GOP presses on IRS targeting

WASHINGTON — President Obama´s comments in a pre-Super Bowl interview about the tax exemptions of political groups have reignited the partisan debate on Capitol Hill over the Internal Revenue Service´s role in policing political speech. With IRS Commissioner John Koskinen testifying at a House subcommittee Wednesday for this first time since his confirmation in December, Republicans and Democrats argued anew over the IRS´s admission last May that it improperly targeted Tea Party groups. On Sunday, Obama told Fox News the controversy came out of "bone-headed decisions" in the agency´s Cincinnati office and "not even a smidgen of corruption." "This committee

The private jet ferrying Justin Bieber and his entourage, including his father, from Tornoto to Teterboro Friday was so full of marijuana smoke that the pilots wore oxygen masks to avoid inhaling and risk failing a drug test, multiple sources tell NBC News. NBC also obtained an official report in which the flight attendant says she took refuge in the cockpit for much of the flight because Bieber and his father were extremely verbally abusive. The singer has been burnishing his bad boy image of late: He had been in Toronto to answer charges of assault against a limo driver,

Sen. Lee: Congress Chooses Not

Although Congress still has the “power of the purse,” it chooses not to withhold funding whenever President Obama tries to do an end-run around it by issuing executive orders because members of both parties are content with passing all-or-nothing spending bills that take this constitutional option off the table, says Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah). CNSNews.com asked Lee why Congress has not used its constitutional authority to rein-in such presidential overreach. “Yeah, Congress has not done that, and it’s a source of great frustration to me," the Utah Republican replied. "A lot of it has to do with the fact that

White House press secretary Jay Carney assured ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl that President Obama did not “misspeak” when he said that there was “not even a smidgen of corruption” in the IRS targeting scandal. President Obama made the remark to Fox News’s Bill O’Reilly in their Super Bowl Sunday interview. Carney told Karl that there were “at least 20 news organizations” that agreed with an independent Investigator General who said, back in May, that he found no evidence “that anyone outside of the IRS” participated in any “inappropriate targeting of conservative, or progressive for that matter,

WASHINGTON -- A poll indicated Wednesday that if former U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton runs for president her biggest challenge could come from a more conservative Democrat. While the poll, conducted by CNN, finds Clinton an overwhelming favorite with 70 percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independent voters saying they would support her if she mounts a second presidential bid in 2016, the split on the remaining Democrats is surprising. Conventional wisdom has held Clinton´s biggest liability in a potential primary is from the liberal wing of the party, where President Barack Obama found support to defeat her in their historic 2008 primary race. MIAMI-DADE COUNTY – A giant python that was found and killed Tuesday may be the largest python ever caught in the state of Florida. The man who killed the python, Bobby Hill, was on a levee 5 miles north of Tamiami Trail just west of Krome Avenue when he came across the 18-foot, 2-inch snake on the levee. Hill, who gets rid of the pythons for a living, shot and killed the massive snake. The body is now on its way to the University of Florida to be studied, which is where a lot of the pythons caught and killed

If the entire Congress is willing to give President Barack Obama a pass on being a Marxist/Socialist, why shouldn’t the allegedly right-of-centre Fox News Corp. comfortably do the same thing? Whitewashing the fact that top Fox guy Bill O’Reilly said of Marxist Obama: “He is not a bad guy. I think people misread him”, Fox News followed O’Reilly February 2nd interview by heaping praise on him for “asking the right questions”. If there was any chance of Obama answering the “right questions”, he would never have shown up for the Fox interview. Planting doubt in the minds of viewers that Obama is only

On Tuesday, Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell told reporters immigration is just not in the cards in 2014. Last Thursday, rank-and-file House members sent a loud message at that President Obama is not the partner for legislation, spooking even top proponent Paul Ryan. The editors from National Review, Weekly Standard, and numerous other top conservative pundits have urged the Ohio Republican to cut it out. However, since the GOP retreat last week, Boehner has just kept marching along. “I think leadership´s focus and my focus is to get [immigration] done as early as possible,” said Rep. WASHINGTON — Conservative Republicans on Wednesday ruled out any immigration legislation in the House this year, insisting that the GOP should wait until next year when the party might also control the Senate. House GOP leaders unveiled their broad immigration principles last week that gave hope to advocates and the Obama administration that the first changes in the nation’s laws in three decades might happen in the coming months. Immigration legislation is one of the top priorities for Obama’s second term. But several of the conservatives were adamant that the House should do nothing on the issue this year, a

Israeli victims of terrorism lashed out at Secretary of State John Kerry for his “insensitivity” after he inaccurately claimed “not one Israeli was killed by a Palestinian from the West Bank” in a recent speech. During a controversial speech over the weekend in Germany, Kerry threatened Israel with economic boycotts and claimed that the Jewish state is enjoying a respite from Palestinian terrorism. “There’s a momentary prosperity, there’s a momentary peace,” Kerry said. “Last year, not one Israeli was killed by a Palestinian from the West Bank.” However, this is untrue. The Obama administration’s Treasury Department and former IRS official Lois Lerner conspired to draft new 501(c)(4) regulations to restrict the activity of conservative groups in a way that would not be disclosed publicly, according to the House Committee on Ways and Means. The Treasury Department and Lerner started devising the new rules “off-plan,” meaning that their plans would not be published on the public schedule. They planned the new rules in 2012, while the IRS targeting of conservative groups was in full swing, and not after the scandal broke in order to clarify regulations as the administration has suggested.

The IRS’ proposed changes to requirements for tax-exempt “social welfare” organizations, which would put new limits on their political activity, are the latest attempt by the federal agency to target conservative groups, Republican lawmakers said Tuesday. The regulations, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich., said in a hearing, were “drafted in a manner, in my view, to shut down tea party groups.” (Snip) Rep. Charles Boustany, R-La., chairman of the Ways and Means’ oversight subpanel, similarly said that the new rules would “essentially codify the continued targeting of these very same groups” that were previously targeted.
