Russian Village Used, Abused,

ASHTYR, Russia -- If any one place embodies the allegations of corruption, abuse, and alarming human cost of the Sochi Olympics, it´s here. Ashtyr, a tiny, impoverished village in the foothills between the coastal and mountain parks where the upcoming Winter Games will be held, has been used by Olympic planners for its limestone deposits, suffered from the effects of nearby construction, and had its pleas for help ignored. The benefits of the more than $51 billion spent on the Olympics and related infrastructure investments are nowhere to be seen here. Now, after years of exploitation and protests, it´s eerily quiet here. Just

Barack Obama´s ´hard-working American´

President Barack Obama´s political action group, Organizing for Action, is out with a new advert urging Congress to raise the national minimum wage for millions of low-paid Americans. Set to rising music, the 30-second commercial features a medley of images of hard-working Americans going about their day. There´s only one problem: one of those "hard-working Americans" is in fact a London Overground commuter. A woman featured in the advert´s opening seconds is riding aboard the London train system as she looks wistfully out the window and clutches a coffee cup.

President Obama to Democrats:

President Barack Obama rallied Senate Democrats behind his election-year agenda on Wednesday, even privately urging senators to “keep your powder dry” on his push to expand international trade despite the strong opposition from many leading Democrats, according to several people at the closed-door session. At a roughly two-hour meeting at Nationals Park, Obama repeatedly emphasized his goal to keep the Senate in Democratic control in the 2014 midterms, promising to do whatever he can to help his party stay in the majority, attendees said. He noted that his agenda stands a better chance of advancing if a majority of the

How did Americans manage to lose

The gambling industry around the world is huge, but the biggest market is the United States, where gamblers lost a staggering $119 billion in 2013:(Snip for chart)That´s a crazy amount of money; more money than Bill Gates has (with $72 billion) or Warren Buffett (with $58 billion), and only $11 billion less than the two men put together. What intrigues me is the question of why so many people gamble. After all, everyone knows that the odds are stacked against gamblers, whether they´re betting on slot machines, horse racing, football, roulette, bingo, or lotteries. Even the games where it is possible

John Kerry’s bungled threat to Israel

This week, as John Kerry marks a year at the helm of the State Department, almost everyone in the Mideast is angry at him, while much of Washington is puzzled. The Americans are trying to make sense of the secretary of state’s reported belief that President Obama needs a new Syria policy because the current one has failed. Isn’t it Kerry’s job to produce that policy? But first let’s handle the anger, which mostly turns on Kerry’s nonstop push for an Israel-Palestine accord. Kerry sees this as so crucial that he’s visited the area more than any other spot and created the

America long ago lost her will to live. Historically, trespassing into another people´s territory could bring violence. And nations the world over secure their borders, sometimes at the end of a gun fondled by an itchy finger. But not the US. We place water stations in the Arizona desert for thirsty trespassers, offer driver´s licenses and in-state tuition for them, and now a Supreme Court justice has opined that calling illegal migrants "criminals" is insulting. I don´t know, what do you call someone who broke the law? "Legally challenged"? But it´s even worse than that. About 20 years ago Japan

News that Obamacare would cause the economy to shed 2.3 million jobs is being greeted with jubilation by some quarters. This was foreseen long ago. FactCheck.Org pointed out even in 2011 that unemployment is not the right word for the loss of remunerative activities caused by the program. The word’s not “unemployment”. “That’s a distortion. CBO said some Americans would work less or leave their jobs if they can get health insurance outside the workplace.” It’s not a bug. It’s a feature. Employment is a prison, didn’t you know? Nancy Pelosi exults that breadwinners now can escape the confines of “job-lock”.

WASHINGTON— Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel wants military leaders to inject more urgency into ensuring "moral character and moral courage" in a force suffering a rash of ethical lapses. Hagel has been worried by a string of scandals that has produced a wave of unwelcome publicity for the military. But in light of new disclosures this week, including the announcement of alleged cheating among senior sailors in the nuclear Navy, Hagel on Wednesday demanded a fuller accounting of the depth of the problem. Last month the Air Force revealed it was investigating widespread cheating on proficiency tests among nuclear missile launch

Famed 18th century translator Samuel Croxall offered this warning on the dangers of political alarmism, as illustrated in Aesop’s “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”: “When we are alarmed with imaginary dangers in respect of the public, till the cry grows quite stale and threadbare, how can it be expected we should know when to guard ourselves against real ones?” With every over-hyped, over-reaching, over-zealous allegation against New Jersey Gov. Los Angeles -- Octuplets mom Nadya Suleman faces a new criminal charge of welfare fraud, bringing the number of counts against her to four. Prosecutors accuse Suleman, whose claim to fame is giving birth to eight babies in one day, of not reporting that she was making thousands of dollars as topless dancer and adult film actress when she applied for government aid last year. An additional charge filed Wednesday alleges that she received nearly $10,000 in MediCal benefits she was not entitled to, the Los Angeles County district attorney´s office said. The restitution they are seeking now totals $26,000. Suleman has already

