On immigration, what do GOP House
leaders mean by ´enforcement triggers´?
Washington Examiner, by Byron York    Original Article

Cambridge, MD. -- The House Republican leadership, meeting here at the party´s winter retreat, kept its new immigration reform "principles" as secret as nuclear codes. Old immigration hands on the Hill, who might have been expected to play a big part in producing the document, were barely consulted. When Speaker John Boehner´s office wanted a knowledgeable Hill staffer to take a look at the work in progress, the person was invited into a room to examine a draft -- no copying or note-taking allowed. And the paper remained a mystery to almost all GOP lawmakers until Boehner unveiled it at

Solar power, which President Barack Obama promoted in his State of the Union Address, accounted for 0.2 percent of the U.S. electricity supply in the first nine months of 2013, according to data published by the U.S. government´s Energy Information Administration. That is up from the 0.02 percent of the total electricity supply that solar power sources provided in 2008, the last calendar year before Obama took office. “Now, one of the biggest factors in bringing more jobs back is our commitment to American energy,” Obama said in the State of the Union. “The all-of-the-above energy strategy I announced a

Environmentalists are rallying to the defense of an anti-fracking activist who has advocated pedophilia and incest after a Pennsylvania court barred her from entering any land owned or leased by a local oil company. Cabot Oil and Gas won a temporary injunction this week prohibiting Vera Scroggins, director of the anti-fracking group Citizens for Clean Water, from setting foot on any portion of the 200,000 acres of land for which Cabot holds leases. Cabot claims Scroggins was endangering herself and others by trespassing on the company’s land in the course of her activism. Scroggins denies the charge. Environmentalists quickly rushed

Justice Goes After the GOP
Wall Street Journal, by Harvey Silverglate    Original Article

Is Eric Holder´s Justice Department driven by a political agenda, or are the department´s recent prosecutorial decisions simply signs of overzealousness? The Justice Department has focused on two prominent Republicans, announcing a corruption indictment of former Virginia Gov. Robert McDonnell and launching an active and very public criminal investigation into the antics of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie´s administration. In doing so, federal prosecutors have created at least the appearance that they are targeting two men who have been touted as plausible candidates for the GOP presidential nomination in 2016. A reading of the McDonnell indictment raises the obvious question of why

Barbra Streisand, Tim Robbins and other progressive stars helped First Lady Michelle Obama fill Democrat coffers yesterday to keep both the House and Senate out of the GOP´s mitts. The L.A. fundraiser, held at the home of Everybody Loves Raymond creator Phil Rosenthal, also included James Brolin, Paul Reiser, Dolores Roberts and L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti. The event netted $700,000 for the liberal cause. The First Lady did the political heavy lifting, scaring the soiree attendees by saying the GOP could not only keep the house later this year but win back the Senate. What I want all of you

Why Do The Uninsured Hate ObamaCare?

Health Care: A new survey shows that ObamaCare is less popular with the uninsured than with the public. How is this even possible? The January Kaiser Family Foundation health tracking poll shows that just 24% of the uninsured approve of ObamaCare. That´s down from 40% the month before the reform officially launched in October, and it´s a full 10 points below the public´s overall favorable rating. Incredibly, more than twice as many uninsured say they´re worse off because of ObamaCare than say it´s helped. What´s more, just 7% of the uninsured say they tried to get coverage through an ObamaCare exchange. Nearly

Economy: The good news from Thursday´s GDP report is that growth for the second half of 2013 topped 3.5%. Hardly warp speed, but an Indy race car compared to the slow-motion rate since the recession officially ended. Even the better numbers, however, can´t mask the Obama growth deficit during this expansion. The Joint Economic Committee of Congress calculates that if the recovery over the past 4-1/2 years had been at just the normal pace of recoveries, the economy would be $1.3 trillion larger today. This is the Obama growth deficit, and it helps explain why half of Americans believe we´re still in

Immigration: Seeking Hispanic votes they´ll never get, Republicans might well ruin what could be one of their greatest electoral triumphs ever. Cheap labor now isn´t worth a permanent socialist electorate tomorrow. ´Those are my principles," Groucho Marx once said, "and if you don´t like them? Well, I have others." Business should stand for the rule of law. It should also stand for sustaining economic liberty in America´s long-term future. Both principles argue against amnesty for America´s estimated 11 million illegal aliens, which would reward them for violating the law and let them pull the U.S. electorate still further to the left. Hype is natural to Super Bowl and State of the Union warm-ups. But neither Super Bowl contender seeks to change the rules of the game to improve their odds. Enter Obama. With the ObamaCare albatross threatening to take Democrats down to defeat, President Obama seeks a game-changer: keeping his opposition (Congress) off the playing field so he faces no defense — checks and balances — to stop his illegal plays and unconstitutional face-masking. He´ll "go it alone," "assert a unilateral agenda," "tackle public policy issues without congressional action," screamed the headlines and the pundits before the State of the Union. Obama himself

Let’s see if we can dial in to Republican establishment logic: (a) An effort to use the Republican-controlled House’s constitutional prerogative not to fund Obamacare (a program Republicans claim to want to repeal) that prompts President Obama and congressional Democrats to shut down the government rather than negotiate concessions (notwithstanding that Obama is simultaneously and unconstitutionally ordering concessions by executive fiat) is a reckless, counterproductive strategy because riveting the public’s attention to the harm that will be done by Obamacare somehow detracted the public’s attention from the disastrous roll-out of Obamacare. However … (b) Now, with the Obamacare debacle getting worse by the

For a week leading up to the president’s Tuesday address, White House advisers were trying out yet another new catchphrase, telling any reporter they could find that President Barack Obama had discovered he had “a phone and a pen,” and he intended to use them in the year ahead. Up until now, apparently, the president has been relying on the quill and telegraph Rutherford B. Hayes left behind, so this is kind of a breakthrough. This pen-and-phone business represents a pretty stunning admission from a president five years into his term – that he and his senior aides are still

Gradual exposure to peanut protein powder over six months helped more than half of kids with peanut allergies learn to tolerate the equivalent of about 10 peanuts per day, according to the results of a new clinical trial. The Phase 2 trial also found that the overwhelming majority of kids who tested the experimental therapy were able to eat the equivalent of about five peanuts each day without having an allergic reaction. This led to significant improvements in the quality of life for the families of these children, according to a report published Thursday by the Lancet. Experts estimate that 15

House GOP leaders on Thursday released the following one-page document outlining their “standards for immigration reform”: PREAMBLE Our nation’s immigration system is broken and our laws are not being enforced. Washington’s failure to fix them is hurting our economy and jeopardizing our national security. The overriding purpose of our immigration system is to promote and further America’s national interests and that is not the case today. The serious problems in our immigration system must be solved, and we are committed to working in a bipartisan manner to solve them. But they cannot be solved with a single, massive piece of legislation that

Here’s a quick, early read-out of the immigration discussion at the House retreat, which was still ongoing as of 20 minutes ago, from one source in the room. Boehner made a brief presentation that hewed to the principles that have been released. He gave the impression, at least to this observer, that he’s not committed. He said there’s been no decision to take anything to the floor, but he is absolutely opposed to a conference with the Senate on the Gang of Eight bill. The House members seemed to break down into roughly thirds: those who like the principles and

The position was included in a document released by party leaders during their annual retreat in Maryland. Instead, it said immigrants living here illegally could remain and live legally if they pass background checks, pay fines and back taxes, learn to speak English and understand U.S. civics, and can support themselves without access to
