Ann Romney joined Fox News Channel host Bill Hemmer on Friday to discuss the recently released Netflix documentary about her husband and former Republican presidential nominee, Mitt Romney. She said that she always believed that her husband would be elected president and was shocked that he was not. When asked to comment on the state of President Barack Obama’s presidency, she refused to comment but noted that “the country lost” when they did not elect Mitt Romney in 2012. “I really believe this,” Ann Romney said, “We lost, but truly the country lost by not having Mitt as president.”

Justin Bieber’s personal plane — headed to New Jersey for the Super Bowl — was held at Teterboro Airport on Friday afternoon under suspicion it was carrying marijuana, law enforcement sources said. The plane had just arrived at 2:53 p.m. from Toronto when authorities detected what was described as a strong odor of pot. The plane, believed to be a twin-jet Raytheon Hawker 800, was ordered held until drug-sniffing dogs could check it out. It was not clear if Bieber was aboard. The singer planned to fly from his native Canada so he could take in the Super Bowl and pre-game festivities.

Keystone XL oil pipeline clears

WASHINGTON- The long-delayed Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada moved a significant step toward completion Friday as the State Department raised no major environmental objections to its construction. The finding is likely to be welcomed by Republicans and some oil- and gas-producing states but is sure to further rankle environmentalists already at odds with President Barack Obama over his energy policy. The department report stops short of recommending approval of the $7 billion pipeline, which has become a major symbol of the political debate over climate change. But the review gives Obama political cover if he chooses to endorse the

Abramson: National security reporting

New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson said Thursday that national security reporting is "effectively being criminalized" under President Obama, citing his administration´s aggressive pursuit of whistleblowers. Speaking on a panel at Columbia University, Abramson said the crackdown "has had a profound effect on journalists who cover national security." “This seems to be, if not a stated policy, a reality where journalism about sensitive national security issues, that I see as vitality in the public interest, is effectively being criminalized, and a real freeze is setting in to what had been up to this point a healthy discourse between sources and journalists,"

State Department officials said they were still weighing whether or not to reject the proposed Keystone XL pipeline even after Friday’s release of a final environmental assessment that concluded the project’s construction would not significantly alter global greenhouse gas emissions. “Approval or denial of any one crude oil transport project, including the proposed Project, remains unlikely to significantly impact the rate of extraction in the oil sands, or the continued demand for heavy crude oil at refineries in the United States,” the new environmental report said.

Radio and TV personality Glenn Beck says he has buried the hatchet with fellow conservative talk radio powerhouses Sean Hannity and Mark Levin and that they are coming together to activate their “Wonder Twin powers.” Beck spoke about his relationship with the two rival radio show hosts on his show Thursday, saying that they have discovered they were being fed “lies” about each other to diminish their power. “There is a stupid feud, and the three of us, Sean and Mark and I, have talked about it and we know where it came from and we know who was feeding

The most recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey is filled with ominous news for the president. It’s not simply that the president’s approval ratings are near all-time lows for him in this particular poll (43 approve v. 51 disapprove). Or that for the third-straight survey those who view Obama negatively (44 percent) outnumber those who view him positively (42 percent). It’s also the sour and anxious mood of the nation. Nearly 70 percent of those surveyed (68 percent) believe the country has either gotten worse or stayed stagnant during the Obama era. Fifty-nine percent say they are either “pessimistic and

Last year, Bill Maher embraced March Madness by holding his own competitive bracket for the country’s “craziest congressman.” This year, he’s actually going to try to take one of them down. On tonight’s episode of HBO’s Real Time, Maher plans to announce a viewer poll that will determine the worst sitting member of Congress. Then will actively do whatever he can to get them voted out of office this fall. “This year, we are going to be entering into the exciting world of outright meddling with the political process,” Maher told The New York Times about the plan. “There are a

President Obama has just announced the creation of a new program, which he calls myRA, as part of an overarching agenda he’s implementing, which could well be called myConstitution. Under the heading “Year of Action: Making Progress Through Executive Action,” the White House announced January 29 that Obama is using “his executive authority to direct the Department of the Treasury to create ‘myRA’—a new simple, safe and affordable ‘starter’ retirement savings account.” Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, Obama’s former chief of staff, says the accounts are “modeled on the Roth IRA.”

