Is this the best the Establishment has got on Chris McDaniel? A super PAC associated with former Mississippi Gov. and current lobbyist Haley Barbour has resorted to attacking McDaniel for voting for bills that Barbour supported and signed into law. And in one instance, the group accuses McDaniel of voting for a bill he didn´t vote for. Barbour, incidentally, also signed that one into law. McDaniel has secured endorsements from the conservative groups like the Club for Growth, the Senate Conservatives Fund, Heritage Action, and Freedomworks. The Washington establishment appears to be deeply concerned that Cochran is in trouble before

New World Trade Center design

Falling ice from One World Trade Center led to the closure of nearby streets, the PATH station and a memorial pool Friday morning. Port Authority workers closed the main entrance to the World Trade Center station about 8:45 a.m. after ice began plummeting more than 1000 feet off the nearly-completed building, officials said. Service to Newark and Hoboken was suspended. The tower´s distinctive design made matters worse, witnesses said. The building’s sloping corners functioned like a ski jump for falling ice. "The ice just comes down the side and shoots off," said one PATH worker, who declined to give his

The White House doesn´t like it, and neither does a prominent Senate Republican, but Olympic athletes who win medals in Sochi will have to pay federal income taxes on their cash bonuses. The U.S. Olympic Committee awards $25,000 for each gold medal, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze. But top athletes who are in the top income tax bracket , 39.6 per cent, will have to fork over as much as $9,900 of a gold medal payout. [Snip] The could drive the total federal tax liability for a gold medal winner north of $10,000.

Philip Seymour Hoffman’s death points
to broader opioid drug epidemic
Washington Post, by Joel Achenbach    Original Article
Posted By: FlyRight- 2/7/2014 2:00:46 PM     Post Reply
The death last Sunday of Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman at age 46 focused media attention on the nationwide surge in heroin use and overdoses. But the very real heroin epidemic is framed by an even more dramatic increase since the beginning of the century in overdoses from pharmaceutical drugs known as opioids. These are, in effect, tandem epidemics — an addiction crisis driven by the powerful effects on the human brain of drugs derived from morphine.Further tests are pending to determine the precise cause of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman’s death.

Rand Paul demands Dems return money

Sen. Rand Paul, who has been in a bit of a tiff recently with the Clintons, says that any Democrat who has raised campaign money with former President Clinton should return the cash to protest his sexual behavior in the White House. Speaking on C-Span’s “Newsmakers” program, in an interview airing Sunday, Mr. Paul said Democrats are being hypocritical by criticizing Republicans as waging a war on women while at the same time embracing Mr. Clinton, who was impeached for lying about a sexual relationship with a White House intern.

It’s time to leave Woody Allen alone. “What is your favorite Woody Allen movie?’’ This was the pointed question — fighting words, really — that kicked off an open letter written by the adopted daughter of the iconic New York City filmmaker and posted last weekend on a New York Times blog. Dylan Farrow, who now lives under another name, wrote that one day in 1992, Woody, a self-described claustrophobe, led her to a cramped attic in the Connecticut summer house owned by her mother, Mia Farrow, and told her to lie on her stomach and play with her brother’s electric train

Vice President Joe Biden said in an interview with CNN´s Kate Bolduan that he can´t formulate a "good" reason not to run for president in 2016. "There may be reasons I don´t run, but there´s no obvious reason for me why I think I should not run," Biden said in the interview, which aired Friday morning on CNN´s "New Day." Biden said, realistically, that a decision on his potential 2016 run would come next summer. One reason he might not run is the sizable polling gulf already between him and Democrats´ most logical candidate — former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. According to

Appearing on America’s Newsroom this morning, Juan Williams suggested it was fair of President Obama to criticize Fox News for its coverage of the 2012 Benghazi terrorist attack. Asked by host Gregg Jarrett to address the president’s declining to label Benghazi an “an act of terror” immediately following the siege, Williams responded that “At this point, it’s a political football… that I think people are keeping alike to hector Hillary Clinton.” Later on, Jarrett asked whether it was “undignified” and “embarrassing” of the president, during his pre-Super Bowl interview with Bill O’Reilly, to “blame the the Fox News Channel for the Benghazi

SOCHI, Russia – From the gently rolling Black Sea to the jagged Caucasus Mountains, from gleaming modern stadiums to colorfully ancient Matryoshka dolls, the Sochi Olympics open Friday with every conceivable natural wonder except one. There is a visible lack of joy. The strong-armed dream of Russian President Vladimir Putin has thus far succeeded not in embellishing the Olympic motto, but altering it, from ´´swifter, higher, stronger´´ to, "unfinished, unsettling and uninviting.´´ Along the cramped streets in the Adler neighborhood above Olympic Park, the locals keep their heads down and their expressions grim as they walk through a shopping district

WASHINGTON — National Journal’s annual rankings are out today and it turns out that Sen. John Cornyn ranks as more conservative among senators than Rep. Steve Stockman ranks in the House. Stockman, R-Clear Lake, one of seven challengers in the March 4 Senate primary, has tried to paint Cornyn as a liberal. Cornyn ranked 14th most conservative in the 100-person Senate. Stockman ranked 138th most conservative among 435 House members — behind all but two of the 24 Texas Republicans, in fact, and about in the middle of all House Republicans. Freshman Sen. Ted Cruz came out near the top of the Senate