The spin machine sprang into action in the wake of the Congressional Budget Office’s new report on the economy and ObamaCare. While the White House (and their press agents at the New York Times who ran the headline “Freeing Workers from the Insurance Trap” and described the law’s “liberating” impact) tried to portray projections of job losses stemming from ObamaCare as good news for those lucky people who will no longer have to put up with the drudgery of – for example, working – to win health care insurance, the GOP saw it otherwise, and rightly so. Critics charged that the law’s

PHILADELPHIA -- Dave Dixon and his wife are bunking with friends after losing power in a snow-and-ice storm that caused more than a million U.S. outages - the vast majority of them in a single state, Pennsylvania. The storm has long since cleared out, but its effects are expected to linger for days as utility crews work feverishly to restore power to hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvania residents left in the dark and cold. One official likened the damage to what you´d expect to see from a hurricane. "People are going to have to have some patience at this point," Pennsylvania Gov.

At least 70 percent of asylum applications showed signs of fraud, according to a secret 2009 internal government audit that found many of those cases had been approved anyway. The 2009 fraud assessment, obtained by the House Judiciary Committee and reviewed by The Washington Times, suggests a system open to abuse and exploitation at a time when the number of people applying for asylum in the U.S. has skyrocketed, particularly along the southwestern border. Another report obtained by the committee suggests that the government isn’t detaining most of those who apply for asylum, including those awaiting a final judgment.

Barack Obama was once a constitutional law professor, but now views the founding document as irrelevant. The president is ruling by decree, instead of working with a divided Congress. The Founding Fathers would be appalled by the way the current occupant of the White House has usurped power to get his agenda passed. There is nothing to restrain Mr. Obama, now a lame duck, from forcing his liberalism on America. For example, the White House declared Wednesday that it will not go through Congress to create regional “climate hubs” to deal with the supposed crisis of “climate change.” This comes

AS celebrity gossip goes, it takes some beating: actress and model Elizabeth Hurley has a year-long affair with Bill Clinton while he was US president. Throw in the suggestion that they had a liaison in the White House while Hillary Clinton was next door, and that Mr Clinton ended it when he realised he was falling in love, and you have a story that rivals Marilyn Monroe´s alleged fling with John F Kennedy. But when something sounds too good to be true, it usually is, as Ms Hurley pointed out yesterday when she was forced to deny the "ludicrously silly" report

The White House and congressional Democrats tried to limit the fallout Wednesday from the politically damaging conclusion in a Congressional Budget Office report that the Obamacare entitlement creates a major incentive for some people not to work. While some critics focused on a finding by the CBO that Obamacare will result in 2.5 million fewer workers over a decade, conservatives said the bigger fundamental issue highlighted in the report is one familiar to the welfare state — that taxpayer-funded government subsidies provide disincentives for full-time work. “People used to be stuck in jobs because they needed the health insurance,” said

The Virginia legislature years ago banned governors from donating excess inauguration funds to political causes, but that hasn’t stopped Gov. Terry McAuliffe from finding a way to route $211,000 from his inaugural fund back to his election campaign and the Virginia Democratic Party, disclosure records show. Mr. McAuliffe’s aides say the two $78,000 checks his inaugural committee sent to his campaign committee along with a $55,000 check to the state Democratic Party were expenditures for the rental of email lists. But campaign finance analysts told The Washington Times that the costs of the email rentals appeared to be exorbitant, and

Between 1 million and 2 million Americans signed up for Medicaid last year because of the health-care law, according to a new report suggesting that many of the people who have joined the program since the initiative’s rollout in October would have done so absent the law. The Obama administration has said that 6.3 million people were determined to be eligible for Medicaid between October and December. But the study, from health-care industry consulting firm Avalere Health, suggests that only a fraction of the enrollments are strictly the result of the health-care law. The study is the latest effort by

Besides, said Carney, Obama’s statement is reasonable.

Vilsack spoke at the White House as the Obama administration announced it is creating seven regional hubs to help coordinate and distribute information about the effects of climate change. The hubs will be based at Agriculture Department facilities. They’ll assess local climate risks, such as

She makes a good case that the argument she´s rebutting is fallacious, then concludes by committing the same fallacy in reverse. "Economists have done studies showing that if you snapped your fingers and suddenly all the country´s poor, unmarried partners were hitched . . . the poverty rate would drop," a catchy if imprecise way of saying that there is a strong correlation

The day produced more evidence blowing apart President Obama´s claims that there was "not even a smidgen of corruption" or political motivation in the IRS handling of groups applying for tax-exempt status. Mr. Obama wants Americans to believe that the targeting resulted from the confusing tax law governing nonprofits, which he says was "difficult" to interpret and resulted in mere "bureaucratic" mistakes. This is also the Administration´s justification for issuing new regulations governing
