As if her otherworldly beauty and screen presence were not enough, here is another reason to love Scarlett Johansson: Oxfam, of which she was an ambassador, hinted that she should cut her ties with SodaStream on the basis that it maintains factories in Israeli settlements and she responded by cutting her ties with Oxfam! What’s not to love about this story? [Snip] But instead the celeb basically tells the worthy charity to get stuffed and says she will carry on working with and promoting the Israeli company. Ever since she was signed up as the face of SodaStream, Ms Johansson

A shocking video shows a teacher helplessly stuck in the middle of a classroom fight - with no one coming to her aid. The footage, recorded by a teenage boy in the class at Gibbs High School in St Petersburg, Florida, shows two young girls exchanging a war of words with their classmates egging them on. The female teacher initially stands between the girls, trying to get them to calm down, but then the students start lashing out at each other - and she can do nothing but stand back and watch. Other students clear tables to make way for

Sandra Fluke, who became an instant celebrity when she was denied the opportunity to testify at an all-male hearing on Obamacare’s contraception requirements, is “strongly considering” a bid for Rep. Henry Waxman’s congressional seat, according to KPCC, a Southern California radio station. “I’m flattered that I’m being discussed as a potential candidate,” she told the station. “A number of folks I respect very deeply have reached out today and encouraged me to run. I am strongly considering running.”

[Breaking news update at 4:00 p.m. ET] An Italian appeals court convicted former exchange student Amanda Knox and her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito on murder charges Thursday night. Prosecutors said the couple had killed Meredith Kercher in 2007. They were convicted two years later of murder, but those charges were overturned on appeal in 2011. It is unlikely Knox, who lives in Seattle, Washington, will return to Italy to serve additional prison time because U.S. law dictates that a person cannot be tried twice on the same charge, a legal expert tells CNN.

One day before President Barack Obama announced he was boosting the minimum wage from $7.25-an-hour to $10.10 an hour, at Tuesday’s State of the Union address, the Liberal Ontario Government announced a coming increase to Ontario’s minimum wage. Talk about global government by coordination! Ontario may be a long way from Washington, D.C., but the ties that bind between here and DC are family tight. Ontario Liberal MPP and Deputy Speaker Bas Balkissoon—who posted the coming Ontario Minimum Wage boost on his personal website—is the father-in-law of Valerie Jarrett’s daughter, Laura who is married to Balkissoon’s son, Tony, both lawyers having met at

All four counts are felonies. When it comes to portraits, a gauzy look can be a welcome thing for people of a certain age. But politics takes place in an unforgiving spotlight, as Texas Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Wendy Davis discovered when the Dallas Morning News exposed discrepancies in her oft-told tale of bootstrapping her way from single motherhood in a Fort Worth trailer park to graduating from Harvard Law School. That narrative has been central to Davis’ appeal as she seeks to translate the national attention from her marathon filibuster in defense of abortion rights last year into votes for her underdog candidacy this year.

Federal prosecutors will seek the death penalty against accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, U.S. Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz announced today. The much-anticipated decision by Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. comes months after Ortiz´s office made a top-secret recommendation on whether they would seek capital punishment against Tsarnaev, who authorities say planned and carried out the attack that killed three and injured more than 260 on April 15. "Today, United States Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. authorized the government to seek the death penalty in the case of United States v. Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev," Ortiz said in a

Obama MyRA proposal unlikely

President Obama´s plan to tackle the U.S. retirement crisis is ambitious and well-intentioned but unlikely to have much of an effect, experts say. In his State of the Union address, Obama proposed a new type of retirement account for the 4 in 10 Americans who don´t have access to 401(k) plans at their jobs. The accounts, dubbed MyRA, would offer guaranteed investment returns, no fees and tax-free profits. But Obama´s proposal rests on a pair of uncertain assumptions: that employers would be willing to offer the accounts and that financially stretched low-income workers would agree to participate in them.

WASHINGTON— Americans are among the least likely to be concerned about retirement security, or to view the growing number of older people as a major concern, a new global study finds. The analysis of surveys across 21 nations by the Pew Research Center is timely because it details some of the benefits of immigration as lawmakers in the U.S. debate an overhaul of immigration laws: higher population growth and a slower rate of population aging. The surveys found that people in nations where the population is aging less swiftly, such as the U.S., are less likely to be worried about

Remember that spiky-haired blonde fitness guru all over TV years ago? Her famous line was "Stop the insanity!" As a commonsense-thinking black conservative, I offer the same clarion call to fellow black Americans: "Stop the insanity!" Why do you continue sleeping with the enemy, voting for liberal Democrats whose policies imply that you are inferior, stupid, and culturally immoral? When the NAACP and Democrats claim that requiring a photo ID disenfranchises blacks, such implies we are stupid. For the life of me, I do not understand why millions of blacks are not highly insulted by this absurd claim. Do blacks fly?

