The Dark Side of the
War on ´the One Percent´

Two phenomena: anti-Semitism and American class conflict. Is there any connection between them? In a letter to this newspaper, the noted venture capitalist Tom Perkins called attention to certain parallels, as he saw them, between Nazi Germany´s war against the Jews and American progressives´ war on the "one percent." For comparing two such historically disparate societies, Mr. Perkins was promptly and heatedly denounced. But is there something to be said for his comparison—not of Germany and the United States, of course, but of the politics at work in the two situations? The place to begin is at the starting point: with

For a candidate who owes her name recognition to a friendly media, Wendy Davis is having trouble not riling up the local press. Dave Mann of the Texas Observer writes that the extent to which her team is botching media relations is "the worst ... I´ve ever seen," an embarrassment weakening her candidacy. Mann initially admits that he is not a media relations specialist, but has covered a large number of political campaigns. Davis´s, he says, holds the record for absolute worst, and it threatens to sink her entire campaign. Attributing the follies to inexperienced, young media flacks, Mann nonetheless

Scandal: President Obama told Fox News´ Bill O´Reilly that the IRS targeting of dissidents had not a "smidgen of corruption." In light of rafts of evidence it happened, his dismissal of such an abuse of power is disingenuous at best. In a contentious interview with O´Reilly, President Obama claimed the Internal Revenue Service´s targeting of political dissidents he´d earlier blasted as enemies had "not even a smidgen of corruption" about it. Perhaps his denial is an indirect admission that what happened wasn´t pocket-lining, but an actual purge, but we think he understood very well that an impartial federal agency has no business

Just as computer technology greatly expanded Americans´ wealth in the 1990s, the clean energy market could do the same thing in the years ahead, Secretary of State John Kerry told the Munich Security Conference in Germany on Saturday. He touted climate change as a societal challenge and an economic opportunity: "We created the greatest wealth the world has seen during the 1990s, greater even in America than the period of the Pierponts and the Morgans and the Rockefellers, Carnegies, Mellons--much greater. You know what it was? It was a $1-trillion market with 1 billion users. It was the high-tech market,

Nineteen veterans diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and 2011 died because the Department of Veterans Affairs failed to conduct medical screenings in a timely fashion, CNN reports. VA documents obtained by the network linked these veterans’ deaths to long-term delays in the system that impeded their receiving timely diagnoses and treatments. The 19 veterans are part of a larger group of 82 veterans who have died, are dying, or have suffered serious injuries because of the delays. One man, Barry Coates, was repeatedly told that he “may need a colonoscopy,” but only after calling the department and setting up an

He has been dead for 1,200 years – but only now have scientists finally identified the bones of Charlemagne. After 26 years of research, German scientists are satisfied that bones held for centuries at Aachen Cathedral, Germany, are those of the king of the Franks, who is also known as the father of Europe. They said that the bones came from an older man who was tall and thin. A total of 94 bones and fragments were analysed from the cathedral and are believed to belong to the founder of the Holy Roman Empire. The sarcophagus holding the remains was

The Transportation Department announced Monday that it is moving forward with what is known as “connected-vehicle technology,” the first step toward driverless vehicles.

It´s been decided that vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, which allow cars and trucks to "talk" with one another and their surroundings, will move from just research to actual implementation thanks to a recent approval. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) wants to put V2V technology in all new cars and trucks as a way of avoiding traffic accidents and fatalities. For example, your car could let you know that another vehicle ahead is about to blow through a stop sign in an attempt to avoid a crash.

Super Bowl ads tread lightly so

NEW YORK — What Super Bowl ads will people discuss over the water cooler a day after the big game? There were no crude jokes. Sexual innuendo was kept to a minimum. And uncomfortable scenes were missing. In short, there wasn´t much shock value. Sure, RadioShack poked fun at its image by starring 80s icons like Teen Wolf in its ad. And Coca-Cola struck an emotional chord by showcasing people of different diversities in its spot. As did Chrysler, with its "Made in America" message. But with a 30-second Super Bowl commercial fetching $4 million and more than 108 million

BURBANK, Calif.— Jay Leno, as affably efficient backstage as he is in front of the camera, avoids waxing poetic about his 22-year ‘‘Tonight Show’’ run that draws to a close Thursday. Instead, he relies on numbers to tell the story. Leno’s tenure is second only to Johnny Carson’s 30 years; ‘‘Tonight’’ was No. 1 among viewers when he took it over and will be when he hands it off to Jimmy Fallon; he´ll have taped more shows than any predecessor, Carson included, with the final and 4,610th one. His dry assessment also may stem from a case of deja vu.

Sugar not only makes you fat, it may be killing you. Consuming too much added sugar — in regular soda, cakes, cookies and candy — increases your risk of death from heart disease, according to a new study, the largest of its type. "The risk of cardiovascular disease death increases exponentially as you increase your consumption of added sugar," says the study´s lead author, Quanhe Yang, a senior scientist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. On average, adults in the USA in 2010 consumed about 15% of their daily calories — about 300 calories a day, based on

Joe Namath seems to be taking fashion tips from the IKEA monkey. The football legend showed up to Super Bowl XLVIII Sunday in an oversized fur coat, not unlike the one the infamous primate was spotted running around in at a Toronto IKEA store last fall. The extravagant fur was the talk of Twitter, even as the Seattle Seahawks crushed the Denver Broncos in a 43-8 win. Fans drew comparisons to coats worn by rapper Macklemore, Liberace, Ron Burgundy and several users’ grandmothers. Imagine, if you will, it´s the midterm election year of 2006 and President George W. Bush´s secretary of state making careless remarks which seem to lend moral validity to an economic boycott of the United States´s staunchest ally in the Middle East. The Washington Post would surely glom onto such an embarrassing gaffe and play it up as much as possible. Yet when John Kerry made such remarks about the State of Israel, the Post´s William Booth spun the gaffe as best he could, seemingly exasperated that Israeli statesmen were even complaining about the remarks. The White House on Monday vowed they help the tens of thousands of ObamaCare enrollees who contend that the HealthCare.gov website improperly enrolled them during the sign-up process to purchase new insurance. "We are going to get them help," White House press secretary Jay Carney said. On Sunday, The Washington Post reported that approximately 22,000 Americans had filed appeals with the government to correct errors with their enrollment data. The complaints charge that the ObamaCare marketplace had charged them too much for insurance, incorrectly enrolled them or didn´t enroll them at all. Appearing on MSNBC with Tamron Hall on Monday, The Daily Beast columnist Michael Tomasky criticized Fox News Channel host Bill O’Reilly for spending what Tomasky called “wasted time” asking President Barack Obama about the deadly 2012 attack on an American consulate in Benghazi. After playing a portion of the interview, Hall noted that Tomasky had written that the interview was largely about generating ratings than about getting to the bottom of the White House’s early response to that attack. He specifically criticized O’Reilly for asking Obama about former United Nations Amb. Susan Rice insisting that the attack was initially a
