Work Confronts Obama

During a Google Hangout session on Friday, fry cook Darnell Summers told President Obama that his hours were cut due to the Affordable Care Act. “We were broken down to part time to avoid paying health insurance,” he said. Summers explained that he makes $7.25 an hour and has been on strike four times seeking a wage increase. “We can’t survive, it’s not livin’,” he said. The president responded by urging states to increase the minimum wage. “I am working to encourage states, governors, mayors, state legislators to raise their own minimum wage,” Obama said. “Obviously, the way to reach

WASHINGTON — Ken Cope, one of seven Republicans running against Sen. John Cornyn in the March 4 primary, today called on Rep. Steve Stockman to drop out, asserting that he has become an embarrassment to the party. “The unserious antics you have engaged in since entering the Senate race have done damage to the Republican brand,” Cope wrote Stockman in a letter shared by his campaign. “There are a number of serious candidates opposing Senator Cornyn. But the way you have conducted your campaign has caused the news media and other observers to view all of the challenging candidates negatively

NEW YORK — For a stateswoman-celebrity whose public life has been a whirl of black-tie galas and glitzy awards ceremonies, Hillary Rodham Clinton’s event here Tuesday morning was a stark departure. The prospective 2016 presidential candidate came to an East Harlem classroom, sat beneath crayon posters and alphabet letters and urged Hispanic parents to read and sing to their children to help develop their language skills. “Every child — every single child — in our country deserves to have a fair chance to live up to his or her God-given potential,” Clinton said. The appearance was tied to the launch

The Seattle Seahawks are not going to rest on their Super Bowl laurels as victorious quarterback Russell Wilson has announced plans to head to a baseball team´s spring training session. The professional football player has a history of switching between sports, as he played in one of the minor league baseball teams before being drafted into the NFL. He played as a part of the Class A teams for the Colorado Rockies baseball teams in 2010 and 2011 before switching his sights to football in 2012. Back in December, a year after signing his four-year $2.99million contract with the Seahawks,

Grassroots GOP looking for Hill

To understand why grassroots dissatisfaction with the Republican establishment in Washington is so intense, look no further than the Agriculture Act of 2014 produced by a Senate-House conference committee. The measure will soon be on President Obama´s desk, and he will sign it into law. The conventional wisdom inside the Beltway is that the farm bill shows it remains possible for the Democratic Senate and Republican House to put their profound differences aside and compromise in order to move important legislation. On closer inspection, however, it´s business-as-usual in Washington, with Republican conference committee negotiators collapsing like an old sports stadium

State Dept.: Not Building Keystone Pipeline

Not building the 875-mile Keystone XL Pipeline could result in the release of up to 42 percent more greenhouse gases than would be released by building it, according to the State Department. Not building the pipeline “is unlikely to significantly impact the rate of extraction in the [Canadian] oil sands or the continued demand for heavy crude oil at refineries in the United States,” the department noted in a long-awaited environmental report released January 31st. But the “No Build” option is likely to result in an increased number of oil spills, six more deaths annually, and up to 42 percent higher greenhouse

Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis´ (D) four-month-old Texas gubernatorial campaign has been taking a beating lately. The newest slam is from Texas Observer, generally viewed as a left-leaning publication, whose Dave Mann on Friday provided a takedown of the campaign´s media operation. Mann called Davis´ press team the "worst" he´s ever seen, and wrote that it´s hurting her campaign: [...] I have covered many political campaigns in Texas the past decade, so I know what it looks like when a campaign handles the press well. And the Wendy Davis operation is about the worst at media relations that I’ve ever seen. Her team’s

A car fanatic gave his pet dog away after he was left distraught when she chewed a hole through the wheel arch of his prized £80,000 Aston Martin. Builder Royston Grimstead, 42, was devastated when he came home to find his border collie spaniel cross Luce had chewed through the fibreglass panel of his luxury car - causing £3,000 of damage. Mr Grimstead, from Chedzoy, Somerset, said he had already been considering re-homing the dog, which he said did not get along with his other dog, but the damage to the car was the final straw. Stand outside Ruth´s wooden home here in Alaska and you´ll hear only an occasional sound: A plane buzzes overhead, a reminder that the only way in or out of this village at this time of year is by air. Snowmobile tracks in her driveway, fossilized by the cold, creak and pop under your feet like brittle Styrofoam. And the wind: The constant shhhhh as it rattles the tundra. It sounds almost like a whisper. Like this land is keeping secrets. Next to Ruth´s house is a shack: One room, wood stove, metal roof. Its plywood walls are so leaky that socks and towels are

