Capital One says it can show up

Ding-dong, Cap One calling. Credit card issuer Capital One isn´t shy about getting into customers´ faces. The company recently sent a contract update to cardholders that makes clear it can drop by any time it pleases. The update specifies that "we may contact you in any manner we choose" and that such contacts can include calls, emails, texts, faxes or a "personal visit." As if that weren´t creepy enough, Cap One says these visits can be "at your home and at your place of employment." The police need a court order to pull off something like that. But Cap One says it has the right to get up close and personal anytime, anywhere.

U.N. report catalogs North
Korean ´crimes against humanity´

Beijing - Torture, deliberate starvation and other abuses carried out by North Korean authorities — possibly on the orders of leader Kim Jong Un — are crimes against humanity and should be referred to an international court or tribunal for prosecution, United Nations investigators said Monday. A 400-page report catalogs practices long cited by defectors and human rights activists, but their inclusion in a comprehensive document compiled by a U.N.-appointed panel appears to be unprecedented. It was accompanied by a three-page letter to Kim warning that under international law he could be held responsible for atrocities committed by underlings.

A headteacher who expelled a six-year-old boy after he brought in Mini Cheddars for his packed lunch fed pupils food from McDonald’s, it was revealed today. Jeremy Meek ordered the notorious junk food for youngsters at Colnbrook Church of England Primary School in Berkshire, just weeks before kicking out a pupil in a row over healthy eating. Pupil Riley Pearson was expelled earlier this month following the fall-out over his lunchbox. (Snip) The school introduced a healthy eating policy at the start of term with a letter to parents outlining that chocolate, sweets, crisps and fizzy drinks were not allowed.

Monica Lewinsky: Why GOP can´t stop

Washington - The Monica Lewinsky scandal has returned to US politics, after a fashion - Sen. Rand Paul (R) of Kentucky raised it late last month on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” saying President Bill Clinton engaged in “predatory behavior” in his affair with the young intern in 1995 and 1996. Since then the Clinton/Lewinsky subject has arisen on many political chat shows as hosts ask guests to discuss its possible significance to a Hillary Clinton presidential candidacy. David Gregory asked Mitt Romney the Lewinsky question on “Meet the Press” on Sunday, for instance. The 2012 GOP nominee started off by

Dwayne Stovall wants Texans to know that U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell ´looks and fights like a turtle,´ and he hopes that image will bleed over to Republican Sen. John Cornyn – the man whose job he wants. ´We Texans don´t need a Beltway turtle telling us how to fight,´ Stovall says in his newest video ad. The slight is related to what Stovall sees as a lack of action from Cornyn, the state´s senior senator and the Senate Minority Whip, to block elements of the Affordable Care Act. Ted Cruz, the junior senator, won national attention in September for monopolizing the

Obama, the shrinking imperialist president

Of all the time-honored failings for which we criticize sitting presidents — by "we" I mean pundits, academics and other members of the chattering phylum — two charges stand out: imperialism and shrinkage. Usually it´s one or the other. When the president is unpopular or when he´s lost control of his agenda or when he just seems inadequate to the demands of the job, the headline "The Incredible Shrinking Presidency" proliferates like kudzu. When the Republicans lost control of Congress in 2006, the Economist proclaimed "The Incredible Shrinking Presidency" of George W. Bush on its cover. Barack Obama has been

Trump fires top advisor &

Donald Trump couldn’t pass up the opportunity to say, “You’re fired” to an underling — even when the man offered to resign. Furious over a snarky Buzzfeed article about his political aspirations, the developer took a page out of his TV show, “The Apprentice,’’ and booted the adviser who had urged him to do the interview. “I told [Trump] when he fired me, ‘Sir, I’m willing to offer you my resignation.’ He didn’t accept that,’’ 32-year-old political consultant Sam Nunberg told The Post. But “this is not unfair, honestly,’’ insisted Nunberg, who lives on the Upper East Side. “I failed Mr. Trump, and that’s the long and short of it.”

Climate Prophets and Profiteers:

The weirdest thing about John Kerry´s weekend speech on climate-change—other than the fact that this is the same guy who in 1997 voted to forbid the U.S. from signing the Kyoto Protocol—is that it begins by quoting something Maurice Strong said at the U.N.´s 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro: "Every bit of evidence I´ve seen persuades me that we are on a course leading to tragedy." Maurice who? Mr. Strong, a former oil executive from Canada (he was Pierre Trudeau´s pick to run state-owned Petro-Canada in the mid-1970s), was for many years the U.N.´s ultimate mandarin.