TAMPA — A new Quinnipiac University poll shows Charlie Crist with a larger lead in the governor’s race than other recent polls at the same time the Crist campaign is leaking news he has hired a campaign manager with strong Tampa ties. The poll shows Crist up 46-38 percent over Republican Gov. Rick Scott, a contrast with two other recent polls that showed Crist clinging to narrow leads. With Rep. Henry Waxman´s retirement announcement, many of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi´s top lieutenants are abandoning ship. Waxman joins his California colleague, Rep. George Miller, and Rep. Jim Moran of Virginia as close Pelosi allies to retire after this Congress. And last July, Pelosi´s leading in-house strategist Jen Crider announced she was decamping from her office to work for Microsoft. Their decisions are as strong a signal as any that veteran House Democrats hold little hope of taking the House in 2014, and they probably are pessimistic about their long-term prospects for a congressional majority. Morning Joe debuted its “Super Bowl ad” Thursday morning, in which host Joe Scarborough is portrayed as the Most Interesting Morning Television Anchor in the Whole World. If you need to be told what it’s spoofing, there’s nothing Mediaite can do for you. The ad mostly makes light, no pun intended, of how early the show is. “I don’t often get up on time,” Scarborough said, “but when I do, I’m on Morning Joe. Stay sleepy, my friends.” The hosts joked that the ad would air during the second quarter of this weekend’s professional football championship, and had cost MSNBC

The day after he delivered the official tea party response to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union, Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) aggressively challenged Attorney General Eric Holder on the constitutional basis for the executive orders Obama announced in his speech. After questioning Holder about NSA surveillance programs, Lee moved on to discuss the president’s renewed efforts to bypass Congress with executive orders. He asked Holder specifically about the legal basis for the executive order that effectively delayed the Affordable Care Act’s employer mandate. “I’ll be honest with you, I have not seen — I don’t remember looking at or

A Gallup Poll in late January showed that more and more states are becoming Republican. Gallup tells us that 14 of the 50 states have a clear majority of respondents calling themselves "Republicans," and 17 of the 50 states have a clear majority of respondents calling themselves "Democrats." This, however, dramatically understates the growing Republican advantage in many states. The following 14 states are presented by Gallup as neither Democrat nor Republican: Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Kentucky, Missouri, Indiana, West Virginia, Iowa, Wisconsin and Ohio. Election results, however, suggest a strong Republican trend. State legislatures are the

Hearst Castle visitors will soon find dusty buses, dry fountains and an empty pool, thanks to one of the worst droughts in California history. Springs that supply the state historical monument are running at just one-sixth normal, said Nick Franco, superintendent of the San Luis Obispo Coast District of State Parks. Only 47,000 gallons a day now flow from the springs, which State Parks shares with the Hearst Ranch, down from a normal of 285,000 gallons a day in a normal year. That means a trio of reservoirs that typically are filled with 2.75 million gallons of water this time

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama calls it “wrong” and an “embarrassment” that women make 77 cents for every dollar a man makes, saying women deserve equal pay for equal work. “At a time when women make up about half of the workforce, but still make 77 cents for every dollar a man earns – we’ve got to finish the job and give women the tools they need to fight for equal pay,” Obama said Wednesday in Maryland, calling for an end to “workplace policies that belong in a ‘Mad Men’ episode.” His remarks echoed what he said the night before

An unhinged Brooklyn man accused of punching seven women — including a 78-year-old — in brutal “knockout” attacks last year told cops he attacked six of them in “self-defense,” and hit another woman because she almost made him spill his Dunkin’ Donuts coffee, court papers revealed Wednesday. Barry Baldwin, 35, hit the women in seven separate attacks in Canarsie and Midwood between Nov. 7 and Dec. 27, court papers state. His Jan. 3 arrest came in the midst of a slew of possible “knockout game” attacks — in which innocent people are sucker-punched by thrill-seeking punks — including multiple attacks against Orthodox