The U.S. economy has averaged about 2.5% growth for four and a half years in what is supposedly a recovery, median household income is below where it was when the recession ended in June 2009, and job growth is mediocre. But the political class seems intent on fighting over the blame rather than trying to escape the malaise. The latest evidence is John Boehner´s punt on immigration reform. Only days ago the House Speaker floated a set of reform principles that opened the door to a potential compromise with Democrats and the Senate. But the response from the anti-reform right was

A defiant father is refusing to leave the £1million house he built himself despite being completely surrounded by fields of muddy floodwater on the Somerset Levels. Builder Sam Notaro, 40, has kept the house in Moorland safe from the rising floodwater by building his own flood defences which consist of a five-foot deep moat around his house, brick waterproofing and a pump system. He insisted his partner and their two young children left in case the defences breached, but Sam refused to evacuate despite the impending storm and inevitable deluge. Bangui (Central African Republic) (AFP) - A mob lynched a Muslim on Friday after he fell off a crowded lorry driving thousands of frightened civilians out of the strife-torn capital of the Central African Republic. A large convoy of lorries and taxis packed with Muslims fleeing Christian vigilantes headed north from Bangui under a slew of insults from angry residents, locals said. The mob set on the victim after he fell off one of the lorries and hacked to pieces his body, which still lay by the side of the road by late morning, an AFP photographer saw.

Here´s a story that goes under the category of the absurd. Beer Belly´s Bar on Van Born Road in Taylor has a sign posted outside that says "NO COLORS ALLOWED." Most people know what that means: No gang colors, and in this case, motor cycle gangs. But apparently somebody didn´t get it and and circulated a Facebook video suggesting it meant no "colored" or black customers, a throwback to the days of the South when some restaurants and businesses posted the sign "No Colored Allowed." Fox 2 reports that the video has prompted people to call the bar and threaten the help.

Megyn Kelly practically burst at Democratic congressman Adam Schiff on Thursday over his non-answers to her repeated questions on the Benghazi attacks. Kelly said there’s still plenty the American people don’t know, while Schiff dismissed the “conspiracy theory” there was a cover-up of any kind. Kelly called out President Obama for saying in his Super Bowl interview with Bill O’Reilly that Benghazi security was lax and that he called it a terrorist attack a week after it happened. On that latter part, Kelly brought up Obama’s appearance on The View as evidence he did not. Schiff contended that Obama calling it

NBC Sports anchor Bob Costas opened the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia with a short profile of the country’s president, Vladimir Putin. Airing on NBC, the profile package portrayed Putin as a statesman and an accomplished peacemaker, crediting him for preventing an American airstrike on Syria and for coaxing the Iranian government to the nuclear negotiating table. The profile also framed Putin as President Barack Obama’s superior in terms of global statesmanship. “Just in the past year, Putin brokered a deal to allow Syria to avoid a U.S. military strike by giving up its chemical weapons,” Costas said in a

A group of House conservatives have introduced legislation to require that people using food stamps show a photo ID whenever using them. The bill, introduced by Rep. Matt Salmon (R-Ariz.), would “amend the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 to require households that receive supplemental nutrition assistance benefits to present photographic verification at the time food is purchased with such benefits.” In the recently passed farm bill, the SNAP program was reauthorized at $80 billion per year. A recent Government Accountability Office report detailed fraud in the system to the tune of $2.2 billion paid in error during 2009 alone. “The SNAP program exists

Journalists love to preen as human rights watchdogs, congratulating themselves publicly for their roles – real or imagined – in securing the life and liberty of the downtrodden. That is, as long as it’s the right sort of downtrodden. Take, for example, NBC’s coverage in the run up to the Sochi Winter Olympics. Because of Russian restrictions on gays’ free speechfor homosexuals, the official Olympic network repeatedly fretted about gay “human rights.” NBC speculated about the rights and safety of gay athletes and visitors to Sochi, reported extensively on Russia’s gay community, talked to every gay athlete in the NBC

The White House designated a Taliban ally as a terrorist organization in 2012. Seventeen months later, though, none of the network’s assets have been frozen or blocked. In the last 17 months since the U.S. government financially blacklisted the Haqqani Network, one of the deadliest insurgent groups in Afghanistan and Pakistan, not a single dollar associated with the group has been blocked or frozen, according to U.S. officials and one of the Congressman who oversees the Treasury Department’s financial war on terrorism. US S Secretary of State John Kerry may feel heartfelt concern about the growing campaign to delegitimize Israel and to boycott it. One of the least smart and least constructive ways to tackle the danger, however, is by issuing an anguished public prediction that this is what awaits Israel if his peace effort fails. But then the indefatigable secretary has consistently displayed a grievous absence of smarts when it comes to Israel, and the wider Middle East. It remains inexplicable how Kerry, on taking office, could decide that he was capable of bridging the gulfs between a weak-willed Palestinian Authority President
