Great Lakes ice cover spreading

Ice continued to build this past week on the Great Lakes due to the cold air and temperatures staying below freezing, and Lake Superior´s new record shows it. The lake is 92 percent frozen, toppling a 20-year-old record of 91 percent set on Feb. 5, 1994. That statistic helped total Great Lakes ice cover soar, and we can expect to see more form in coming days. The air temperatures this past week averaged around five degrees below normal for the Great Lakes area. This amount of deviation from normal means it was a fairly cold week. As of February 5,

NBC whitewashed Russia´s communist legacy in the lead segment of its Friday broadcast of the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage narrated the network´s lionization of the largest country by land mass: "Russia overwhelms. Russia mystifies. Russia transcends. Through every stage of its story, it´s resisted any notion of limitation. Through every re-invention, only redoubling its desire to cast a towering presence." However, Dinklage continued with a glorification of the Marxist-Leninist totalitarian state that slaughtered tens of millions of people between 1917 and 1991:

EPA set to strike key

Stymied by the GOP´s long resistance to cap and trade legislation, the EPA this week began public hearings -- the next step toward a final rule -- to cut carbon dioxide emissions from new coal plants. The rule would limit emissions to 1100 pounds per Megawatt hour, a level the coal industry says is technologically unattainable. Green energy proponents disagree. "Opponents say this will prevent ever building another coal-fired plant in the United States today. They say that the technology is not commercially available. These claims are scare tactics," Rep. HenryWaxman, D-Calif., said in a press conference Thursday outside EPA headquarters in advance

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The warm-up act for President Obama’s speech here Friday featured a four-piece jazz band playing in front of a John Deere tractor. Obama’s quest to bring together two other disparate elements — Democrats and Republicans — was not as successful. The president traveled to this middle-American college town to tout the passage of a $1 trillion farm bill this week, a rare bipartisan achievement by Congress that the president was eager to highlight. Six congressional Democrats flew aboard Air Force One — but none of the two dozen Republicans invited by Obama showed up. House Agriculture

Barack Obama, the first president shaped by the celebratory culture in which every child who plays soccer gets a trophy and the first whose campaign speeches were his qualification for the office, perhaps should not be blamed for thinking that saying things is tantamount to accomplishing things, and that good intentions are good deeds. So, his presidency is useful after all, because it illustrates the perils of government run by believers in magic words and numbers. The last progressive president promised Model Cities, with every child enjoying a Head Start en route to enjoying an Upward Bound into a Great

It should have been a glorious week for AOL chief executive Tim Armstrong. His company’s quarterly earnings, announced Thursday, were the best in a decade. “Olympian,” he declared. Instead, he angered employees, insulted parents with sick babies and shined a light on a practice seeping its way into corporate America that threatens to rob workers of thousands of dollars in 401(k) savings. The strange turn of events began Tuesday, when employees began learning that AOL was switching its 401(k) match to an annual lump sum, rather than distributing the money throughout the year with every paycheck as it had done

Paterson – City officials are planning to borrow $1.65 million to pay nine firefighters and eight police officers for unused leave days when they retire. This would represent the fourth consecutive year in which Paterson has borrowed money to pay severance to retiring firefighters and police officers at a total cost of more than $11 million over that time. “The budget can’t support this, so you have to borrow it, which means your children end up paying for it eventually,” said Council Finance Chairman Kenneth Morris. “Paterson needs to do a better job managing these costs,” said Councilman William McKoy.

Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich, in his most extensive comments yet, said Governor Christie’s aides courted him for over two years with gifts from the Port Authority to his town — like shuttle buses, pothole repair and emergency radios — as well as a personal tours of the 9/11 Memorial in a effort to win his endorsement. But when Sokolich did not volunteer his support, he says he was punished by paralyzing traffic jams on Fort Lee’s streets leading to the George Washington Bridge that were ordered by Christie’s appointees at the Port Authority during portions of five days last September.

