Dem Donor Added to HHS

The Department of Health and Human Services added a high-dollar Democratic donor to its list of most-wanted fugitives on Friday in connection with a widespread scheme of alleged Medicare and Medicaid fraud. Dr. Yousef Kurdy owned and operated a California business called the Broadway Medical Center. He was arrested on charges of fraud, aggravated identity theft, aiding and abetting, criminal forfeiture, tax evasion, and violations of anti-kickback laws in January of 2012. According to investigators, Kurdy fraudulently billed Medicare and Medi-Cal, California’s state Medicaid agency, over $150,000 for fictional patient visits. “Investigators believe that Kurdy billed for office visits on dates that he

Rand Paul’s Frivolous NSA Lawsuit

In what looks more like a publicity stunt than a serious legal challenge, Senator Rand Paul has filed a class-action lawsuit against President Obama and other top executive-branch officials, claiming that the National Security Agency’s metadata-collection program violates the Fourth Amendment. The suit is no surprise. I’ve previously noted that, despite his “constitutional conservative” branding, Senator Paul can sound just like a “living Constitution” progressive when it suits him: He finds the data collection offensive, so ipso facto it must be not only unwise policy but a violation of fundamental law. I am surprised, though, to find former Virginia attorney general

All those hoping for an end to the ongoing security agreement standoff between Afghanistan and the United States awoke to some good news Thursday: German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who had just returned to Berlin after meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, said that Karzai told him he would sign the agreement. “He said to me very clearly: The deal has been negotiated, it would not be amended, and “Steinmeier told German parliament on Thursday afternoon. “I was pleased that Karzai said very clearly that Afghanistan would in any case sign.” Steinmeier’s statement, however, came with one important caveat: Karzai gave

Not so long ago the Constitution got respect. But now, not so much. President Obama is on his way to repealing the separation of powers, and the 10th Amendment is on life-support, ignored by federal judges who know better than the legislatures of Utah, Oklahoma, Kentucky and Virginia. Mischief-makers in black robes insist on redefining marriage to suit their peculiar fancy. U.S. District Court Judge Judge Arenda L. Wright Allen last week nullified an amendment to their state constitution as ratified by Virginia voters. “Tradition is revered in the Commonwealth, and often rightly so,” wrote Judge Wright Allen, “However, tradition alone cannot

Members of Congress want to know how Obamacare exchanges in Oregon and Maryland could have spent hundreds of millions in federal money on websites that don’t work. “The catastrophic breakdown of Cover Oregon is unacceptable and taxpayers deserve accountability,” House Energy and Commerce Committee leadership wrote to the General Accountability Office Thursday. Meanwhile, Maryland Rep. Andy Harris and Georgia Rep. Jack Kingston, both Republicans, addressed their letter on the Maryland Obamacare exchange to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) inspector general, requesting an immediate “formal investigation into the flagrant waste and abuse of taxpayer monies.” Oregon and Maryland were among Obamacare’s

Jonathan Turley, faithful Obama supporter and liberal professor of constitutional law at Sandra Fluke´s alma mater, Georgetown University Law School, is sounding the alarm that "a system in which a single individual is allowed to rewrite legislation or ignore legislation is a system that borders on authoritarianism." Question for Mr. Turley: what kind of constitutional law professor votes for an inexperienced community organizer who believes that the U.S. Constitution is "fundamentally flawed" in the first place?

In watching both the recently released Netflix documentary Mitt, as well as NBC’s putting out to pasture of Jay Leno (again), I was struck by the current cultural attitudes toward those generally perceived as “nice” people. Apart from the hackneyed “If it bleeds, it leads” response you’ll get from most people when the topic of how we treat household names in the media comes up, there is a real (and I would add sick) pleasure Americans experience when nice guys finish last. We like jerks. And if someone isn’t a jerk, but we don’t like their politics or street-cred as a

In the business world, a diligent board of directors would have long ago fired CEO Obama. Sometimes it takes only a year of less than expected earnings to result in the termination of a corporate CEO. A couple of underperforming years and a few reasons more, and a CEO would have his bags packed and stowed underneath his buck-stopping desk. A long list of problems -- especially one suggesting even a hint of fraud -- that fails to generate a satisfactory board response would stir shareholders and lenders to demand the resignation of not only the CEO and other key employees,

Our earwax could help prove our identity and even reveal what we´ve eaten and where we´ve been, researchers have discovered. Scientists from the Monell Center say the substance could even reveal information about our sexual orientation and health. They say new tests could be developed to prove people´s ID - and their ethnicity could be determined simply by looking in their ear. ´Our previous research has shown that underarm odors can convey a great deal of information about an individual, including personal identity, gender, sexual orientation, and health status,´ said study senior author George Preti, PhD, an organic chemist at

