It´s about time. That somebody called out the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, that is. As the Washington Examiner´s Richard Pollock reported Friday, the Federal Reserve´s inspector general has opened an investigation into why what started out as a $55 million renovation of the new bureau´s central headquarters has ballooned to $145 million in less than two years. The investigation was requested by Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., chairman of the oversight and investigations subcommittee of the House Financial Services Committee, following a heated Jan. 28 hearing in which CFPB Director Richard Cordray refused to provide details about the project requested by

Over seven in 10 Obama voters, and 55 percent of Democrats, regret voting for President Obama´s reelection in 2012, according to a new Economist/YouGov.com poll. Conducted to test the media hype about a comeback by 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, the new poll found voters still uninspired by Romney, but also deeply dissatisfied with Obama who has so far failed to capitalize on his victory over 15 months ago. The poll asked those who voted for Obama´s reelection a simple question: “Do you regret voting for Barack Obama?” — Overall, 71 percent said yes, 26 percent no. — 80

DHS Building National License

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is seeking to build a national license plate reader database, according to a recent job posting for government contractors. The posting, first reported by Ars Technica, seeks a contractor to build a national license plate recognition database for DHS and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Automated license plate recognition (ALPR) technology uses cameras to identify cars, alert police departments if they match a license plate on a “hot list,” and track their movements. “In support of its public safety focus, ICE, consistent with other law enforcement agency practice, is exploring the ability to obtain access to

The closing arguments in Dobyns v.USA are set to take place this morning at the U.S. Federal Courthouse in Tucson, Arizona. Former ATF Special Agent Jay Dobyns has been suing the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms for more than a year after the agency failed to properly provide protection for himself and his family. His battle with the government has spanned over the course of a decade. "I am assuring to everyone who attends that you will be shocked and stunned. Maybe infuriated and sickened," Dobyns said on his website. "The closing arguments will be the culmination of ten

President Obama will unveil the next phase of fuel economy and greenhouse gas standards for heavy-duty vehicles on Tuesday. During his visit to a Safeway distribution center in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Obama will announce the new standards, which build upon the first standards the administration finalized for big rigs, semi trucks, buses and other heavy-duty vehicles in 2011. The new standards continue Obama´s promised "year of action," a White House official said on Monday. In the last five days, including the new fuel economy standards, the administration has set a stricter tone on the president´s climate policies. On Friday, Obama

Former Rep. Mel Reynolds (D-Ill.) has been arrested in Zimbabwe by immigration officers, according to multiple reports. News outlet AllAfrica reports Reynolds was arrested on Monday on charges of violating immigration laws by carrying expired travel documents and possessing pornographic material. "He has been picked up. Investigations are still underway and revealing information will jeopardize investigations that are underway," Assistant Regional Immigration Officer Francis Mabika told AllAfrica. Reynolds resigned from Congress in 1995 after being charged with 12 counts of statutory rape, solicitation of child porn and obstruction of justice. The former congressman arrived to Zimbabwe in November, and was given a two-week visa,

“You Wouldn’t Believe What I Saw in the Dachau Gift Shop,” is the memorable headline atop a new article by Jeffrey Goldberg of Bloomberg.com. Immediately below said memorable headline is is an even more memorable photo that Goldberg took at — and here’s a phrase you rarely hear all that often — the Dachau Gift Shop — the gift shop at the Dachau concentration camp, which he had recently visited: (Snip) I visited Dachau one afternoon during the Munich Security Conference with a friend, Fred Hiatt of the Washington Post. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius says there is “absolutely no evidence” that the Affordable Care Act will drive down employment, despite a report from the Congressional Budget Office released Feb. 4 predicting fewer people would be working. “There is absolutely no evidence, and every economist will tell you this, that there is any job-loss related to the Affordable Care Act,” Sebelius told reporters in Orlando, Fla., on Monday. “Part-time physicians are actually down since 2010, not up. The number of full-time workers continues to increase. I know that’s a popular myth that continues to be repeated but it

Some people think Monday´s national holiday had something to do with commemorating the birthdays of two of the country´s greatest presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Silly people. Monday was actually the fifth birthday of the stimulus spending bill signed by one of the country´s least great presidents, Barack Hussein Obama. That was back in 2009 when a billion dollars seemed like a lot of money. [Snip] The spending measure, Obama promised, was destined to create millions of new jobs and end one of the most frightening economic recessions in modern history.

The White House says that it will not interfere with Iran’s rising oil sales, despite a recent uptick that experts say is providing Tehran with billions in revenue. Exports of Iranian crude oil jumped to 1.32 million barrels in January, up from December’s high of 1.06 million barrels, according to data from the International Energy Agency. While the increase caused concern among some experts who worry that economic sanctions on Iran are collapsing, the White House appeared unfazed by the latest export data and promised to continue pausing its efforts to reduce these sales.

