Texas officials have shut down a Houston abortion clinic and suspended the license of its doctor under a new state law requiring physicians who perform the procedure to hold admitting privileges at a nearby hospital. The Department of State Health Services has revoked the abortion license of A Affordable Women´s Medical Center and the Texas Medical Board has temporarily suspended the medical license of Dr. Theodore M. Herring Jr., the facility´s medical director and sole provider of abortions, the agencies announced Friday. Herring unlawfully performed 268 abortions between Nov. 6 and Feb. 7, according to the two agencies. The disciplinary

The White House Correspondents Association certainly doesn´t have any "edgy" anti-Obama comics lined up to zing the president like Stephen Colbert whacked Bush in 2006. For this year´s correspondents´ dinner (celebrated on Twitter as "Nerd prom"), they picked Joel McHale, star of NBC´s perpetually ratings-saggy sitcom "Community" and the E! channel talk show "The Soup." In the Los Angeles Times, we´re told McHale will mock both parties and the media: "We´re thrilled that Joel will headline the dinner when we celebrate our centennial," said WHCA President Steven Thomma in a statement. "He´s sharp, funny, and just the type of comic

The first five years of life form the heart, mind, and soul of each person and the same applies to popular movements that resist the imposition of tyranny. Some are stunted by early adversity, some become perverted by power, and others thrive against all odds until victory is achieved. February 27th will mark five years since the first Tea Party rallies sprang up in American cities and towns just one week after Rick Santelli expressed obvious truths long ignored in the public debate. Wrapping up his soliloquy on another government bailout Santelli thundered, “We’re thinking of having a Chicago Tea Party.

No Ann Romney Treatment: Media

Michael W. Chapman of our sister site CNSNews.com reports on cost estimates for the hand-sewn gown Michelle Obama wore at Tuesday’s state dinner for the prime minister of France. Think five figures. If Ann Romney were First Lady now, would that escape the media’s politicized scrutiny? (In 2012, she was slammed for wearing a $990 shirt on "CBS This Morning." Wednesday’s Washington Post merely carried the headline “America, elegantly draped over her shoulders” next to a foot-high page-dominating photograph of Mrs. Obama in the dress. Michelle-loving fashion writer Robin Givhan insisted only “churlish” rumblers would lower themselves to asking about the

The United Auto Workers Union lost a hugely important unionization election vote at Volkswagen´s Chattanooga, Tennessee assembly plant, going down to defeat in a 712-626 vote (53%-47%), with roughly 165 workers, or 11%, not voting. Thus, in fact, only 41.65% of the total workforce voted in favor of unionization. This is a historic defeat for unionization of the private sector (snip)The American union movement is now even more solidly a government employee phenomenon, which makes it all the more vulnerable to public opinion which is shifting to a negative opinion towards it, as self-serving and greedy. The latest Gallup poll shows that not all of America is in economic doldrums. What "state" has the most optimism about the economy? Not a "state" at all, but the national capital: the District of Columbia. In fact, only in the District of Columbia do people have a net positive confidence in the economy -- at +19, according to the Gallup poll. All the states of the republic have a pessimistic view of the economy, with the least pessimistic state in the Gallup poll being Massachusetts (where the negative confidence rating in the economy of only -1). What was the national

U.S. military deaths in Afghanistan have skyrocketed under President Obama. Since 2009, 73 percent of all U.S. deaths in the country have taken place, amounting to 27.1 fatalities per month, on average. Billy and Karen Vaughn, Gold Star parents of Special Operations Chief (SEAL) Aaron Vaughn who was killed in action in 2011, are speaking out about why. U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan are now forced to fight a two-fronted war. Before each deployment, these soldiers understand fully that day after day they will do battle against relentless terrorists with shifting loyalties and unspeakable hatred. But what none of them could have

It should come as no surprise to anyone that the White House has chosen — for the 13th time in a year — to make changes to the Affordable Care Act delaying its full implementation. The law is a mess — passed by Democrats, most of whom hadn’t bothered to read the legislation, without a single Republican vote. Nonetheless, the latest changes announced this week should embarrass even the most sycophantic ObamaCare enthusiast. The act was sold on the promise that the estimated 40 million Americans who were without health insurance would finally be covered. The law forces employers with 50

Other than the basic fact that he dearly wants a bill, Speaker John Boehner´s specific plans on immigration have remained shrouded in mystery since the 2012 elections. Now two key immigration hawks are pressing him for answers in a letter you might mistake as coming from Darrell Issa to Kathleen Sebelius. Reps. Walter Jones (R-NC) and Mo Brooks (R-AL) sent Boehner, House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, and the rest of the House GOP leadership team a letter asking ten detailed questions about Boehner´s immigration policies. The questions include requests for greater detail about some of the planks in the immigration