Mrs. Obama’s arrival amid tight security was expected to delay the arrival of other wealthy vacationers on private jets at the Colorado ski resort. FRESNO — Farmers in California´s drought-stricken Central Valley said the financial assistance President Barack Obama delivered on his visit Friday does not get to the heart of California´s long-term water problems. Amid one of the driest years in the state´s recorded history, Obama came to the Fresno area to announce $100 million in livestock-disaster aid, $60 million to support food banks and $13 million toward things such as conservation and helping rural communities that could soon run out of drinking water. CAMBRIDGE, Md.—Dreary weather, low turnout, and an icy political outlook for this year´s election chilled the House Democratic retreat here. Even an appearance by Vice President Joe Biden got snowed out. President Obama is still expected to speak Friday to the 110 or so lawmakers—just over half the caucus—who made it to talk strategy at a tony hotel better suited for summer. And Biden is apt to make it, too. But digging out of this malaise will take more energy than Obama´s speech can deliver, even as Democratic leaders circulated word that the president has committed to do at least six fundraisers

Deep underneath its two curved towers, on a cold and bitter January day, His Worship Mayor Rob Ford sits in the passenger seat of a black Cadillac Escalade, driven by a hulking bodybuilder named Jerry Agyemang. In addition to his role as chauffeur, he has also been providing the mayor with physical security and workout tips. Online trolls have serious personality issues such as Machiavellianism, one of the biggest studies into trolling has found. Researchers say that online commenters display traits that are Narcissistic, psychopathic, and sadistic and the worse the problems, the longer the person spent online. They found the most common trait was to exhibit sadistic behaviour. [Snip] They said the trolls displayed what is known as the ´Dark Tetrad´ of personality in two tests developed. ´Both studies revealed similar patterns of relations between trolling and the Dark Tetrad of personality: trolling correlated positively with sadism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism, using both enjoyment ratings and

American physicians, worried about changes in the health care market, are streaming into salaried jobs with hospitals. Though the shift from private practice has been most pronounced in primary care, specialists are following. Last year, 64 percent of job offers filled through Merritt Hawkins, one of the nation’s leading physician placement firms, involved hospital employment, compared with only 11 percent in 2004. The firm anticipates a rise to 75 percent in the next two years. Today, about 60 percent of family doctors and pediatricians, 50 percent of surgeons and 25 percent of surgical subspecialists — such as ophthalmologists and ear, nose and

The Internal Revenue Service has been in some hot water lately for allegedly targeting political enemies. In 2013, it was revealed that the federal tax agency systematically hassled and unfairly scrutinized nonprofit organizations applying for tax-exempt status, simply on the basis of their names or assumed political leanings. The fact that most victims were organizations that had Tea Party- or conservative-sounding names was a big red flag of government-backed political harassment. So far, the issue is unresolved. The House Oversight and Government Reform and Ways and Means committees have been holding hearings to determine wrongdoing and responsibility. State-backed political abuse is horrible on its

Wyoming officials are taking the Environmental Protection Agency to court in a bid to reverse a sweeping agency ruling that transferred more than 1 million acres of land -- including an entire city -- to Native American tribes. Wyoming Attorney General Peter K. Michael filed his state´s appeal Friday morning before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit. The state wants either the EPA to reverse, or the courts to overturn, a December ruling on a request from the Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone tribes. The tribes had sought "state status" in order to administer air quality monitoring. The EPA,

SEATTLE -- For marijuana dispensaries around the country, the days of doing business in cash - driving around with bill-stuffed envelopes to pay the rent, or showing up at a state revenue office with $20,000 in paper bags for the tax man - can´t end soon enough. It´s not clear that the Obama administration´s new guidance on pot-related banking is going to end them. The Justice and Treasury Departments on Friday issued banks a road map for doing business with marijuana firms. The security-wary pot industry, including recreational shops in Colorado and medical marijuana operators elsewhere, welcomed the long-awaited news, but banking

President Obama told House Democrats Friday that comprehensive immigration reform remains a top priority for this year in spite of Republican lawmakers who are “scared” of the political consequences. “They’re worried and they’re scared about the political blowback,” Mr. Obama said of the GOP. “We can all appreciate the maneuverings that take place, particularly in an election year.” Speaker John A. Boehner has said that the House probably won’t approve comprehensive immigration reform this year because Republicans don’t trust Mr. Obama to improve border security. So good, in fact, that she and her leadership team felt the need to caution their House Democratic troops not to gloat over the fact that they had scored a clean win against the majority Republicans over raising the debt ceiling. But as the House Democrats met for their annual retreat in this Eastern Shore town, there was one subject the minority leader appeared determined to avoid: her grim prospects for regaining the speaker’s gavel in this year’s midterm elections. “That’s not
