When I was first elected, one of the first lobbyists to darken my door was a highly paid man who was lobbying for “highway safety” in Florida. He said he was representing a nonprofit group concerned that the recent conversion of highway signs to metric was a safety hazard as people took their focus off the highway to figure out how far 50 kilometers was. I was curious and did a little research. It seems this group was heavily funded by the company that sold the reflective paint for the highway signs. No wonder they were suddenly concerned with safety.

President Barack Obama sat down with Fox News anchor Bill O’Reilly for a pre-Super Bowl interview, a reprise of the Q&A the two did before the 2011 game, and Obama’s sixth straight pre-Super Bowl interview. O’Reilly grilled Obama on why Kathleen Sebelius had not been fired, noting that he as a taxpayer was paying her salary, and also asked if Obama thought the “If you like your plan you can keep your plan” claim was his “biggest mistake?” Obama responded to both queries by arguing that the implementation of the Affordable Care Act was an ongoing process, and he was committed to

Killer batch of white heroin responsible

Heroin overdose deaths across the country are spiking as a deadly new variant of the drug mixed with a powerful painkiller is spreading from New Hampshire to Washington State. The lethal combination of heroin and fentanyl, an opiate used to soothe the pain of cancer patients, is blamed for about 100 deaths from coast to coast. It is variously labelled as ‘bud ice,’ ‘income tax’ and ‘theraflu,’ authorities say. The hardest hit states in the epidemic are Maryland, with more than three dozen deaths since September, and Pennsylvania, with almost two dozen this month alone, according to reports.

October 28, 2013 the governors of California, Oregon, Washington, and the premier of British Columbia signed a pact pledging to take a variety of actions to reduce carbon emissions. Supporters hailed the agreement as a landmark effort to move away from fossil fuel-based energy and “green” the states’ various economies. California already had a cap and trade regime, and British Columbia had imposed a carbon tax in 2008. Supporters of the plan worried that the actual policies it called for would get tied up in Oregon and Washington. Republicans controlled the Washing- ton state senate, supporters noted, and they’d been cool to some

Woody Allen responded Sunday to the accusations of his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow, who claimed that Allen sexually assaulted her when she was seven years old. “Mr. Allen has read the article and found it untrue and disgraceful. He will be responding very soon,” a rep for Allen told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement. Farrow published a letter yesterday detailing her suffering from alleged sexual assault by Woody Allen as a child. The director was never convicted of any crime relating to the allegations. Allen’s attorneys responded Sunday in a statement:“It is tragic that after 20 years a story

A spat between gun-maker Daniel Defense and the National Football League is over this pro-gun ad you won’t see during this year’s Super Bowl. It features a Marine Corps veteran going through his daily life with his family and child. “It’s been a long road getting here, and a lot has changed since I got back,” he says. “I am responsible for their protection, and no one has the right to tell me how to defend them.” “So I’ve chosen the most effective tool for the job.” As the foreboding music plays in the background, you could cut the tension

Paul Ryan: Obama presidency

Top House Republicans slammed President Obama’s embrace of executive action to move his agenda forward on Sunday, saying the president’s freelancing creates a trust deficit that makes bipartisan legislating more difficult. “We have an increasingly lawless presidency where he is actually doing the job of Congress, writing new policies and new laws without going through Congress. Presidents don´t write laws, Congress does,” Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., told ABC. “Executive orders are one thing, but executive orders that actually change the statute, that´s totally different.”

WASHINGTON— Days after House Republicans unveiled a roadmap for an overhaul of the nation´s broken immigration system, one of its backers said legislation is unlikely to pass during this election year. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said distrust of President Barack Obama runs so deep in the Republican caucus that he´s skeptical the GOP-led House would pass any immigration measure. He said a plan that puts security first could only pass if lawmakers believe the administration would enforce it — an unlikely prospect given Republicans´ deep opposition to Obama. "This isn´t a trust-but-verify, this is a verify-then-trust approach," Ryan said. Last

In November, the U.S. Postal Service reported it had a $5 billion loss for Fiscal Year 2013, its seventh consecutive year with loss. At the time, Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe blamed Congress for the loss, citing an “inflexible business model.” “We’ve achieved some excellent results for the year in terms of innovations, revenue gains, and cost reductions, but without major legislative changes we cannot overcome the limitations of our inflexible business model,” Donahoe said. “Congress is moving forward with legislation that has the potential to give us greater flexibility and put us back on a firm financial footing

For decades, Toshiaki Toyoshima has followed the same ritual each morning at his downtown restaurant: He ties on his indigo happi — a short-sleeved Japanese chef´s jacket — and dons a white cap before he begins cutting fish for nearly 500 customers who dine at Sushi Gen daily. But in January, Toyoshima´s tradition-bound routine was upset. He had to add a step: A new law now forces him to snap on a pair of thin vinyl gloves before he can touch the fish. His gloved hands seem to move no less deftly as he stands behind mounds of tuna fillets

Last week a biochemist announced that marijuana “is no worse than alcohol.” OK, he’s not exactly a biochemist, but he does have some expertise on the subject. As a teenager in an exclusive private school in Hawaii, he was a member of a “club” called the Choom Gang. They had a narrow charter: It was to get high smoking marijuana every day. “Barry,” as he was then called, excelled. President Barack Obama, as he is now called, still publicly jokes and brags about his teenage marijuana habit. But the president of the United States of America promises that he does

Jackson, Mississippi — A woman has been found guilty of manslaughter for the illicit silicone buttocks injections that prosecutors say killed a Georgia woman in 2012. Natasha Stewart, of suburban Memphis, Tenn., was found guilty Friday in Jackson, Miss., in the death of 37-year-old Karima Gordon of Atlanta. Stewart had been charged with "depraved-heart" murder, but the jury was told it could consider the lesser charge of manslaughter. Authorities say Stewart, an adult entertainer also known as Pebbelz Da Model, took $200 for a referral to the alleged injector and falsely represented that the injector was a nurse.

“There is a certain relief in change, even though it be from bad to worse; as I have found in traveling in a stage coach, that it is often a comfort to shift one’s position and be bruised in a new place.” — Washington Irving Rep. If the Super Bowl were what the average Washington pundit thinks politics is supposed to be, then we would have spent the past two weeks reading about how the two opposing teams were looking forward to working together for the common good in today’s game. Just as we are constantly being told to yearn for an era of post-partisan compromise in D.C., our football pundits would be talking about the need for ending the heated rivalries and bringing about an era of cooperation on the field of play! But the chances of truly principled Republicans and Democrats seeing eye to eye about

Barack Obama’s latest State of the Union address was a dreary, tiresome affair—which, to be fair, could be said of most such addresses by most modern presidents. The only real surprise was how he soft-pedaled the problem of inequality. Pre-speech hype had promised this would be the centerpiece theme, and it’s certainly one that has been a hobbyhorse of his Democratic party since its founding. But perhaps, on deeper reflection, we should not be so surprised that the word itself was only mentioned once.(Snip)Indeed, Obama’s address inadvertently referenced the government’s proclivity to play favorites.