On Monday, August 17, 1942, in what would be the first of many partings over the next two years, Pat saw her husband off at Washington’s Union Station. Dick Nixon, then a 29-year-old lawyer for the government’s Office of Price Administration, endured a gloomy train ride to Rhode Island for two months of rigorous officer training at Quonset Point, the first week of which, Dick wrote Pat, “was the longest I’ve ever known.” He disliked studying naval science and ballistics and was no fan of the arduous physical training in the summer humidity. The Department of Health and Human Services added a high-dollar Democratic donor to its list of most-wanted fugitives on Friday in connection with a widespread scheme of alleged Medicare and Medicaid fraud. Dr. Yousef Kurdy owned and operated a California business called the Broadway Medical Center. He was arrested on charges of fraud, aggravated identity theft, aiding and abetting, criminal forfeiture, tax evasion, and violations of anti-kickback laws in January of 2012. According to investigators, Kurdy fraudulently billed Medicare and Medi-Cal, California’s state Medicaid agency, over $150,000 for fictional patient visits. “Investigators believe that Kurdy billed for office visits on dates that he

Rand Paul’s Frivolous NSA Lawsuit

In what looks more like a publicity stunt than a serious legal challenge, Senator Rand Paul has filed a class-action lawsuit against President Obama and other top executive-branch officials, claiming that the National Security Agency’s metadata-collection program violates the Fourth Amendment. The suit is no surprise. I’ve previously noted that, despite his “constitutional conservative” branding, Senator Paul can sound just like a “living Constitution” progressive when it suits him: He finds the data collection offensive, so ipso facto it must be not only unwise policy but a violation of fundamental law. I am surprised, though, to find former Virginia attorney general

All those hoping for an end to the ongoing security agreement standoff between Afghanistan and the United States awoke to some good news Thursday: German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who had just returned to Berlin after meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, said that Karzai told him he would sign the agreement. “He said to me very clearly: The deal has been negotiated, it would not be amended, and “Steinmeier told German parliament on Thursday afternoon. “I was pleased that Karzai said very clearly that Afghanistan would in any case sign.” Steinmeier’s statement, however, came with one important caveat: Karzai gave

Not so long ago the Constitution got respect. But now, not so much. President Obama is on his way to repealing the separation of powers, and the 10th Amendment is on life-support, ignored by federal judges who know better than the legislatures of Utah, Oklahoma, Kentucky and Virginia. Mischief-makers in black robes insist on redefining marriage to suit their peculiar fancy. U.S. District Court Judge Judge Arenda L. Wright Allen last week nullified an amendment to their state constitution as ratified by Virginia voters. “Tradition is revered in the Commonwealth, and often rightly so,” wrote Judge Wright Allen, “However, tradition alone cannot

Jonathan Turley, faithful Obama supporter and liberal professor of constitutional law at Sandra Fluke´s alma mater, Georgetown University Law School, is sounding the alarm that "a system in which a single individual is allowed to rewrite legislation or ignore legislation is a system that borders on authoritarianism." Question for Mr. Turley: what kind of constitutional law professor votes for an inexperienced community organizer who believes that the U.S. Constitution is "fundamentally flawed" in the first place?

In watching both the recently released Netflix documentary Mitt, as well as NBC’s putting out to pasture of Jay Leno (again), I was struck by the current cultural attitudes toward those generally perceived as “nice” people. Apart from the hackneyed “If it bleeds, it leads” response you’ll get from most people when the topic of how we treat household names in the media comes up, there is a real (and I would add sick) pleasure Americans experience when nice guys finish last. We like jerks. And if someone isn’t a jerk, but we don’t like their politics or street-cred as a

In the business world, a diligent board of directors would have long ago fired CEO Obama. Sometimes it takes only a year of less than expected earnings to result in the termination of a corporate CEO. A couple of underperforming years and a few reasons more, and a CEO would have his bags packed and stowed underneath his buck-stopping desk. A long list of problems -- especially one suggesting even a hint of fraud -- that fails to generate a satisfactory board response would stir shareholders and lenders to demand the resignation of not only the CEO and other key employees,

Our earwax could help prove our identity and even reveal what we´ve eaten and where we´ve been, researchers have discovered. Scientists from the Monell Center say the substance could even reveal information about our sexual orientation and health. They say new tests could be developed to prove people´s ID - and their ethnicity could be determined simply by looking in their ear. ´Our previous research has shown that underarm odors can convey a great deal of information about an individual, including personal identity, gender, sexual orientation, and health status,´ said study senior author George Preti, PhD, an organic chemist at

Mrs. Obama’s arrival amid tight security was expected to delay the arrival of other wealthy vacationers on private jets at the Colorado ski resort. CAMBRIDGE, Md.—Dreary weather, low turnout, and an icy political outlook for this year´s election chilled the House Democratic retreat here. Even an appearance by Vice President Joe Biden got snowed out. President Obama is still expected to speak Friday to the 110 or so lawmakers—just over half the caucus—who made it to talk strategy at a tony hotel better suited for summer. And Biden is apt to make it, too. But digging out of this malaise will take more energy than Obama´s speech can deliver, even as Democratic leaders circulated word that the president has committed to do at least six fundraisers

In addition to his role as chauffeur, he has also been providing the mayor with physical security and workout tips. Together they ease into a reserved spot in the salt-stained parking garage and
