Eva Moskowitz: Teachers
Union Enemy No. 1
Wall Street Journal, by Matthew Kaminski    Original Article

For several months running, the Bill and Eva Show has been the talk of New York City politics. He is the new mayor, Bill de Blasio, an unapologetic old-school liberal Democrat, scourge of the rich and of public charter schools. She is Eva Moskowitz, fellow Democrat and educational-reform champion who runs the city´s largest charter network. How did Ms. Moskowitz, a hero to thousands of New Yorkers of modest means whose children have been able to get a better education than their local public schools offered, end up becoming public enemy No. 1? She is the city´s most prominent, and vocal, advocate

President Obama predicted at the House Democratic retreat on Friday that "10 years from now, five years from now" people will look back on the Affordable Care Act as "a monumental achievement." He´s right in the limited sense that, given the delays he has sanctioned so far, it will take years before anyone can tell if it works. Now that we´ve had more time to parse this week´s announcement of a second delay of the employer mandate, the political reason for the carve-out is becoming clearer. Far from the economic relief that the White House claimed, the rule is meant to

Look up irony in the dictionary and you´ll find Barack Obama. The president made it known before his 2014 State of the Union address that he plans to bypass Congress this year to push his agenda forward. Does anyone remember when then-Senator Obama said he took the Constitution "very seriously?" Yeah, that´s right. In 2008, Obama was worried about George Bush bypassing Congress – and vowed to do something about it if he was elected president later that year. You know I taught constitutional law for ten years. I take the Constitution very seriously – the biggest problems that were

Donald Trump loves it when the media talks about him, so perhaps it should come as no surprise that he let BuzzFeed writer McKay Coppins trail him for 36 hours for a profile that ended up being focused on Trump’s delusions of political grandeur. (Snip) The notion that he is simply too big — too presidential — for a measly job in the Albany Statehouse has temporarily quelled his insecurity. But after this morning, Trump can no longer escape the fact that his political “career” — a long con that the blustery billionaire has perpetrated on the country for 25 years by repeatedly pretending to consider various runs for office, only to bail

Clarence Thomas is right about race

San Diego, California -- Clarence Thomas has an abundance of two things that are often in short supply whenever Americans talk about race: courage and common sense. The only African-American on the Supreme Court displayed both this week in speaking to a small gathering of students and faculty at Palm Beach Atlantic University, a nondenominational Christian school in Florida. In a series of provocative and insightful comments about race that were first reported by Yahoo! News and confirmed by several people who attended the talk and heard the remarks firsthand, Thomas dropped a few bombshells.

Obama: Immigration reform will

President Obama predicted in an interview airing Friday that immigration reform would get passed before the end of his second term. “I believe it will get done before my presidency is over,” Obama said during an interview with Univision Radio. “I’d like to get it done this year,” he added. However, Obama will likely have little say over whether immigration reform gets across the finish line. House Republicans are sharply divided about the timing of an immigration package, with some saying the issue should remain on the backburner until after the midterm elections.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) explained fellow Republican senators’ anger over his filibuster of the debt-ceiling vote by saying that they hate being “forced to tell the truth.” “In the 13 months I’ve been in the Senate, it has become apparent to me the single thing that Republican politicians hate and fear the most, and that is when they’re forced to tell the truth. It makes their heads explode,” Cruz told radio host Mark Levin Thursday. Cruz tried to filibuster a vote in the Senate to raise the debt ceiling Wednesday, forcing the approval of 60 senators instead of a simple majority. That

Then, it labels individual users based on their musical tastes and whether those artists are more

JUNEAU, Alaska – The U.S. State Department plans to create an Arctic ambassador position to highlight the growing importance of that region. In a letter to U.S. Sen. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said she had no personnel announcements to make, but might soon. Kerry, in the letter, said he believed it was vital to elevate Arctic issues and interests within the State Department. Nations across the world are hurrying to stake claims to

Earlier this week Senator Ted Cruz took to doing what he enjoys most: Lecturing the GOP “establishment” from his moral Mt. Olympus. Speaking critically about the vote to raise the debt limit, Cruz–who insisted on a 60-vote threshold to end debate on the measure–said some lawmakers are “willing to mortgage our children’s future” because they “care so much about being praised by the Washington media” and don’t think voters are paying attention. “But sometimes, come November, the people remember,” the junior senator from Texas declared. Actually, come mid-February, the people still remember. At least I do. I remember that Senator Cruz championed legislative

The impending threat of communism in Venezuela is now a reality with the “Decree with Range, Value and Force of Fair Prices” published in the country’s Official Gazette on January 24, issued by President Nicolás Maduro thanks to the special powers granted through an enabling law by lawmakers of the chavismo regime in November of last year. The destructive power of this decree over businesses is enormous when compared to other similar laws passed by Congress over the last 15 years, and that’s a lot to say. Not in vain the goal of that decree is quite explicit: Consolidating the economic

Such criticism reflects "the interests of those who are frustrated by Russia´s successes," Russian Railways chief Vladimir Yakunin recently wrote. CAMBRIDGE, Md. -- President Obama told House Democrats on Friday that his executive power to help immigrants who are in the U.S. without legal status is limited and urged them to keep pressing for legislation to overhaul the immigration system. "Don´t take your foot off the pedal," the president said in remarks to a closed-door meeting of his Democratic allies, who were gathered for the party´s annual issues retreat on the Eastern Shore. Hopes have substantially dimmed for immigration law changes this year after House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) downplayed the chances that the chamber´s Republican majority would take

The president just signed into law the Agricultural Act of 2014, a multiyear, comprehensive agricultural, rural, and nutrition policy measure. As legislation goes, it was rather unremarkable. What was remarkable was the path it followed to approval. Unlike most farm bill debates, which tend to be festivals of bipartisanship and comity, this one split lawmakers—rural from urban, House from Senate, Republican from Democrat—along every political fault including between the Tea Party caucus and the rest of the GOP.

A century-old debate over whether presidents should reward political donors and allies by making them ambassadors has flared again following a string of embarrassing gaffes by President Obama’s picks. The nominee for ambassador to Norway, for example, prompted outrage in Oslo by characterizing one of the nation’s ruling parties as extremist. A soap-opera producer slated for Hungary appeared to have little knowledge of the country she would be living in. A prominent Obama bundler nominated to be ambassador to Argentina acknowledged that he had never set foot in the country and doesn’t speak Spanish.

One morning last September, the red carpet was laid in Raleigh, N.C., for the 2013 International Bluegrass Music Awards, which had moved there from Nashville to escape country music’s shadow.