GOP War on Conservatives Backfires

On Friday, every political campaign had to file its 2013 year end report with the FEC. The reports delivered two big surprises. The Democrats are dominating the Republicans in fundraising. More surprising, perhaps, though, is that Tea Party and conservative SuperPACs raised around three times as much as GOP establishment SuperPACs. The DC GOP may have started the war against the Tea Party, but it won´t finish it. Not long after their stunning losses in 2012, Karl Rove and other establishment Republicans announced a new effort to engage in primaries to ensure the "right" candidates got the party´s nomination. Yesterday in an interview with Fox News host and my squash partner, Bill O´Reilly, President Obama slapped Fox News for covering stuff like the IRS and ObamaCare.(Snip)Now, blaming Fox News for Obama´s scandals is like blaming rubble for an earthquake. FNC did not create ObamaCare or target enemies for IRS investigations. His people inflicted that pain. FNC just asked about the bruising. But to use a football metaphor, once again, FNC is that sole remaining cheerleader who won´t end up under the bleachers with the star QB. Sorry, O. We aren´t like all those other MSM floozies. When Elizabeth Warren announced her Senate candidacy in September 2011, President Obama had just signed into law the Budget Control Act, which raised the debt ceiling but also made concessions to Republicans that would eventually lead to $1 trillion in sequestration cuts. Deficit control was a top priority for both parties, and something that Obama pledged to continue to pursue in a rare address to a joint session of Congress that month on his jobs plan. But the speech Obama gave last week to a similar joint session of Congress felt very different. His 2014 State of the Union address brushed

Former Oregon Republican state Rep. Patrick Sheehan is alleging that Cover Oregon staff created dummy web pages to fool the Obama administration into thinking the Obamacare exchange was being built on time. Sheehan, a former state representation on Oregon’s joint IT oversight committee, reports that he’s gone to the FBI with his evidence concerning Cover Oregon’s botched launch. Sheehan alleges that Oregon officials may have been touting “smoke and mirrors” in order to receive federal funding and con state lawmakers into believing the Obamacare exchange was further along than it really was. The Seattle Seahawks have revealed that a good part of their defensive strategy at the Super Bowl came from the fact that they were able to decode Peyton Manning´s hand signals on the field. Controversial corner back Richard Sherman said that he and his fellow defenders cracked the code that the Denver Broncos quarterback was using, meaning that they knew exactly what to expect for each play. ´We knew what route concepts they liked on different downs, so we jumped all the routes.

Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer has held private talks on immigration with Republican Reps. Paul Ryan and Trey Gowdy. President Barack Obama’s emissaries have spoken with House GOP leadership about an overhaul. Speaker John Boehner and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi have also chatted on the House floor about immigration. It sometimes seems like House Republicans are in their own universe when it comes to rewriting the nation’s immigration laws. But since late last year, key House Republicans have been meeting with House and Senate Democrats as they try to reach a deal. The talks haven’t led to any agreement on hugely

Speaking at a middle school in suburban Maryland on Tuesday, the president touted ConnectED — a program announced last year that aims to get nearly every classroom in America outfitted with high-speed Internet access. "In a country where we expect free Wi-Fi with our coffee, we should definitely demand it in our schools," Obama said. The president touted a $2 billion "down payment" from the Federal Communications Commission that will connect some

On Tuesday afternoon, the White House responded to the Congressional Budget Office’s new annual budget projection, arguing that the details of the report did not support claims that Obamacare was eliminating jobs. “Claims that the Affordable Care Act hurts jobs are simply belied by the facts in the CBO report,” the statement read. “CBO’s findings are not driven by an assumption that ACA will lead employers to eliminate jobs or reduce hours; in fact the report itself says that there is ‘no compelling evidence that part-time employment has increased as a result of the ACA.” The statement goes on to

The Republican Party is pushing immigration reform, and the GOP´s new apparent political adviser, Chuck Schumer, gleefully approves. Next, the Democrat senator will be advising the party on gun control, government spending, abortion and homosexual marriage. We finally have a news cycle that exposes Obama and his socialist Democrats´ biggest blunder, the absolute worst piece of legislation in the history of the nation -- Obamacare. And the GOP´s response is to divert national attention to an illegal immigration reform plan that most Americans adamantly oppose. Is the Republican leadership insane? Here´s some shocking political news from New Jersey, and it has nothing to do with the George Washington Bridge. The news, from philly.com, is that Rep. Rob Andrews will resign from Congress later this month to take a job with an unnamed Philadelphia law firm. No big scandal here, though the article notes that Andrews may be under investigation for spending campaign money on a family trip to Scotland (sounds pretty innocent to me). What´s interesting is that this comes just days after California Rep. George Miller announced his retirement, as I noted in my Monday column on the passing

If you like having terrible songs stuck in your head for hours, then you’ll love the new Enroll America video.
