OKLAHOMA CITY – It was Christmas in February for members of an Oklahoma House committee Monday. The House Common Education Committee approved by a 15-1 vote legislation saying that public school students, teachers and other staff members can greet each other with such traditional phrases as merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah and happy holidays. The committee passed the measure in spite of federal court rulings and U.S. Department of Education guidelines that say public schools already have the right to erect holiday displays with religious themes under certain circumstances and that students and teachers can greet each other with "Merry Christmas."The so-called

French President Francois Hollande is going stag, but the Obama administration is pulling out all the stops to entertain him with a State Dinner full of pomp, circumstance, gourmet eats, and R&B music. [Snip] L´affaire américaine will take place outdoors, in a tent on the South Lawn. Secret Service will have extra protection arrayed along the perimeter of the White House property. Under the tent, White House Executive Chef Cris Comerford will serve up the best of America, with a noted nod to the French. ´This event highlights the talents of our Nation’s cheese artisans,´ the printed program says.

I have written before about the strange propensity of the Tory part of this Government to shoot itself in the foot. Quite often it comes down to basic political mismanagement, either in Number 10 or in Parliament, when routine business is not transacted properly. Tories complain that MPs or peers who might have been able to prevent a screw-up are not listened to. And while the machine has good people in it, it is prone to avoidable malfunctions. All of this is easy for me to say, of course. I recognise that it is easier to write about government being

Tuscon - A Mexican man was sentenced to 30 years in prison Monday for Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry´s slaying, which led to the unraveling of the failed federal gun-tracking operation known as Fast and Furious. Manuel Osorio-Arellanes, 37, who pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in October 2012 in exchange for avoiding the death penalty, apologized in court. "I regret what happened, sir," Osorio-Arellanes told the judge in Spanish. "I too was hurt. I don´t know what else to say. Please forgive me." He was part of a group of bandits who engaged in a shootout with Terry and three other Border Patrol agents in southern Arizona,

Class back on rise in

LONDON — For the past three decades, many Britons had hoped the rigid class system that defined their country from Dickens to "Downton Abbey" was finally dying. Now they fear that class, their old bugbear, is back on the rise. From 1979, Britain was led for more than a decade by Margaret Thatcher, a grocer´s daughter, and then by John Major, the son of a music-hall entertainer. The current leader, David Cameron, is a descendent of King William IV whose Cabinet is stacked with men, like him, from the country´s toniest private schools and Oxford and Cambridge universities. Of course it´s too early to talk about 2016. Now that we´ve gotten that out of the way... The most interesting dynamic so far is that the Democrats are behaving like Republicans — and vice versa. Since 1940, with the arguable exception of Barry Goldwater, Republicans have nominated the guy next in line. Thomas Dewey almost beat Wendell Willkie for the nomination in 1940, so in 1944 — and 1948 — it was his turn. Dwight Eisenhower, whom both parties wanted as their nominee, was a special case, given that whole invading-Europe-and-defeating-Hitler thing. Richard Nixon was Ike's vice president in 1960, and in 1968

Children with cancer ´denied

EU rules must be changed to allow more testing of potentially life-saving cancer drugs on children, say experts. The UK´s Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) says the current system acts as a disincentive to drug companies who can seek waivers to avoid doing the trials. Of 28 new cancer drugs approved in the EU for adults since 2007, 26 could potentially work in children, but 14 have been exempted from child testing. The ICR wants these "class waivers" to be scrapped. The European Commission is considering whether to change its guidelines.

WASHINGTON — As Hillary Rodham Clinton mulls a second presidential bid, liberals are closely watching whether the onetime supporter of the Iraq war moves to the left or straddles the center. Democrats say economic issues such as raising the minimum wage and protecting Social Security have become paramount for anyone aiming to lead the party after years of tough economic times. During the 2008 primary campaign against Barack Obama, Clinton was hurt by her stand on the Iraq war while she was a senator. But she burnished her image among party loyalists during four years at the State Department in the

More ObamaCare Delays Won’t Save Dems

From its inception, the strategy behind the Obama administration’s implementation of ObamaCare has been simple: to frontload the benefits and postpone the pain and costs of this massive government intrusion into the private sector for as long as possible. This deceitful approach enabled President Obama run for reelection in 2012 on the spurious promise of extending insurance coverage to the poor and those with pre-existing conditions without being held accountable for the problems with the law that would only become apparent in his second term. Over the course of the last year, as the president’s signature accomplishment debuted with a

