Amanda Knox could face up to five years in jail in the US as she awaits extradition to Italy, it was revealed last night, as the family of her victim called for her to be ‘locked up while she waits’. Top U.S. extradition lawyer Bruce Zagaris said if her latest conviction for the murder of Meredith Kercher is upheld by the Italian Supreme Court, she will be put in jail. Mr Zagaris said: ‘It is rare for the U.S. to deny extradition requests from allied countries like Italy. Her lawyers would have the chance to appeal and any extradition is a long,

FREDERICK, Md. — Roscoe Bartlett was rattling off the prices of giant bags of rice, wheat and corn, sold cheaply at Sam´s Club. The former congressman from rural, western Maryland expressed bewilderment that every American doesn´t stockpile such things, considering what he is sure is coming. "Storing enough calories isn´t really a challenge," said the rugged 87-year-old Republican, who served 10 terms on Capitol Hill. "The real challenge is vitamins and stuff." Bartlett is preparing for an epic power outage. More than the lights would go out, he fears. All electronics could malfunction. Cars might not run. GPS systems would fail. Generators

Now they’re calling Wendy

Of all the names Wendy Davis has been called, the “D” word could be the most damaging. It all started when, at the event where her daughter cried for her on stage, Davis was handed former Gov. Ann Richard’s shotgun, which she held somewhat awkwardly on stage. I don’t claim any expertise on how to hold a shotgun, but it made me uncomfortable seeing the barrel pointing at people, even if the gun was just in the loading position. If I remember nothing else from my NRA safety course, it’s never point a barrel at anyone even if you think the gun

An unhinged upstate man threatened to kill former President George W. Bush so he could get into “a relationship” with Dubya´s daughter Barbara Pierce Bush, authorities said Friday. “Bush will get his,” Pittsford, New York, resident Benjamin Smith, 44, screamed after authorities tracked him to Lexington Ave. and E. 28th St. in Kips Bay — a short distance from the first twin’s Greenwich Village home -- at 6:15 a.m. Friday, officials said. Investigators arrested Smith after a loaded Rossi .38-caliber rifle and a container of gasoline were found in his vehicle. The Secret Service had been looking for Smith for more than 12

Breathitt County, Ky. — The envelopes began arriving in December across eastern Kentucky, one of the sickest and poorest corners of the country. “Dear member ... We want you to be healthy ...” read the letter to Mary Combs, and with it came a plastic card representing the first insurance she ever had: a Medicaid plan made possible by the nation’s new health-care law, effective Jan. 1. Nine days into the new year, the 41-year-old call-center worker headed to the health clinic on Highway 15. She saw a doctor about her chronic stomach ulcers, had her blood drawn for tests

A top commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards boasted Saturday that his forces have plans in place to attack the United States from within, should the U.S. attack the Islamic Republic. “America, with its strategic ignorance, does not have a full understanding of the power of the Islamic Republic,” Brig. Gen. Hossein Salami said in a televised interview. “We have recognized America’s military strategy, and have arranged our abilities, and have identified centers in America [for attack] that will create a shock.” Reports indicate that terrorist Hezbollah forces — allies of Iran — have infiltrated the U.S. and have mapped out targets. “We will

Sen. Granny Warren, the fake Indian, has said many things that we all remember, most of them involving her, ahem, Native-American heritage. That gag about her high cheekbones is one of my personal favorites. But Chief Spreading Bull recently delivered another memorable line at the Martin Luther King breakfast: “We cannot be a country that says, ‘I’ve got mine, the rest of you are on your own.’?” Wow, I thought. What Republican would make such an inflammatory statement? ?Ted Cruz? Rand Paul? Mike Lee from Utah? So I looked it up on Google, and guess what? I could only find one politician who’s

When you analyze the public response to the State of the Union and the latest polling data, it’s clear that the President has lost a tremendous amount of credibility with the American public. I scarcely think he cares at this point. A tired, graying Barack Obama stood before Congress this week as a political figure, party leader, and progressive activist to make sure the Members understood one thing – he doesn’t need them. In fact, he hasn’t needed them in quite some time. After all, in his mind, it’s his government. True, the speech wasn’t as “in your face” as

Mr. President, Republicans are calling your bluff. During last Tuesday’s State of the Union, President Obama responded to the GOP’s attempts to repeal ObamaCare this way: “If you have specific plans to cut costs, cover more people, increase choice, tell America what you’d do differently,” he said. “We all owe it to the American people to say what we’re for, not just what we’re against.” Challenge accepted. Last week, three GOP senators — North Carolina’s Richard Burr, Oklahoma’s Tom Coburn and Utah’s Orrin Hatch — introduced a new proposal that would do far more than repeal ObamaCare and return us to what we

I find myself tugged in two directions by the latest ruling in the defamation suit filed by climatologist Michael Mann. A professor of meteorology at Pennsylvania State University, Mann has long been an object of ire among climate-change skeptics. Now it seems they have let their ire get out of hand. The lawsuit centers around an article published by the Competitive Enterprise Institute and reprinted by the National Review that labeled Mann -- co-author of the well-known hockey-stick graph -- “the Jerry Sandusky of climate science, except that instead of molesting children, he has molested and tortured data in the

A new environmental assessment from the State Department that raised no major environmental concerns on long-delayed Keystone XL pipeline isn´t the last step in deciding whether the pipeline can be built, the White House said late Friday. The long-delayed pipeline got a major boost as it cleared a major hurdle toward approval, a serious blow to environmentalists´ hopes that President Obama will block the controversial project running more than 1,000 miles from Canada through the heart of the U.S. The White House released a statement pushing back on the notion that the pipeline is now headed for speedy approval, saying Sec. of

Ice fishers in Minnesota are reeling from a recent FAA decision prohibiting beer delivery by drone. Local brewery Lakemaid was testing a new drone delivery system to airlift frosty cases of beer to fishermen holed up in ice shacks on Mille Lacs Lake. After spotting a Lakemaid YouTube video that went up last week of one of the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on a test run, the Federal Aviation Administration contacted Lakemaid and told the company to stop. Unfortunately for Lakemaid fans and anyone else dreading a walk to the corner store, it´s currently against the law to fly drones for commercial

The Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund filed receipts of over $4 million and disbursements of $3.8 million leaving a little over $1 million cash on hand at the end of 2013, Roll Call reported. Almost $3 million came from donors who gave $200 or less each. The largest donor, Cary Katz, CEO of College Loan

TOLEDO, Ohio - A group of birding enthusiasts hopes a decision to halt plans for a wind turbine at an Ohio National Guard base will send a message to developers proposing other wind power projects along Lake Erie. Federal officials sent notice this past week that they are pulling back from building the proposed wind turbine just weeks after two organizations threatened to take legal action. The American Bird Conservancy and the Black Swamp Bird Observatory argued that the wind turbine would endanger migrating birds and bald eagles while also violating several federal laws designed to protect those birds.
