How to debunk the ‘war on women’

What is it about women that causes leading Republicans to grow clumsy, if not stupid? When even savvy, fluent, attractively populist Mike Huckabee stumbles, you know you’ve got trouble. Having already thrown away eminently winnable Senate seats in Missouri and Indiana because of moronic talk about rape, the GOP might have learned. You’d think. Huckabee wasn’t quite as egregious, just puzzling and a bit weird. Trying to make a point about Obamacare mandating free contraceptives, he inexplicably began speculating that the reason behind the freebie was the Democrats’ belief that women need the federal government to protect them from their

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) used an executive order to strip the name “Common Core” from the state’s new math and reading standards for public schools. In the Hawkeye State, the same standards are now called “The Iowa Core.” And in Florida, lawmakers want to delete “Common Core” from official documents and replace it with the cheerier-sounding “Next Generation Sunshine State Standards.” In the face of growing opposition to the Common Core State Standards — a set of K-12 educational guidelines adopted by most of the country — officials in a handful of states are worried that the brand is

Some Republicans See Racism As

WASHINGTON — For more than a year House Republican leaders have insisted the chamber would act on new immigration laws. And for more than a year, Republicans have done virtually nothing on the issue — despite intense pressure from activists, business groups, and the nation’s changing demographics. And although there are a variety of reasons for inaction, one Republican lawmaker recently offered a frank acknowledgement that for many House Republicans, there’s one issue at play that’s not often discussed: race. “Part of it, I think — and I hate to say this, because these are my people — but I hate to

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) thinks that the House GOP leadership’s renewed push this week to grant amnesty to illegal aliens would destroy the Republican Party’s chances at retaking the Senate in 2014. Cruz questioned how establishment Republicans unilaterally caving to Democrats on everything from the farm bill to the budget to the debt ceiling and more could think amnesty is a good idea at this time. "Right now, Republican leadership in both chambers is aggressively urging members to stand down on virtually every front: on the continuing resolution, on the budget, on the farm bill, on the debt ceiling,” Cruz

The widow of a Philadelphia police officer gunned down by man whose lawyer has been picked by President Obama for a top civil rights post says she wants to testify at his confirmation hearing. Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, told the Senate Judiciary Committee Thursday that he backed Maureen Faulkner’s request to speak at Debo Adegbile’s nomination hearing. “She has requested that she be given the opportunity to be heard before the committee,” Grassley said. “I think it’s a reasonable request and I support it.” Adegbile has been described by critics as “radical,” “dangerous” and “outside the mainstream.” Obama nominated Adegbile

Two Norwegian politicians say they have jointly nominated the former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden for the 2014 Nobel peace prize. The Socialist Left party politicians Baard Vegar Solhjell, a former environment minister, and Snorre Valen said the public debate and policy changes in the wake of Snowden´s whistleblowing had "contributed to a more stable and peaceful world order". Being nominated means Snowden will be one of scores of names that the Nobel committee will consider for the prestigious award. The five-member panel will not confirm who has been nominated but those who submit nominations sometimes make them public. Nominators, including members of

Deputies arrested Jed Udall, 26, of Eldorado Springs, on suspicion of four counts of first-degree trespassing and a single count possession of a controlled substance, the Boulder Daily Camera reported. He was booked and released from jail on $1,500 bond and is due back in court on Feb. 20, the report said. “Maggie and I are deeply distressed to learn of our son’s arrest,” the senator said in a statement. “We love our son and stand with him in his

It’s all about the Benjamins. An international counterfeiting ring has been pumping millions of dollars in phony $100 bills into New York and other cities in the metropolitan area over the past several years, forcing the Secret Service to step up its operation to shut it down, sources told "On The Inside." Federal officials are tracking the mules who smuggle bogus bills into the country and distributing an alert to New York businesses, banks and security industry personnel that teaches how to detect the fake C-notes, a copy of which DNAinfo New York obtained. In making the announcement, which he said he hoped would end a turbulent chapter in the city’s racial history, Mr. de Blasio offered a sweeping repudiation of the aggressive policing practices that had been a hallmark of his predecessor, Michael R. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) revised his previous assessment that once the government subsidies kicked in, it would be “ impossible to repeal Obamacare” because Americans would become “addicted to the sugar.” “We are seeing the fruits of the battle that so many millions of Americans engaged in last fall to stop Obamacare, and I think the direct result of that fight was to elevate the national debate over the harms that Obamacare has caused,” Cruz said

The Republican suicide

The Republicans are said to be looking for “something big” to smooth the rough places in the path to November, to make life easy and comfortable for incumbents, something to get that infernal racket of the guns out of their ears. Politics can be so fatiguing. Suicide is “something big,” so they’re thinking about it. Surrender and suicide comes easy for certain Republicans, particularly when it’s surrender to greed and avarice. If you can wrap avarice in a little piety, it’s easier still. SAN FRANCISCO — Amazon investors might have finally heard the news they have been waiting for: The retailer is raising shipping fees. Amazon has 237 million active customers but as a general rule makes almost no profit. Thursday’s announcement that the company was considering raising prices by as much as 50 percent on its $79 Prime shipping program could mean $500 million for its skimpy bottom line. “This is the first time we’ve ever seen Amazon flex its muscles in terms of pricing,” said Gene Munster, an analyst with Piper Jaffray. “It’s hugely significant.”

