Annie Lowrey, an economics reporter for the New York Times, has an essay in this coming weekend´s Times magazine rebutting what she calls "the policy solution du jour" to the problem of "how to alleviate poverty"--namely, "marriage promotion." She makes a good case that the argument she´s rebutting is fallacious, then concludes by committing the same fallacy in reverse. "Economists have done studies showing that if you snapped your fingers and suddenly all the country´s poor, unmarried partners were hitched . . . the poverty rate would drop," a catchy if imprecise way of saying that there is a strong correlation

Obama´s IRS ´Confusion´

House committees are still digging into the IRS political targeting scandal, and based on a hearing Wednesday there´s more to learn. The day produced more evidence blowing apart President Obama´s claims that there was "not even a smidgen of corruption" or political motivation in the IRS handling of groups applying for tax-exempt status. Mr. Obama wants Americans to believe that the targeting resulted from the confusing tax law governing nonprofits, which he says was "difficult" to interpret and resulted in mere "bureaucratic" mistakes. This is also the Administration´s justification for issuing new regulations governing

Failed Diplomacy: Would you rather deal with mass murderers or incompetents? The Afghan government chose the Taliban over the Obama administration, but in the end both Afghanistan and the U.S. got rolled. Just 12 years after American forces´ historic liberation of Afghanistan in the weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the very same bloodthirsty Taliban we ousted, still fully committed to terrorist jihad and Shariah law, are on a short path back into power. The New York Times reported Monday that the already-tattered relationship between the Obama administration and Afghan President Hamid Karzai — brought into power by

Jobs: ObamaCare backers are working hard to put a happy face on news the Affordable Care Act will cause the labor force to shrink by 2.5 million full-time jobs over the next decade. What they´ve come up with isn´t pretty. We don´t expect much in the way of sound economic reasoning from liberals, but listening to their reaction to the latest findings on ObamaCare left us dumbstruck. To recap: The Congressional Budget Office determined that ObamaCare would discourage work, in large part because many middle-income families will find themselves in what amounts to a 50% marginal income tax bracket as ObamaCare subsidies

The sex initiation camps of Malawi

Girls as young as ten are being sent to initiation camps in Malawi to be taught about how to have sex and in some cases lose their virginity. The girls are told by their families they are attending a camp with their friends, but when they arrive they are shown how to have sex and told they must lose their ´child dust´ as soon as they can or they will get a skin disease. The horrifying practice is not new - it is a time-honored ritual passed through generations and the girls are sent by their families to make sure they

When Josh and Robbyn Blick learned that their son would be born with a fatal genetic abnormality, they were excited about the days they would get to spend with him - even if there weren´t many. So when little Zion Isaiah was born on January 11 - weighing just 4 pounds and 7 ounces - they were [overjoyed] to welcome him - and overjoyed when he fought to live for ten days. With terrorist threats, homophobic attacks, and diplomatic tensions, many have questioned whether Sochi is ready to hold the Winter Olympic Games. Now, just days away from the landmark event, the first images have emerged of the city´s unprepared hotels. And it seems the doubtful were right. (Photographs, Tweets) Journalists checking in were left stunned as they arrived for bookings made last summer to be told they would have to wait indefinitely. The few that did get rooms, were met with stray dogs, half-built walls, and toxic yellow water spitting from the sinks. One hotel lobby had no floor - but

The Fact-free Opposition to Keystone XL

Now that the State Department has reported the obvious — that the Keystone XL pipeline would have virtually no effect on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions or on global temperatures — the opponents of the project are bringing the heat. But in the realm of energy and environmental policy, Pavlov’s dogs are many, loyal, and deeply religious, and unlike Sherlock Holmes’s four-legged friend in Silver Blaze, they decidedly are not silent. One such immediate reaction was offered by Professor Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University, who informs us modestly that “the future survival and wellbeing of humanity” is at stake.

Three years after the death of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry -- a tragedy which exposed and ultimately ended Operation Fast and Furious -- the public is finally getting a glimpse into Terry´s final moments. Federal court records released Tuesday provide the first official account of the firefight along the Arizona-Mexico border that killed Terry in December 2010. Among other details, they reveal two of four federal agents at the scene that day actually fired bean bags -- not bullets -- at a violent drug gang carrying assault rifles. Weapons from the botched anti-gun trafficking program were found at Terry´s

Sheila Jackson Lee, a far-left legislator who has served in Congress since 1995, said during a Jan. 29 press conference the new caucus will be working to ´give President Obama a number of executive orders that he can sign with pride and strength.´ ´In fact,´ she said, ´I think that should

An attack on California electrical transformers in April is believed by some to be a practice round for a terrorist attack on the U.S. power grid. The coordinated attack began outside of Silicon Valley where attackers cut telephone wires at 1 a.m. on April 16, according to the Wall Street Journal. About half an hour later snipers shot at an electrical substation for about 19 minutes, destroying 17 transformers in the process. The attackers escaped before police arrived and remain at large. It took 27 days to repair the substation and crews had to reroute power around the site using Silicon Valley power

One of the most unfortunate pieces of White House spinning over the Iran nuclear negotiations is that those who supported new sanctions legislation – including several Democrat senators--were effectively "voting for war". They weren´t. What they were voting for was an alternative way of dealing with Iran. A more results-driven and fact-based approach, that clashes with several of the premises that underpin the current Kerry-Obama approach to the negotiations. The new Senate sanctions bill (now successfully stalled, it seems) didn´t call for new sanctions straight away. What it did was seek to put a hard floor under the negotiations process:

President Obama´s chemical weapons deal with Syria has “improved” Syrian President Bashar Assad´s position, Secretary of State John Kerry acknowledged Wednesday. Kerry´s admission comes after Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told Congress last week the deal “adds legitimacy” to the Assad regime, even as it has the potential to eliminate a threat to the U.S. The deal is coming under fire, after Syria blew crucial deadlines in recent weeks, turning over only about 5 percent of its arsenal. The Assad regime has until June 30 to eliminate the program. “It´s fair to say that Assad has improved his position a little

Germany´s wind and solar power generation came to a standstill in late 2013. More than 23,000 wind turbines ran out of wind and most of the one million photovoltaic systems ran out of sunlight. For a whole week, coal nuclear and gas-powered plants generated an estimated 95 percent of Germany´s electricity. Britain has 3,500 wind turbines, but during a period of extreme cold they produced just 1.8% of UK´s electricity. But, gluttons for punishment, politicians intend building more.

WASHINGTON — President Obama´s comments in a pre-Super Bowl interview about the tax exemptions of political groups have reignited the partisan debate on Capitol Hill over the Internal Revenue Service´s role in policing political speech. Mike Lee (R-Utah).
