Audit finds asylum
system rife with fraud
Washington Times, by Stephen Dinan    Original Article

At least 70 percent of asylum applications showed signs of fraud, according to a secret 2009 internal government audit that found many of those cases had been approved anyway. The 2009 fraud assessment, obtained by the House Judiciary Committee and reviewed by The Washington Times, suggests a system open to abuse and exploitation at a time when the number of people applying for asylum in the U.S. has skyrocketed, particularly along the southwestern border. Another report obtained by the committee suggests that the government isn’t detaining most of those who apply for asylum, including those awaiting a final judgment.

Tyrant Obama will force

Barack Obama was once a constitutional law professor, but now views the founding document as irrelevant. The president is ruling by decree, instead of working with a divided Congress. The Founding Fathers would be appalled by the way the current occupant of the White House has usurped power to get his agenda passed. There is nothing to restrain Mr. Obama, now a lame duck, from forcing his liberalism on America. For example, the White House declared Wednesday that it will not go through Congress to create regional “climate hubs” to deal with the supposed crisis of “climate change.” This comes

AS celebrity gossip goes, it takes some beating: actress and model Elizabeth Hurley has a year-long affair with Bill Clinton while he was US president. Throw in the suggestion that they had a liaison in the White House while Hillary Clinton was next door, and that Mr Clinton ended it when he realised he was falling in love, and you have a story that rivals Marilyn Monroe´s alleged fling with John F Kennedy. But when something sounds too good to be true, it usually is, as Ms Hurley pointed out yesterday when she was forced to deny the "ludicrously silly" report

Specter of welfare state jolts Democrats

The White House and congressional Democrats tried to limit the fallout Wednesday from the politically damaging conclusion in a Congressional Budget Office report that the Obamacare entitlement creates a major incentive for some people not to work. While some critics focused on a finding by the CBO that Obamacare will result in 2.5 million fewer workers over a decade, conservatives said the bigger fundamental issue highlighted in the report is one familiar to the welfare state — that taxpayer-funded government subsidies provide disincentives for full-time work. “People used to be stuck in jobs because they needed the health insurance,” said

The Virginia legislature years ago banned governors from donating excess inauguration funds to political causes, but that hasn’t stopped Gov. Terry McAuliffe from finding a way to route $211,000 from his inaugural fund back to his election campaign and the Virginia Democratic Party, disclosure records show. Mr. McAuliffe’s aides say the two $78,000 checks his inaugural committee sent to his campaign committee along with a $55,000 check to the state Democratic Party were expenditures for the rental of email lists. But campaign finance analysts told The Washington Times that the costs of the email rentals appeared to be exorbitant, and

(Video) Jakarta, Indonesia- Search and recovery teams have again halted their perilous task of looking for victims from the recent volcanic eruptions of Indonesia´s Mount Sinabung, disaster officials said. The death toll currently stands at 15 after plumes of ash spewed more than a mile into the sky Saturday and descended in superheated clouds. Scalding ash up to 700 degrees in temperature raced down the slope in just two to three minutes, engulfing Sukameriah, a village close to the volcano´s crater. A funnel of smoke, visible from kilometers away, has continued to shoot up from the North Sumatra mountain, turning

Between 1 million and 2 million Americans signed up for Medicaid last year because of the health-care law, according to a new report suggesting that many of the people who have joined the program since the initiative’s rollout in October would have done so absent the law. The Obama administration has said that 6.3 million people were determined to be eligible for Medicaid between October and December. But the study, from health-care industry consulting firm Avalere Health, suggests that only a fraction of the enrollments are strictly the result of the health-care law. White House spokesman Jay Carney Monday waved off concerns over the president’s prime-time public interference in the FBI investigation of the Internal Revenue Service. “Obviously we do not interfere with Justice Department investigations,” Carney said when he was asked about President Barack Obama’s statement just before the Super Bowl that there was “not even a smidgen of corruption” in his IRS’s decision to deny routine fundraising rights and legal protections to Tea Party political groups during the 2012 campaign. Besides, said Carney, Obama’s statement is reasonable.

Washington — Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says he’s convinced the effects of climate change have already had a negative impact on agriculture and forestry in the U.S. Vilsack is citing the intensity and frequency of recent storms, plus droughts, snowstorms and subzero weather. He says the nation must play an active role in preparing for climate change. Vilsack spoke at the White House as the Obama administration announced it is creating seven regional hubs to help coordinate and distribute information about the effects of climate change. The hubs will be based at Agriculture Department facilities. They’ll assess local climate risks, such as

NASHUA -- Thomas Pappas, chairman of the Nashua Police Commission, voluntarily resigned from his position on Wednesday, about three weeks after his involvement in state Rep. David Campbell´s duck killing incident was revealed. "He regrets greatly his role and the events of Dec. 23," Attorney Jim Rosenberg said of Pappas. "He is deeply saddened by the fact that he is resigning his post now." Campbell called Pappas after he had a couple of drinks and ultimately ran over several mallard ducks with his BMW, killing five of them on Dec. 23 outside of the Crowne Plaza.

Annie Lowrey, an economics reporter for the New York Times, has an essay in this coming weekend´s Times magazine rebutting what she calls "the policy solution du jour" to the problem of "how to alleviate poverty"--namely, "marriage promotion." She makes a good case that the argument she´s rebutting is fallacious, then concludes by committing the same fallacy in reverse. "Economists have done studies showing that if you snapped your fingers and suddenly all the country´s poor, unmarried partners were hitched . . . the poverty rate would drop," a catchy if imprecise way of saying that there is a strong correlation

House committees are still digging into the IRS political targeting scandal, and based on a hearing Wednesday there´s more to learn. The day produced more evidence blowing apart President Obama´s claims that there was "not even a smidgen of corruption" or political motivation in the IRS handling of groups applying for tax-exempt status. Mr. Obama wants Americans to believe that the targeting resulted from the confusing tax law governing nonprofits, which he says was "difficult" to interpret and resulted in mere "bureaucratic" mistakes. This is also the Administration´s justification for issuing new regulations governing

The Afghan government chose the Taliban over the Obama administration, but in the end both Afghanistan and the U.S. got rolled. Just 12 years after American forces´ historic liberation of Afghanistan in the weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the very same bloodthirsty Taliban we ousted, still fully committed to terrorist jihad and Shariah law, are on a short path back into power. Jobs: ObamaCare backers are working hard to put a happy face on news the Affordable Care Act will cause the labor force to shrink by 2.5 million full-time jobs over the next decade. What they´ve come up with isn´t pretty. We don´t expect much in the way of sound economic reasoning from liberals, but listening to their reaction to the latest findings on ObamaCare left us dumbstruck. To recap: The Congressional Budget Office determined that ObamaCare would discourage work, in large part because many middle-income families will find themselves in what amounts to a 50% marginal income tax bracket as ObamaCare subsidies

(Photographs, Tweets) Journalists checking in were left stunned as they arrived for bookings made last summer to be told they would have to wait indefinitely. The few that did get rooms, were met with stray dogs, half-built walls, and toxic yellow water spitting from the sinks. One hotel lobby had no floor - but

Now that the State Department has reported the obvious — that the Keystone XL pipeline would have virtually no effect on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions or on global temperatures — the opponents of the project are bringing the heat. But in the realm of energy and environmental policy, Pavlov’s dogs are many, loyal, and deeply religious, and unlike Sherlock Holmes’s four-legged friend in Silver Blaze, they decidedly are not silent. One such immediate reaction was offered by Professor Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University, who informs us modestly that “the future survival and wellbeing of humanity” is at stake.