The agency also failed to meet its targets for reducing transport and travel emissions. Sepa chief executive James Curran said he understood that the Scottish Government’s environment agency must set a “strong example” to the public and businesses, but added: “We are

President Obama today lauded retiring 20-term Rep. Over the course of 40 years in Congress, their grandson has fought to give every American family that same chance,” Obama said in a statement. “Thanks to Henry’s leadership, Americans breath cleaner air, drink cleaner water, eat safer food, purchase safer products, and, finally, have access to quality, affordable healthcare.” “Today,

What did I write yesterday about how the Republicans should handle immigration reform this year? Do the TV dream sequence thingy: Instead of offering Ryan’s plan or the Senate plan, Republicans should be arguing that the president and party of healthcare “reform” — Obamacare — are not competent to handle immigration reform, and cannot be trusted to live within whatever law is passed. Perhaps the senator from Florida is listening. Rubio said doubts about Obama and his team colored his conversations with lawmakers he had hoped to persuade to back the immigration overhaul, now stalled in the House. “The central impediment to making progress

The term “cherry-picking” is often applied to the practice of presidents who use inaccurate, narrowly drawn, fuzzy statistics and claims to cover up their economic failures. President Obama did a lot of it in his fact-challenged, State of the Union address Tuesday night, in which he made exaggerated claims that do not stand up to serious scrutiny. The Washington Post ran a story the next morning by the capital’s chief fact-checker, Glenn Kessler, under this headline: “Sifting through some questionable claims by the president.” The Associated Press ran a lengthy fact-checking story, too, with this editor’s note at the bottom:

Cambridge, MD. -- The House Republican leadership, meeting here at the party´s winter retreat, kept its new immigration reform "principles" as secret as nuclear codes. Old immigration hands on the Hill, who might have been expected to play a big part in producing the document, were barely consulted. When Speaker John Boehner´s office wanted a knowledgeable Hill staffer to take a look at the work in progress, the person was invited into a room to examine a draft -- no copying or note-taking allowed. And the paper remained a mystery to almost all GOP lawmakers until Boehner unveiled it at

That is up from the 0.02 percent of the total electricity supply that solar power sources provided in 2008, the last calendar year before Obama took office. “Now, one of the biggest factors in bringing more jobs back is our commitment to American energy,” Obama said in the State of the Union. “The all-of-the-above energy strategy I announced a

Environmentalists are rallying to the defense of an anti-fracking activist who has advocated pedophilia and incest after a Pennsylvania court barred her from entering any land owned or leased by a local oil company. Cabot Oil and Gas won a temporary injunction this week prohibiting Vera Scroggins, director of the anti-fracking group Citizens for Clean Water, from setting foot on any portion of the 200,000 acres of land for which Cabot holds leases. Cabot claims Scroggins was endangering herself and others by trespassing on the company’s land in the course of her activism. Scroggins denies the charge. Environmentalists quickly rushed

Is Eric Holder´s Justice Department driven by a political agenda, or are the department´s recent prosecutorial decisions simply signs of overzealousness? The Justice Department has focused on two prominent Republicans, announcing a corruption indictment of former Virginia Gov. Robert McDonnell and launching an active and very public criminal investigation into the antics of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie´s administration. In doing so, federal prosecutors have created at least the appearance that they are targeting two men who have been touted as plausible candidates for the GOP presidential nomination in 2016. A reading of the McDonnell indictment raises the obvious question of why

Health Care: A new survey shows that ObamaCare is less popular with the uninsured than with the public. How is this even possible? The January Kaiser Family Foundation health tracking poll shows that just 24% of the uninsured approve of ObamaCare. That´s down from 40% the month before the reform officially launched in October, and it´s a full 10 points below the public´s overall favorable rating. Incredibly, more than twice as many uninsured say they´re worse off because of ObamaCare than say it´s helped. What´s more, just 7% of the uninsured say they tried to get coverage through an ObamaCare exchange. Nearly

Hardly warp speed, but an Indy race car compared to the slow-motion rate since the recession officially ended. Even the better numbers, however, can´t mask the Obama growth deficit during this expansion. The Joint Economic Committee of Congress calculates that if the recovery over the past 4-1/2 years had been at just the normal pace of recoveries, the economy would be $1.3 trillion larger today. This is the Obama growth deficit, and it helps explain why half of Americans believe we´re still in