Is the GOP deliberately trying to

After this week’s GOP State of the Union response, it has become undeniable that someone (everyone?) in the Republican machine has no idea what they’re doing, and that is the generous assessment. The other option is that Republican leadership is deliberately sabotaging the midterm elections. For those of us who understand the imperative of conservative victory in November, it’s obvious the GOP must respond very differently to President Obama’s yearly circus act of the State of the Union. We’ve now learned he pretty much repeats what he said the year before, so responding to it isn’t exactly rocket science.

Some of Congress´ most conservative Republicans, who just months ago willingly shut down the government to try to get their way on Obamacare, had threatened to be just as disruptive in February when it came time to raise the nation´s debt ceiling. They planned to block the increase -- risking a government default -- unless President Obama and Senate Democrats made unspecified concessions. With Obama refusing to negotiate at all, both sides braced for yet another partisan crisis. Then suddenly, the chances of a fight appeared to be fading. Republican leaders indicated that they would not allow February to pass without raising the debt ceiling.

Earlier this month, I wrote about how North Carolina cut off its extended unemployment benefits in July, only to see its job market take off in the months afterward. As the new Labor Department state employment data from last week reaffirm, the cuts don´t seem to have hurt the state´s economy at all, and might have even helped encourage job-seekers to take what was available. This reality did not prevent President Obama from calling on Congress in Tuesday´s State of the Union to extend benefits, prolonging the six-year “emergency” measure.

In one of the most quoted lines of a tepid State of the Union address, President Obama implored Congress to “give America a raise” by increasing the federal minimum wage. Obama was proud enough of the line to make it a regular catchphrase as he took his populist message on the road. “Americans overwhelmingly agree [that] nobody who works full-time should ever have to raise a family in poverty,” he said at a Costco in Lanham, Md. “And that is why I firmly believe it’s time to give America a raise.”

President Obama on Friday formally announced a deal with some of the nation’s largest companies to institute new hiring practices that do not “disadvantage” those who have been jobless for several months or longer. The new initiative, agreed to by more than 300 businesses including giants such AT&T, Apple, Wal-Mart, Ford and others, also will extend to the federal government and its interview processes. In a speech at the White House, the president again called on Congress to pass an extension of long-term jobless benefits for the more than 1 million Americans who lost them late last year, but while lawmakers remain

At least five hotels near the Super Bowl stadium and the office of former mayor Rudy Giuliani have received envelopes containing a suspicious white powder, authorities have said. The FBI and other law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the potential targets; initial reports said that three New Jersey hotels found envelopes but now it has increased to at least five. But New Jersey Mayor James Cassella told CNN on Friday afternoon that the fire chief says one letter has been tested - and it only contained cornstarch. Late yesterday the House released the framework for an immigration overhaul, which includes amnesty for people brought here illegally by their parents when they were children. As usual, the outline (which will be used to develop legislation) is full of promises for border security first, with a fix in the immigration system second. Here are the details: {SNIP}Sound familiar? Let´s take a look back at the main points in last year´s Senate Gang of Eight legislation, which failed because it did not sufficiently enforce border security

Timidity as biography. Real message? “PLEASE LIKE ME!!!!” Cathy McMorris Rodgers is doubtless a terrific person. But alas? Alas, the Congresswoman botched her speech. Before she delivered her speech answering President Obama’s State of the Union address, perhaps she should have spent some time dipping into Sean Hannity’s Conservative Solutions. But instead? America learned Cathy McMorris Rodgers had a baby eight weeks ago.Good for her. But…really? As part of the official response to the State of the Union? Yes, this particular speech is always a problem. The response never can match the majesty of the President in the majestic House Chamber surrounded by pomp and ceremony.
