NEW YORK - In a major drug bust that drew little attention just a week before Philip Seymour Hoffman´s death, authorities found a sophisticated heroin packaging and distribution operation in an apartment in the Bronx. (Snip) The pipeline starts in Mexico, where cartels traffic Colombian-produced heroin by the kilogram. The wholesalers smuggle the drugs into the United States concealed in trucks, through tunnels dug under the southwest border and, in one recent case, by molding and coloring the heroin to look like coffee beans and shipping it via UPS to a private postal box in Queens. ELKO, Nevada—Rodeo poet Paul Zarzyski can’t help grinning when he thinks of the National Poetry Gathering’s early days. In the late 1980s, the Elko Convention Center auditorium was filled to ranch folks on holiday and most of the cowboy poets were just off the range. Now finishing its 30th year, the poetry gathering has gained national prominence and a certain cache. It still draws its share of working buckaroos and ranch bosses, but take a seat at bars inside the Star Hotel Basque restaurant, the Pioneer Saloon or the venerable Stockman’s, and you’re as likely to strike up a conversation with

Dylan Farrow Responds to Woody Allen:

Dylan Farrow has responded to an op-ed Woody Allen published by The New York Times Friday. In the response, provided to The Hollywood Reporter, Farrow denounced Allen´s op-ed -- in which he suggested Farrow´s mother, Mia Farrow, had coached her to accuse Allen of sexually assaulting her as a child. "I have never wavered in describing what he did to me. I will carry the memories of surviving these experiences for the rest of my life," Farrow said. She went on to challenge other points in Allen´s op-ed, calling it ´the latest rehash of the same legalese, distortions, and outright lies he

Why should we trust Barack

President Obama has been quite up-front about it: he refuses to enforce laws he dislikes and unilaterally changes others without the consent of Congress. The Supreme Court may soon have to decide the constitutionality of all this but, in the meantime, many are wondering why Congress would believe they can trust the president to work with them in good faith on any issue. Still more are scratching their heads over the notion that now, when Obamacare is hurting millions and the economy is still sputtering, Congress should put off dealing with those problems and, instead, work with Mr. Obama on

WASHINGTON- In a new milestone for gay rights, Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. will issue a directive Monday expanding government recognition of same-sex marriages to all federal courtrooms and prisons, and some federal benefits programs. The new policy, which Holder plans to announce Saturday night at a gay rights dinner in New York City, means the Justice Department will not object if gay or lesbian partners refuse to testify against their spouses in federal criminal and civil cases, and will push for them to be accorded the same rights in Bankruptcy court as other married couples. USDA Considering New Zoo

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is considering adopting new regulations for zoos at the request of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) that would require “humane” treatment for bears. The proposed rules would mandate the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to hire a “bear expert,” prohibit bear pits, and require rules so bears are not “stressed, frustrated, and bored.” PETA, which killed 1,792 stray cats and dogs in 2013, first petitioned the USDA to adopt its rules in 2012. One of Alex Rodriguez´s lawyers has sued the New York Daily News, two of its reporters and former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik for defamation. Joseph Tacopina said in a complaint filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan that reporters Nathaniel Vinton and Michael O´Keefe "engineered" the filing of a disciplinary complaint by Kerik "so that they could publish a negative article about Tacopina" in December. The complaint said the reporters hoped to discredit Tacopina after he was retained by Rodriguez and called it "a conspiracy between two unethical newspaper reporters ... and a convicted felon and liar." ABC´s Nightline threw a gratuitous punch at Sarah Palin in a story that had nothing to do with politics, either left or right. Rather, it was an investigation of violence into kids´ little league sports and the regrettable, all too common, angry attitudes of coaches and parents. For the late night news show, ABC´s David Wright showed the audience videos of coaches encouraging kids to hit opposing teams in the head. He then showed a clip of the Will Ferrell kids´ sports comedy, Kicking and Screaming, then oddly segued to a clip of Sarah Palin. Referring to the film of

Many were upset, for example, that the network cut out the performance by pop group t.A.T.u. from its broadcast of the Olympics opening ceremony. But there was one edit from the opening ceremony that seemed particularly strange. The network cut out a part from International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach’s speech that talked against discrimination. Deadspin caught the fact that NBC left out a key part of Bach’s statements from the broadcast, a surprising edit considering how much

The latest round of the IRS scandal, in which Tea Party and conservative groups have been selectively targeted for harassment by our tax collection agency, is now unfolding. This comes in the form of proposed new rules from the IRS regarding the operation of organizations falling under the 501(c)(4) provision of the tax code. These are organizations whose purpose is to promote “social welfare” and therefore their income is tax-free. Because promoting a cause or agenda in our free and democratic country cannot be isolated from political activity associated with that agenda, such activity is permitted by 501(c)(4) organizations, as

Dozens of American sailors who assisted Japan during the 2011 nuclear disaster are suing the operators of Fukushima power plant for more than £612 million (US$1bn) in damages, claiming that they have become sick from radiation exposure. The sailors were on board the USS Ronald Reagan super-carrier when it was diverted to northeast Japan following the devastation of the March 11, 2011 earthquake which triggered a tsunami and subsequent nuclear disaster. As they helped rescue victims and evacuate disaster zones, the claimants allege that they drank, bathed and waded through water contaminated with radiation from the damaged nuclear power plant

Professor John McWhorter claims removing commas from most modern U.S. texts would cause ´little loss of clarity´ - meaning they may now be in a state of obsolescence. He adds that internet users are becoming increasingly carefree in their use of the punctuation mark - with some professional writers following suit, according to The Times. ´[You] could take them out of a great deal of modern American

It is very dramatic.´ Women and children are among those left inside the ´hugely precarious´ wreckage, said a spokesman.

SOCHI, Russia -- IOC President Thomas Bach took a shot at former President George Bush for breaking the traditional protocol at the opening ceremony of the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City. Bach was asked at a news conference whether Russian President Vladimir Putin might use Friday night´s opening ceremony in Sochi as political propaganda. Bach said, under the Olympic Charter, heads of state speak only one sentence, declaring the games open. Bach said all leaders have kept to the script -- "except for one who violated the charter in Salt Lake City in 2002." The Salt Lake Games were

He did not mention specific municipalities from any of the states. Rosenberg noted in the suit that Redflex “bestowed gifts and bribes on ... officials in dozens of municipalities within, but

This week, a report from the Congressional Budget Office acknowledged that ObamaCare would reduce full-time employment by 2.5 million over the next ten years. And that is on top of news that 92 million Americans who could be working are not. What a devastating assessment for the unemployed or underemployed, particular millenials seeking to transition from internships and part-time jobs to career-building full-time jobs. Yet the predictable spin from the White House and major media outlets is that this is good news, liberating workers from the chains of employment. Nothing builds the Democrats´ voter base faster than the widespread ability to raid other taxpayers for support. How widespread? "Almost everyone is eligible for some form of financial aid, and all you have to do to access that aid is fill out this one little form. It´s so simple." Simple, as in one-stop shopping, all the better to build that constituency for OPM (other people´s money).
