Rudi Ion struggles to count up the children from his huge Romanian clan who now call Britain home. It could be 100, he tells me. ‘I’ve got 25 cousins all living around Nottingham, each with three or four kids,’ he adds with a loud laugh. (Snip) What is particularly striking, according to the ONS, is that Romanians who come to Britain are actually having more than twice as many children as they would at home, where the average is 1.25 children born to each family. In a Blow to Organized

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — In a defeat for organized labor in the South, employees at the Volkswagen plant here voted 712 to 626 against joining the United Automobile Workers, even though the company did not oppose the unionization drive. The U.A.W.’s loss — in what was one of the most closely watched unionization votes in decades — is expected to slow, perhaps stymie, the union’s plans to organize other auto plants in the South. Two other German-owned plants, Mercedes-Benz in Alabama and BMW in South Carolina, have been among its top targets.

VW workers in Tennessee stun UAW,

CHATTANOOGA, TENN. — The UAW suffered a devastating defeat at Volkswagen’s plant here as workers rejected union representation by a 712-626 margin. The defeat, which came despite Volkswagen’s neutrality, tarnishes UAW President Bob King’s legacy and could make it next to impossible for the union to extend its reach beyond domestic automakers.
“While we certainly would have liked a victory for workers here, we deeply respect the Volkswagen Global Group Works Council, Volkswagen management and (German union) IG Metall for doing their best to create a free and open atmosphere for workers to exercise their basic human right to form a union,” King said in a statement.

The Clearwater Regional Chamber of Commerce was thrilled when NBC News asked to televise its upcoming debate with candidates in Pinellas County´s closely watched congressional race. "You don´t get very many opportunities to get national TV," said Bob Clifford, the chamber´s president and CEO. But the plan, which would have featured NBC News Political Director Chuck Todd as moderator, ended when Democrat Alex Sink´s campaign rejected the idea, Clifford said Friday."The issue was that they didn´t want to do a nationally televised event," he said, and suggested directing any other questions to the Sink campaign

Workers at a Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tenn., have rejected the United Auto Workers, shooting down the union’s hopes of securing a foothold at a foreign-owned auto plant in the South. The vote was 712 to 626, the UAW said. The vote, announced late Friday night after three days of balloting, is a devastating loss for the UAW, whose membership has plummeted from a high of 1.5 million in 1979 to around 400,000 today. Outgoing UAW President Bob King had staked his legacy on organizing a Southern auto plant for the first time. But the decision is a triumph for Tennessee

In 2009, Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) apologized profusely to the White House for shouting, "You lie!" as President Barack Obama told Congress that Obamacare would not cover illegal immigrants. Now it would appear that the White House owes Wilson an apology, as Covered California--the flagship of state Obamacare exchanges--is recruiting illegal ("undocumented") immigrants to sign up for the program, regardless of their eligibility. The Covered California website includes a special page entitled: "No temas si eres indocumentado/a y quieres inscribir a tu familia en un seguro médico" ("Fear not if you are undocumented and want to enroll your family in health

New information about the intelligence available in the immediate aftermath of the Benghazi attack raises questions about whether the former No. 2 at the CIA downplayed or dismissed reporting from his own people in Libya that it was a coordinated attack and not an out-of-control protest over an anti-Islam video. Then-Deputy Director Mike Morell, whose own agency lost two employees at Benghazi, former Navy Seals Ty Woods and Glen Doherty, was heavily involved in editing the administration’s internal narrative on what happened – known as the “talking points” – which served as the basis for then-U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice’s controversial

That picture is clearing up. The list of potential victims that acquisitive trial lawyers could separate from their money includes the oil and gas industry, the alcohol trade, drug companies and the firearms business. All would be fine trophies for the plaintiffs´ attorneys. It appears, however, that the next victim will be the food industry. Banks can do business with marijuana sellers in states where use has been legalized either for recreational or medicinal purposes, under a new policy the Obama administration announced Friday. In a seven-page memo, the Treasury Department said it will not target bank transactions with marijuana businesses in those states as long as the businesses are properly licensed and the banks are taking steps to make sure the businesses don’t show signs of gang or cartel-connected activity. But banks will continue to be required to report on any suspicious activity they see, even in those states where marijuana use has been

Gun Control: In a massive display of civil disobedience, tens of thousands of state residents have refused to register what the left calls assault weapons, instantly making them criminals guilty of a felony. The legacy of the Connecticut residents who used their privately owned firearms to help overthrow the tyrannical colonial rule of King George III, who probably considered their muskets the military-style assault weapon of the day, apparently lives on. Connecticuters in the tens, perhaps hundreds, of thousands have refused to comply with a law, adopted after the December 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, requiring them to register what

President Obama predicted at the House Democratic retreat on Friday that "10 years from now, five years from now" people will look back on the Affordable Care Act as "a monumental achievement." He´s right in the limited sense that, given the delays he has sanctioned so far, it will take years before anyone can tell if it works. Now that we´ve had more time to parse this week´s announcement of a second delay of the employer mandate, the political reason for the carve-out is becoming clearer. Far from the economic relief that the White House claimed, the rule is meant to

San Diego, California -- Clarence Thomas has an abundance of two things that are often in short supply whenever Americans talk about race: courage and common sense. The only African-American on the Supreme Court displayed both this week in speaking to a small gathering of students and faculty at Palm Beach Atlantic University, a nondenominational Christian school in Florida. In a series of provocative and insightful comments about race that were first reported by Yahoo! News and confirmed by several people who attended the talk and heard the remarks firsthand, Thomas dropped a few bombshells.

However, Obama will likely have little say over whether immigration reform gets across the finish line. House Republicans are sharply divided about the timing of an immigration package, with some saying the issue should remain on the backburner until after the midterm elections.
