Happy Birthday, Abe! The 16th president of the United States would have turned 205 years old today. For decades, Lincoln has consistently been ranked first or second in polls for the best U.S. president. He served as president from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. During that time he led the United States through the Civil War, preserved the Union and abolished slavery. The son of a Kentucky frontiersman, Lincoln was born in a one-room log cabin on the Sinking Spring Farm in Hardin County. Five months before receiving the Republican Party´s nomination for president in 1860, he

Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) defended Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) on Wednesday after the House passed a clean debt-limit bill that raised the ire of conservatives. King branded as “morons” many conservatives in the GOP caucus who consistently oppose any effort to pass the debt limit, asserting they are the same faction that led to the government shutdown last year. “This is the same group that back in September and October went into a government shutdown that everybody knew was a disaster,” King said on MSNBC. “They ended up looking like morons following Ted Cruz over the cliff.” King had been

In Florida’s 26th district, Democrats are running away from the president completely, and Obamacare in part: [Video] Now, it is true that Garcia doesn’t call for repeal. Indeed, the ad boasts that the candidate is “working to fix” the law, and it praises him both for holding “insurance companies accountable” and for defending the provision that prevents insurance companies from denying coverage to those with pre-existing conditions. But it is fascinating to watch a Political Action Committee associated with Nancy “we’re going to run on Obamacare” Pelosi slamming the White House for “the disastrous healthcare website” and boasting — without

Impeach President Obama?

As Steve has just argued, if Mitt Romney had been elected president and then proceeded to rewrite Obamacare on his alleged executive authority, Democrats would probably be screaming for his impeachment. So should Republicans be screaming for President Obama’s impeachment? John says no: Technically, President Obama’s misuse of executive agencies to harass his political opponents and his usurpation of Congress’s powers by purporting to rewrite statutes by executive decree–the Obamacare changes are not the only instances–are grounds for impeachment. These are, in fact, precisely the sorts of abuses for which the impeachment remedy was intended, and for which no other remedy is

Chris Christie hopes to bounce back

Chicago is a town — and Illinois, a state — that understands corruption. But for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, still dogged by a scandal over his administration´s role in a political retribution scheme, the Windy City will be no safe haven when he visits Tuesday to raise money for the Republican Governors Association, which he chairs. Christie will give a speech at the Economic Club of Chicago, followed by private meetings with donors during the afternoon and, later, a fundraising dinner. He'll draw an audience -- but, notably, not from the four Republican candidates for governor in Illinois, one of whom would be the beneficiary of the money Christie is hoping to attract.

Pupils at Coed-y-Brain Primary School, in Llanbradach, have been, according to head teacher Morian Morgan, “initiating games that involve simulating rape and sexual intercourse” and “having detailed discussion of drug use”. Staff at the school discovered that the worrying behaviour was a result of children coming into contact with Grand Theft Auto, or GTA, which follows the dark underworld of America’s biggest cities. Gossip in Jerusalem suggests that many Israelis misunderstand John Kerry’s obsession with the peace process: They believe that the 2004 Democratic presidential candidate is using Israeli-Palestinian negotiations as a platform to challenge Hillary Clinton for the 2016 nomination. That’s not likely. Instead, it’s in comparing Kerry’s dogged efforts to that of his predecessor that Kerry’s real motives become clear. Clinton left a light footprint as secretary of state because she didn’t want anything sticking to her when campaign season rolls around. Kerry on the other hand is doubling down on the peace process because the 70-year-old former senator knows this

Three days after announcing that the U.S. Justice Department will recognize same-sex marriages in all legal matters, even in states that forbid it, Attorney General Eric Holder took a swipe at states that don’t allow felons to vote. “In many states, felony disenfranchisement laws are still on the books. And the current scope of these policies is not only too significant to ignore -- it is also too unjust to tolerate,” Holder told a criminal justice forum at Georgetown University Law Center. Holder urged lawmakers “to stand together in overturning an unfortunate and outdated status quo.” And he called on the American

Have you ever wondered who was the greatest box-office star in Hollywood history? If you have, let me tell you this .?.?. It wasn’t Clark Gable. It wasn’t Marilyn Monroe. It wasn’t Elizabeth Taylor. And it wasn’t even Harry Potter and his amazing phantasmagorical exploits. They all made millions in their time, but in terms of bums on seats, and hard cash in the tills, they were completely upstaged by a bright-eyed, curly-haired six-year-old tot with dimples and ringlets who saved a major Hollywood studio from financial ruin and became, in the process, the most instantly recognisable and idolised figure in

On Monday, the Treasury Department announced a new regulation that frees employers with between 50 and 99 employees from complying until 2016 with the Affordable Care Act mandate that requires all employees with at least 50 full-time workers to buy them health insurance. Having failed in an earlier attempt to scupper the appointment of a prominent anti-Islamist Muslim to a statutory international religious freedom watchdog, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is actively trying to have him removed from the post. CAIR, a controversial lobby group that describes itself as “America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization,” wants the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) to investigate its vice-chairman, M. It was 3 a.m. Ahead glared the harsh lights of a security check point. Sochi was 60 miles behind. This was the outer edge of the “Ring of Steel” guarding the Olympics, and the Chrysler was aiming to get past it, to break free into the vast Russian countryside that lies beyond. The back of the car was crowded with uneasy, bewildered passengers. Most were drooling out of anxiety. One had thrown up several times, but at this moment

South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn stayed publicly neutral during most of the epic 2008 presidential primary battle between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. But former President Bill Clinton believed Clyburn was personally responsible for his wife’s 29-point drubbing in the pivotal Palmetto State -- and he let him know it in no uncertain terms. In a new memoir -- “Blessed Experiences: Genuinely Southern, Proudly Black” -- due out this spring, Clyburn recounts how an irate Bill Clinton called him the early morning after the January primary at 2:15 a.m. to take him to task. “If you bastards want a fight,

Democrats claim three million people have enrolled in private health insurance through Obamacare. But how many have actually paid for their plans? Several state exchanges have begun reporting the number of customers that did pay their first premiums, and some results are as low as 51 percent. The Obama administration defines HealthCare.gov enrollees as those who have simply selected plans, but not paid. If the limited data available plays out for more states, actual enrollment could be much lower than the three million private insurance signups currently claimed. Only five of the 15 state exchanges clearly differentiate between paid enrollments

That’s how many read the recent CBO report predicting job losses courtesy of Obamacare. Data on the condition of our long-term unemployed, and the impact of extended unemployment compensation points in the same direction. After five years of disappointing job growth, isn’t it time for the Obama White House to think more critically about why our workforce participation is at a 35-year low?