Fury erupted last night after it emerged the elderly could be denied vital drugs under new funding rules. Older patients would effectively be written off on the grounds that they no longer make a big enough financial contribution to society. The Department of Health is demanding the changes in an attempt to cut the crippling NHS medicines bill. But Katherine Murphy, chief executive of the Patients’ Association, called the plans “disturbing and discriminatory”, adding: “Human life cannot be assessed in terms of cost and benefit.” The Daily Express, which is crusading for Respect For The Elderly, revealed earlier this month

Her daughter, Phoebe Alexiades, says Canfield died of lung cancer on Saturday at a hospice in the California coastal town of Santa Barbara. Canfield had appearances on a number of TV shows during a four-decade career, including General Hospital and The Hathaways. She was Harriet Kravitz on four episodes of the 1960s series Bewitched. As this old photograph from Somerset shows, it used to be water under the bridge. But that was in the 1960s, when the river was regularly dredged. Now, as the residents of Burrowbridge are all too aware, the width of this stretch of the River Parrett has practically halved. As a result it regularly bursts its banks, flowing over and around the bridge instead. In startling contrast to today´s scenario, the picture, taken five decades ago, shows a wide expanse of water passing through Burrowbridge with plenty of room for water levels to rise. According to the documents, The Apothecary Shoppe, of Tulsa, will not prepare or provide pentobarbital or any other drug for use in Michael Taylor´s execution. The documents ask a judge to dismiss the case that Taylor´s lawyers had filed against the pharmacy seeking to stop it from providing the execution drug. A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday. Student debt may hurt housing recovery

The growing student loan burden carried by millions of Americans threatens to undermine the housing recovery’s momentum by discouraging, or even blocking, a generation of potential buyers from purchasing their first homes. Recent improvements in the housing market have been fueled largely by investors who snapped up homes in the past few years. But that demand is waning as prices climb and mortgage rates rise. An analysis by the Mortgage Bankers Association found that loan applications for home purchases have slipped nearly 20 percent in the past four months compared with the same period a year earlier.

After a tumultuous week of party infighting and leadership stumbles, congressional Republicans are focused on calming their divided ranks in the months ahead, mostly by touting proposals that have wide backing within the GOP and shelving any big-ticket legislation for the rest of the year. Comprehensive immigration reform, tax reform, tweaks to the federal health-care law — bipartisan deals on each are probably dead in the water for the rest of this Congress. “We don’t have 218 votes in the House for the big issues, so what else are we going to do?” said Rep. Rancho Mirage, Calif. - President Barack Obama marked the five-year anniversary of a controversial economic stimulus plan by releasing a report on Monday saying that government spending averted a second Great Depression, setting off a new round of partisan debate about the decision. Obama had been in office only a month when he signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, a $787 billion stimulus that Democratic majorities in both the Senate and House of Representatives passed over the objections of Republicans. Many Americans remain doubtful about how helpful the stimulus was for an economy that still

Immigrant rights activists, including some self-identified illegal immigrants, were arrested outside the White House on Monday as part of a protest against President Obama’s deportation policies, signaling that even as Republicans take blame for halting legalization legislation, Democrats face political peril, too. Mr. Obama was out of town, playing golf in California, so he wasn’t at the White House during the protests outside the North Lawn, on the sidewalk along Pennsylvania Avenue. With action on immigration stalled in Congress, attention is turning back to the administration. Activists say Mr. Obama needs to expand

In delivering aid to drought-stricken California last week, President Obama and his aides cited the state as an example of what could be in store for much of the rest of the country as human-caused climate change intensifies. But in doing so, they were pushing at the boundaries of scientific knowledge about the relationship between climate change and drought. While a trend of increasing drought that may be linked to global warming has been documented in some regions, including parts of the Mediterranean and in the Southwestern United States, there is no scientific consensus yet that it is a worldwide

Federal agents believe drug cartels have moved into Colorado and are using the recent legalization of marijuana within the state as a front to make money illegally. “Son of God” producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey have cast Satan out of their upcoming Biblical epic about Jesus Christ, an individual familiar with the 20th Century Fox project has told TheWrap. “Son of God” is a reshaped version of last year’s hit History Channel miniseries “The Bible,” which co-starred Mohamen Mehdi Ouazanni as Satan. Burnett and Downey came under fire last year because Ouazanni bears a striking resemblance to President Barack Obama, though the producers said at the time that the casting controversy was unintentional and merely coincidental. “Someone made a comment that the actor who played the