South Carolina Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy promised his party is “going to respond” to President Obama’s pledge to use executive orders to work around congressional opposition, saying they would use the “power of the purse” to cut funding for the White House’s pet projects. Gowdy spoke with Fox News’ Jeanine Pirro about the president’s use of executive orders to change and delay parts of Obamacare and otherwise change legislation without congressional input. The congressman expressed an unwillingness to wait around for judges to rule in Congress’ favor. “We have appropriations bills that are going to be coming through the House this spring,”

The funniest, most satisfying read of the day has to be Zombie´s delightful takedown of an attempt by feminists to hijack Valentine´s Day and turn it into a celebration of victimology. On February 14, Vagina Monologues author Eve Ensler had earlier decreed something called V-Day, a "rape-themed anti-holiday," but once the novelty wore off, came up with the new, improved 1 Billion Rising day. As Zombie put it in her article .00001 Billion Rising: Another Failed Mass Movement: The thesis behind 1 Billion Rising is that if the world´s one billion rape victims all rose up en masse and danced every

With talk about the 2016 election heating up, most of the national media has turned the focus on former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vice President Joseph Biden. Clinton and Biden would be formidable candidates. Either would be a logical successor to President Barack Obama as the leader of the Democratic Party. Yet if they are to be successful, they will need to look outside the beltway to learn about the kinds of issues that are animating voters outside of Washington. They would do well to draw on some of the ideas that have been percolating in recent months from newer

Behind President Barack Obama’s gripe to Bill O’Reilly that Fox News is always unfair to him stood a deeper resentment that has poisoned the soul of progressives for some time: Hollywood and academia might still be firmly in the grip of the orthodox left, but part of the media has managed to wriggle free. Liberals still can’t get over this fact, and their rearguard actions to regain control come in different forms: some, like our President’s objections, are innocuously transparent and amusing; others, like a recent research report on the future of media by the Brookings Institution, are more circuitous

“Life’s greatest happiness,” Victor Hugo wrote, “is to be convinced we are loved.” But as most experienced couples know, love-induced happiness is a year-round triumph, not the outcome of a singular, mass-marketed Valentine´s celebration - the one Jay Leno calls “Extortion Day.” But men ignore this expectation-filled Hallmark holiday at their peril, which is why it’s become a $16 billion industry. More than heart-shaped bling, women savor attention — a lesson also noted by politicians. Just as women should be wary of transient Romeos, they must think again about politicians who whisper sweet nothings into their ears, over-promising before an election

The former governor of Florida, Jeb Bush, will be speaking and getting an award in New York City this spring at the Manhattan Institute’s annual Alexander Hamilton dinner. The save-the-date notice that went out last week about the dinner, which is to take place in May, will only add to speculation about whether Mr. Bush intends to run for president in 2016. If he does, accepting the Manhattan Institute invitation is a smart move — it will provide Mr. Bush some valuable exposure before a large audience of right-of-center donors and intellectuals. A Bush candidacy, at least on paper, has a certain

The displaced, as many as 500,000 to date, the United Nations says, have flooded the countryside, swelling populations in war-battered communities that are already short on space and food and pushing a new wave of refugees into Turkey, where in interviews many have described a harrowing journey that left them in

Dear Leader Barack Hussein Obama, during a visit to Monticello on Monday, February 10, said, "That´s the good thing as a President, I can do whatever I want." That statement, made to French President Francois Hollande and Monticello Foundation president Leslie Bowman, was presumably a joke. Key word: presumably. With Obama, you never can tell. Obama´s own recent statements suggest that what he said at Monticello is what he truly feels. Speaking to House Democrats on Saturday, February 15, 2014, Obama said: I want to work with Congress to make that happen. But, I´m not going to wait, because there´s too much to

Observers say Venezuela’s security situation is spiraling “absolutely out of control” as socialist President Nicolas Maduro continues to crack down on pro-democracy protesters who have taken to the streets to demand that he resign. Protests in Venezuela entered their sixth day on Monday with students and other demonstrators braving violent attacks from state police and pro-Maduro militias, according to former and current U.S. officials. Maduro has even employed Iranian-style paramilitary Basij militias in a bid to quell the violence, according to Roger Noriega, a former United States ambassador and assistant secretary of state for western hemisphere affairs. “They’ve used it to control the

The Afghanistan government´s recent release of dozens of imprisoned terrorists, many of whom had killed Americans, was a galling betrayal of those Americans who died defending Afghanistan against the Taliban terrorists -- as well as those Americans who have returned home with arms or legs missing, or with minds traumatized beyond repair. If we learn nothing else from the bitter tragedy of the war in Afghanistan, it should be that we should put an end forever to the self-indulgence of thinking that we can engage in "nation-building" and creating "democracy" in countries where nothing resembling democracy has ever existed.

Soros Fund Management has doubled up a bet that the S&P 500 SPX is headed for a fall. Within Friday’s 13F filings news was the revelation that the firm, founded by legendary investor George Soros, increased a put position on the S&P 500 ETF SPY +0.10% by a whopping 154% in the fourth quarter, compared with the third. (A put or short position basically gives the owner the right to sell a security at a set price for a limited time, and in making such a bet, an investor generally believes the security is going to decline.)

There’s a fair amount of snark online Monday about Jamie Coots, the Pentecostal pastor and reality-TV star who was fatally bitten by a snake he was handling in over-literal adherence to Luke 10:19. ("Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”) An atheist website offered this tasteless observation: “Pentecostal preachers are among the most poisonous creatures on Earth, but every once in while they bump into things even more venomous.” But even fellow Christians are finding fault with Coot for misinterpreting Scripture