TWENTY-ONE years ago, when I first heard Mia Farrow had accused me of child molestation, I found the idea so ludicrous I didn’t give it a second thought. We were involved in a terribly acrimonious breakup, with great enmity between us and a custody battle slowly gathering energy. The self-serving transparency of her malevolence seemed so obvious I didn’t even hire a lawyer to defend myself. It was my show business attorney who told me she was bringing the accusation to the police and I would need a criminal lawyer. I naïvely thought the accusation would be dismissed out of hand because of course, I hadn’t molested Dylan

Little says the senator is in Wichita today and goes back to the state whenever he can, and that the Times piece is a hit job. The brother of movie star Mia Farrow will spend the next 10 years in prison for sexually abusing two boys in Maryland. John Charles Villiers-Farrow, 67, was sentenced Monday to 25 years in prison, with 15 years suspended. Villiers-Farrow entered an Alford plea in July to two counts of child abuse in the molestation of two 10-year-old boys who were his neighbors in Anne Arundel County, Md., in 2002. He had faced 39 counts. Authorities say he abused one victim for seven years, beginning when the boy was nine, and abused another boy from the ages of 8 to 13. An Alford plea means the suspect does not admit guilt,

Geraldo Rivera took on Bill O’Reilly Friday night over whether O’Reilly was disrespectful to President Obama in their big Super Bowl interview. Rivera gave O’Reilly some benefit of the doubt, but other than that thought O’Reilly was a bit too confrontational and didn’t give Obama the kind of respect a president normally deserves. Rivera argued it was less like an interview and more like a meeting of the minds with the “President of Most of the White Guys of America” (O’Reilly) against the president of the rest of the country, and told O’Reilly that it was out of line for him

So let me get this right. Team Obama taxes millionaires who create jobs, while ObamaCare creates incentives not to work at those jobs. No wonder recovery´s so anemic. The policy here is to create fewer jobs and induce people to work less at those jobs. If my logic is correct, this runs counter to the basic principles of our economy and our country. I thought the American Idea had something to do with work, family and opportunity. But what I see from the Obama administration is policies that undermine these virtues. Here´s a contrasting vision. President Obama on Friday signed a five-year farm bill into law, marking the hard-fought legislative accomplishment with eight Democratic members of Congress by his side. Before signing the bill before a crowd of about 500 at Michigan State University, Mr. Obama said the bill “doesn´t include everything I´d like to see,” but is “a good sign” for bipartisan progress in Congress. The number of lawmakers not present for the signing, however, suggests the bill’s success hasn’t built much bipartisan good will. About 50 lawmakers, including many Republicans, were invited to attend the bill signing, White House spokesman Jay Carney told

The federal government pays for a $15 million ´wool trust fund,´ runs a $170 million program to protect catfish growers from overseas competition, sets aside $3 million to promote Christmas trees, funds another $2 million to help farmers sell more sheep, and plunks down $100 million researching how to get Americans to buy more maple syrup. And that spending is just three one-hundredths of one per cent of the Farm Bill that President Barack Obama signed Friday in Michigan. Liberal and conservative watchdogs alike are hopping mad at what they say are pork-barrel projects included in the five-year agriculture spending

We can’t afford to lose any more jobs. These numbers are calculated according to how many work hours the CBO estimates will be lost in the coming decade. Reuters reports, “In its latest U.S. fiscal outlook, the nonpartisan CBO said the health law would lead some workers, particularly those with lower incomes, to limit their hours to avoid losing federal subsidies that Obamacare provides to help pay for health insurance

Foreign Policy: President Obama´s "smart" diplomacy was supposed to bring the world back to our side after eight years of George W. Bush´s cowboy diplomacy. Instead, it has brought ineptitude and cronyism. ´America is back," the president crowed in his 2012 State of the Union speech. Based on what he had gleaned from world leaders, "opinions of America are higher than they´ve been in years." Two years later, such braggadocio sounds ridiculous. Indeed, the State Department under Obama is turning into a global laughingstock as he puts forward a series of incompetent political cronies for key diplomatic posts, showing disrespect for allies

The owners of Leviathan were in Australia this week to try to finalize a year-old non-binding deal, worth up to $2.3 billion, The Australian daily reported. Woodside will pay more than it had originally offered to enter the gas field because its owners want to pipe much of the gas to Turkey and other regional countries. Pipeline exports to Turkey require less development spending, which would increase the value of the gasfield.
