GOP: 4 bipartisan House bills all

You may not have been thinking about it at the time, but on Tuesday, when the president was delivering the State of the Union, we were observing a tradition prescribed by our Constitution. All branches of government and all walks of life gathering round in the people’s House. It is democracy at its finest. But these blessings do come with responsibilities. The Constitution also requires the president and Congress to heed the will of you, the people, and work together to carry out the business of the country. So in that spirit, Republicans identified 4 areas of bipartisanship.

Last week The New Yorker ran a lengthy profile of Barack Obama in which you can hear the president´s opinions on everything from marijuana legalization to war to racism. Obama is as thoughtful as ever, and I expect that admiration for his thoughtfulness will grow as the ages pile upon us. I have tried to get my head around what he represents. Two years ago, I would have said that whatever America´s roots in white supremacy, the election of a black president is a real thing, worthy of celebration, a sign of actual progress. I would have pointed out that

During the 1956 presidential campaign, an enthusiastic supporter called out to the Democratic candidate, Adlai Stevenson: "Senator, you have the vote of every thinking person. Stevenson wistfully called back: "That´s not enough, madam, we need a majority!" Once known as the "silent majority," now as the nation´s "low-information voters," these citizens perform their civic duty on election day. But they have no real clue for whom or what they are voting. Yes, when it comes to their occupational callings, investment, or sport picks, they may be highly rational. It´s just politics and public affairs that hold no interest for them. It

Dear Reader (Including the growing number of you who don’t want this “news”letter to be a safe place where you can share things), Here’s something I don’t say everyday: Capitalism ain’t all that. Don’t get me wrong. I’m still the artist behind the spoken-word album, Capitalism Is My Bag, Baby. But here’s the problem. Because most people on the right love and respect capitalism and pretty much everyone on the right feels the very real need to defend capitalism from the Occupiers, technocrats, sans-culottes, nudgers, equalizers, faux pragmatists, and other members of the Social Justice League, we don’t spend enough time focusing

Some Republican establishment operatives and their big donors want former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney to run again in 2016--but they won´t go on record with their comments. An anonymous establishment operative told left-wing BuzzFeed that the 2016 GOP field, which is considered as strong as 2012´s was weak, has "gotten so bad" from the establishment´s point of view that donors are "looking back fondly on the good old days of 2012." “You know what a lot of them say to me? I think we need Mitt back," the anonymous source told the liberal outlet. A recent poll of 2016 presidential primary voters

On Wednesday, Mitch McConnell told Fox News´ Megyn Kelly that the Obama administration is "initiating a new rule through the Treasury Department in the IRS to quiet the voices of outside groups." According to McConnell, the new rule would redefine what groups like the Tea Party could advocate, during a political campaign "to silence the voices of their critics going into this important fall election by using the Treasury Department regulations." This Obama strategy apparently grew out of one of the many lies both IRS witnesses and Democratic members of the Congressional Oversight Committee used to explain away delays in granting

On his nightly radio show the evening of the State of the Union address, conservative host Mark Levin, author of The Liberty Amendments, instructed the House of Representatives on how to confront President Obama’s declaration that he would be using further executive orders and other means to get around Congress when the legislative body fails to enact the type of legislation he desires. Levin said: The House of Representatives should, post-haste, pass a simple but blunt resolution, as follows: Whereas the President of the United States has exerted executive powers not granted to him under the United States Constitution, the United States House

Barack Obama announced in his 2014 State of the Union Address that he intends to bypass Congress "whenever and wherever" to achieve his extreme left-wing goals. Evidently, Obama intends to govern by executive orders (EO´s). EO´s are usually defined as directives that either implement or interpret a federal law, a constitutional provision, or a treaty. Obama has threatened to issue executive orders to make policy, a different use of them. A recent Washington Post/ABC News poll (1/20-23/14) found that 52% of the public approve of a president´s use of EO´s, while 46% oppose. Opinions about EO´s are highly dependent on partisanship. Holder’s junkyard attack dog and the velvet fixer of President Obama’s thorniest political problems. Mr. D´Souza very well may be guilty of a few winks and nods that wound up violating limits on campaign contributions he was allowed to make to a friend running a long-shot campaign for the Senate. Hi, everybody. This week, I delivered my State of the Union Address. Today, here’s the three-minute version. After four years of economic growth with eight million new private sector jobs, our unemployment rate is the lowest it’s been in more than five years. And with the economy speeding up, companies say they intend to hire more people this year. But while those at the top are doing better than ever, average wages have barely budged.

Through the course of thirty-five years of practicing psychology, I have come to believe that the key to happiness and success in life resides in the power of valuation. True valuation is the ability to recognize the most important value in every circumstance and to behave in order to actualize that value. The happiest people automatically recognize and act upon true values. Applied psychology has not fulfilled its potential to make the world a better place because it has not focused on the powers of valuation. America´s happiness and success as a nation have resulted from the one-pointed emphasis on the

Out of the Republican retreat on Maryland’s Eastern shore comes word that the House leadership is raising the white flag of surrender on immigration. The GOP will agree to halt the deportation of 12 million illegal aliens and sign on to a blanket amnesty. It only asks that the 12 million not be put on a path to citizenship. Sorry, but losers do not dictate terms. Rich Trumka of the AFL-CIO says amnesty is no longer enough. Illegal aliens must be put on a path to citizenship and given green cards to work – and join unions.

In what is taking shape as a sort of Great Awakening, state legislators have begun to learn that they hold equal status with Congress when it comes to proposing amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Indeed, a handful of state legislators from each state, as yet unknown, are destined for the annals of American history the moment the nation´s first Convention for Proposing Amendments is gaveled to order. The process, found in Article V of the U.S. Constitution, requires the legislatures of at least two thirds (34) of the states to pass resolutions demanding that Congress call a "Convention for Proposing Amendments"

I just read Peggy Noonan’s most recent column and she writes about something we have been concerned about for a long time. There is something very wrong with America. Americans feel less like citizens, and more like subjects. We are dictated to, not consulted. We are told to get in line, or feel the wrath of the state. Washington is a den of power seekers and power mongers. It probably always has been. The difference now is the size of the machine. Leviathan has grown in such size and power that unlike in past generations it can’t be ignored. It dominates

Argentina’s luck is finally starting to run out. It devalued its currency by 15 percent last week, marking the beginning of a possible economic crisis of the kind Argentina has become known for. Argentina’s problem is that it has followed the logic of populism for more than a decade and President Cristina Kirchner is showing no interest in changing course. In the 1990s Argentina combined far-reaching but sometimes flawed market-reforms with irresponsible fiscal policies, culminating in its 2002 default on $81 billion in debt—the largest sovereign default in history. The country delinked its currency from the dollar, experienced a severe economic

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) announced Friday that throughout 2013 his three campaign arms raised $4.16 million. Cruz made the massive haul over 2013 through his re-election committee, Ted Cruz for Senate, his joint fundraising committee, Ted Cruz Victory Committee, and his leadership PAC, the Jobs, Growth & Freedom Fund. About $1.5 million of this fundraising happened in the fourth quarter of 2013. This began during the government shutdown caused by Democrats’ and President Obama’s refusal to compromise on Obamacare after Cruz’s stand, with Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) at his side, against the unpopular healthcare law. Conventional wisdom inside the beltway was that

Try an anti-school choice union and a big bureaucracy. It actually happened at Uintah Elementary School in the Salt Lake City school district. The story from the embattled school administrators is that a "child nutrition manager" sought to correct the arrears of parents´ payments to their subsidized lunch program ($2.50 a day) and, after giving a day´s notice, had food service workers yank the trays of served food right out of the children´s little