Late this afternoon, the Obama administration decided to delay for yet another year the health-care mandate that companies provide health insurance to their employees, this time to 2016. “It’s a double whammy here,” Charles Krauthammer said on Special Report tonight. Combining the recent CBO report finding that millions of Americans will choose to work less because of Obamacare and the people who will lose their jobs involuntarily as a result of the mandates, Obamacare is looking like a huge liability come November, Krauthammer explained. “They are getting tremendous complaints from small business that they can’t do this. Mexican vigilante groups have paraded through a stronghold of the Knights Templar drug cartel in the troubled state of Michoacan. The vigilantes had driven into Apatzingan on Saturday, backed by armoured vehicles and troops. On Sunday, they drove round the town shouting slogans before convening at the city´s main square. The groups began an offensive last month aimed at ending the drug gang´s activities in Michoacan. The government recently reached a pact with the groups, granting them temporary legal status by redefining them as Rural Defence Corps. The Knights Templar cartel controls much of the drug trafficking in the area, carrying out killings and kidnappings

The defenestration of Woody Allen started Feb. 2 with a column in the New York Times by Nicholas Kristof. He began by saying all the right things: that allegations against Allen of sexually molesting Dylan Farrow, the 7-year-old daughter of his onetime companion Mia Farrow, had never been proved and that Allen “should be presumed innocent.” Then Kristof threw Allen out the window. Waiting below was a mob of people who felt as Kristof did: There must be something to the allegations. Left unsaid in the Kristof column, but figuring mightily in public opinion, was the perception of Allen as odd,

WASHINGTON — After news broke today that the Obama administration unilaterally decided to delay the health insurance mandate for medium-sized employers until 2016, Rep. Doc Hastings (R-Wash.) tweeted a cartoon of a football refs moving the goalpost farther and farther away from the end zone. “The Obama Administration once again moving the goalposts on #Obamacare,” Hastings tweeted. Beginning next year, businesses that employ 50 to 99 workers will have to report statistics to the government on how many employees are being offered or are receiving health insurance. These employers won’t be assessed penalties on the non-insured until 2016, though. Businesses

Powerful winds in the Pacific Ocean, which have driven surface heat deep underwater, could be the reason behind the current ‘pause’ in global warming. This is according to a joint Australian and U.S. study which has looked at why there has been a slowdown in the planet’s global average surface temperature over the past decade. Their research shows that trade winds in central and eastern parts of the Pacific have caused warm surface water to sink to the ocean´s depths, reducing the amount of heat in the atmosphere. Last year, scientists on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said the pace of

Each passing day is more incriminating for President Obama´s Obamacare, as the news is like a relentless prosecutor amassing evidence against a serial killer. Yet the more evidence that rolls in condemning the president´s "signature achievement" -- wouldn´t you love to have that albatross hung around your epitaph? -- the more entrenched Obama becomes, making clear that his heart is not with the American people or their needs but stubbornly fixated on self. His singular goal is not to provide "affordable health care" but to slay those who are trying to take his "baby" away from him, with the deranged obsession

A Nasa spacecraft orbiting the red planet has found the ´strongest indication´ that liquid water may still exist on the Martian surface. Images taken by Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter reveal ´finger-like´ markings on Martian slopes. Experts say that although they do not yet have a ´smoking gun´, they believe the markings are made by minerals which could not have left without flowing liquid. ´The features are dark, finger-like markings that advance down some Martian slopes when temperatures rise,´ Nasa said. The new clues include corresponding seasonal changes in iron minerals on the same slopes and a survey of ground temperatures and other traits at active

´ObamaCare" is useful shorthand for the Affordable Care Act not least because the law increasingly means whatever President Obama says it does on any given day. His latest lawless rewrite arrived on Monday as the White House decided to delay the law´s employer mandate for another year and in some cases maybe forever. ObamaCare requires businesses with 50 or more workers to offer health insurance to their workers or pay a penalty, but last summer the Treasury offered a year-long delay until 2015 despite having no statutory authorization. Like the individual mandate, the employer decree is central to ObamaCare´s claim of
