “a clear interference in religious freedom” by the non-profit group Danish Halal. European regulations require animals to be stunned before they are slaughtered, but grants exemptions on religious grounds. For meat to be considered kosher under Jewish law or halal under Islamic law, the animal must be conscious when killed.

The White House may have to scrap its plans to aggressively promote a 40 percent national minimum wage hike now that the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office found that the move would likely cost the U.S. 500,000 jobs by the second half of 2016. The CBO´s report, released Tuesday afternoon, also estimated that it would pull 900,000 low-income Americans above the federal government´s poverty line. The White House didn´t answer questions about whether that trade-off is acceptable to President Obama, but Senate Democrats have pushed hard for legislation that would implement his goal of driving the minimum wage far above its current

Obama’s Foreign Policy: Enemy Action

It’s often hard to determine whether a series of bad policies results from stupidity or malicious intent. Occam’s razor suggests that the former is the more likely explanation, as conspiracies assume a high degree of intelligence, complex organization, and secrecy among a large number of people, qualities that usually are much less frequent than the simple stupidity, disorganization, and inability to keep a secret more typical of our species. Yet surveying the nearly 6 years of Obama’s disastrous foreign policy blunders, I’m starting to lean towards Goldfinger’s Chicago mob-wisdom: “Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times, it’s enemy action.”

Conventional wisdom for 2016 goes like this: Republicans are heading toward a bruising primary while, if she runs, Hillary Rodham Clinton is the de facto Democratic nominee. And, that CW goes, that is a very good thing for the Democratic Party. Not necessarily. The positives for Democrats of nominating Clinton basically by acclamation are obvious. She is well known, well liked and a proven commodity on the campaign trail. Polling suggests she has a massive primary lead and a double-digit lead in the general election as well. And she is a Clinton. The negatives are less obvious but have both

Oxford, Miss. — The FBI on Tuesday was helping investigate who tied a noose around the neck of a University of Mississippi statue of James Meredith, who, in 1962, became the first black student to enroll in the then all-white Southern college. Two men were seen near the statue early Sunday and investigators were looking at surveillance footage. “It’s a racial hate crime,” Mississippi NAACP president Derrick Johnson said

Revenge is a powerful engine, and nothing drives human behavior like it. Love, like candy, is dandy, but revenge, like liquor, is quicker, and the effect is longer lasting. Hillary Clinton seems determined to learn this bitter lesson. The “bimbo eruptions” that Bill and Hillary thought were well behind them are coming back with a vengeance, and it’s only 2014. Bimbos have been a menace to ambitious men since Eve treated Adam to his first apple tart, Delilah gave Samson his first haircut, and Anthony Weiner tweeted his first crotch shot to the bimbos of the cyberworld. CROSSVILLE — “Lies, damned lies and statistics” is a quote often attributed to Mark Twain. It should be a required quotation printed at the top of each government report and on the TV screen during an Obama speech. I once sat on a committee whose function, for want of a better description, would be that of quality control. It was our job to review records for compliance with legally mandated report formats. I quickly learned that the small group that physically reviewed the records had an interesting way of reporting results. The meeting would go something like this: “The number

The latest comments from Jammeh, who last year branded gays a threat to humanity, coincide with a renewed crackdown on same-sex relationships in Africa, where homosexuality is taboo and illegal in 37 countries. In recent months, Nigeria has outlawed same-sex relationships and Uganda has voted for life imprisonment for some homosexual acts. "We will fight these vermins called homosexuals or gays the same way we are fighting malaria-causing mosquitoes, if not more aggressively," Jammeh
