Obama´s Boil the Frog
ObamaCare Strategy

Politics: Desperate to keep ObamaCare from hurting Democrats´ chances in the midterm elections this November, the Obama administration is putting off part of the employer mandate for yet another year. On Monday, administration officials said that companies with between 50 and 99 workers won´t have to comply with the mandate until 2016. Those with more than 100 workers will still have to provide "affordable" health benefits to their workers or pay a steep fine. But larger firms will have to cover only 70% of their full-time workers next year to avoid any penalty, and 95% the year after. The Treasury Department claimed

President Barack Obama’s Treasury Department issued a new regulation today that for the second time directly violates the plain and unambiguous text of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act by allowing some businesses to avoid the law’s Dec. 31, 2013 deadline to provide health insurance coverage to their employees. Initially, on July 2, 2013, the administration unilaterally delayed the deadline for the employer mandate until 2015. Now, the administration is unilaterally delaying it for some businesses until 2016. In its official summary of PPACA, the Congressional Research Service said: “(Sec. 1513, as modified by section 10106) Imposes fines on

One of the state’s leading advocates of small government claims she’s the latest victim of a big government nightmare — Obamacare — saying it is forcing her to switch her workers to a more costly health plan that covers pediatric dental care — even though all the employees are senior citizens. “I’m 70, the other two are in their 60s,” said Barbara Anderson, president of Citizens for Limited Taxation. “We do not have family plans. There are no pediatrics involved. There is no reason we should have to offer a pediatric dental plan.” Anderson said her insurer, Harvard Pilgrim Health

Chuck Schumer is the kind of senator who gives used-car salesmen a bad name. My colleague Jerry Kammer used a colloquy between Schumer and Senator Rob Portman last year on the Senate floor to illustrate the two lawmakers’ differing approaches to the immigration issue. Portman, whatever his views on the broader questions of immigration, wanted to make sure any new law would actually work, whereas Schumer’s focus was simply to get a legislative deal completed. He remains proud of his role in putting together the last-minute deal that allowed passage of the 1986 amnesty bill, despite the fact that it

A batch of employers won´t face a fine next year if they fail to provide health insurance to their workers, the Obama administration said Monday. In regulations outlining the Affordable Care Act, the Treasury Department said employers with between 50 and 99 full-time workers won´t have to comply with the law´s requirement to provide insurance or pay a fee until 2016. Companies with 100 workers or more could avoid penalties in 2015 if they showed they were offering coverage to at least 70 percent of their full-time workers, the Treasury said. The move is a new, significant revision of the law after

On Monday, a liberal group gleefully announced Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker had been caught in a lie. “Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has claimed he voted for Ronald Reagan when he ‘had just become a teenager,’” wrote Brad Woodhouse of American Bridge in an email. ”Given that Walker was just 17 years old on Election Day in 1984, that claim is just not possible.” Outlets like Salon, Gawker, and the Huffington Post had also seized on the story. But according to John Hawkins, the blogger who conducted the original interview, Walker never said he voted for Reagan. The mix-up was a result

Iran’s nuclear chief declared that his country has developed a new generation of centrifuges 15 times more powerful than those currently being used to enrich uranium, and said it might resume enrichment to 60% if necessary. “We unveiled a new generation of centrifuges that surprised the Westerners,” said Ali Akbar Salehi on Monday. “This new machine is 15 times more powerful than the previous generation,” he claimed, according to Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB. Salehi added that the development did not violate the November 24 Geneva interim agreement between Iran and six world powers that has imposed curbs on Tehran’s nuclear drive.

With no prospects for a successful legislative agenda in Congress and even his talk of governing by executive order not impressing either friends or foes, President Obama seems to be drifting inexorably toward lame-duck status. But there is no better indication of just how politically toxic Obama has become than the rumblings that came out of last week’s meeting between the president and Senate Democrats. As Politico reports, the White House has agreed to stay out of most of the key races that will decide whether Democrats retain control of the Senate this year. Given the fact that his poll

The verdict is in, and it’s not good: Obamacare is rippling through the U.S. economy with vast implications for American prosperity. On Friday, we learned that the Obama economy has hit stall speed, with a paltry 113,000 jobs added in January. Two days earlier, we learned the president’s health care law is discouraging Americans from working, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. The report makes for bracing reading. The law will reduce the labor supply by the equivalent of 2.3 million full-time workers, the CBO says — up from an estimated 800,000 just three years ago.

We may soon get an answer. Lyle Denniston, writing for the Constitution Daily, reports about two gun rights cases that may get a hearing before the U.S. Supreme Court. Both cases, dealing with restrictions on the ability of minors to possess weapons in public, hinge on the difference between the right to “keep” a gun and a right “bear” one. The Obama administration announced Monday it would give medium-sized employers an extra year, until 2016, before they must offer health insurance to their full-time workers. Firms with at least 100 employees will have to start offering this coverage in 2015. By offering an unexpected grace period to businesses with between 50 and 99 employees, administration officials are hoping to defuse another potential controversy involving the 2010 health-care law, which has become central to Republicans’ campaign to make political gains in this year’s midterm election. Even the nation’s largest employers got a significant concession:

House Speaker John Boehner said something noteworthy at the recent House Republican retreat on Maryland’s Eastern Shore: “It’s important that we show the American people we’re not just the opposition party, we’re actually the alternative party.” To be sure, there’s nothing wrong with opposing; the phrase “loyal opposition” boasts a distinguished lineage in English parliamentary history, as well as American congressional history. However, opposing only gets you half the way there; blocking the other side’s forward motion is not the same as making forward motion yourself. So yes, opposing is fine—but winning is better.
