INDIANAPOLIS — A contentious bill to screen welfare recipients for drug abuse and limit residents to buy only “nutritional” foods with food stamps is moving forward. State representatives voted 71-22 in favor of the bill Tuesday. The bill would require residents who receive money from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families to take a questionnaire screening for substance abuse and possibly face drug testing. The bill also would restrict what can be bought through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps. Recipients only would be able to purchase foods deemed “nutritional” by the state, which state Rep. Jud McMillin of Brookville

NEW YORK— Bill Clinton made major changes to his diet after heart trouble, and now his foundation is getting an honor for helping in the battle against heart disease. Women´s Day is holding its Red Dress Awards to promote heart health on Feb. 11, and the magazine will give The Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation an award for helping fight childhood obesity. The group works with schools nationwide to help students get better access to healthy food and exercise. Clinton famously changed his own diet after undergoing a quadruple bypass a decade ago. Look, I’m pretty neutral when it comes to this “War Over Who Is Waging a War on Women” thing. I’d say there’s a good amount of merit in suggesting the Republican Party is terrible when it comes to courting women and discussing women’s issues; but I’d also argue that plenty of Democratic policies have negative effects on women, too, however unintentional. Such is the peril of being a libertarian. Either way, one of the foremost activists in flagging the GOP’s shortcomings and patronizing attitude towards women has been MSNBC host Alex Wagner. And yet, during Cathy McMorris Rodgers‘ official GOP

WASHINGTON — The top U.S. intelligence official says a Syrian militant group tied to al-Qaida, the al-Nusra Front, aspires to attack the United States. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told the Senate Intelligence Committee Wednesday that such al-Qaida groups have started training camps "to train people to go back to their countries," and conduct more terrorist acts. Clapper says some 26,000 rebel fighters battling the government of Bashar Assad in Syria are extremists with about 7,000 of them foreigners from some 50 countries, including Europe. U.S. intelligence officials have said a handful of American foreign fighters, and hundreds of European militants have

Former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin said her impression of the State of the Union, gathered by listening on her truck radio and reading on her phone from kids’ ball games, is that the president’s “hubris” and “naivete” is “alarming.” Palin said she avoided watching the annual speech because it’s all been said before in a Facebook post Wednesday. “If you skipped huddling around the TV last night for the State of the Union address because you’ve heard it all before, plus you were just busy with life, well… so did I,” Palin wrote. “Putting the real world on hold

A Queens man was arrested Tuesday in connection with an attack on a gay journalist in New York City. Leighton Jennings, 24, of Jamaica, Queens, was charged with assault, according to a report from Pix 11 news. Award-winning journalist Randy Gener was punched in the face while he was walking home on Jan. 17 on West 54th Street in Manhattan. He underwent brain surgery as a result. Police said they were investigating the attack as a possible bias crime because his wallet was not stolen. However, Jennings has not yet been charged with a hate crime, the report said.

MSNBC’s newest host is picking up right where many of his predecessors left off. Ronan Farrow, the alleged youngest son of the late Frank Sinatra, sent a tweet from his personal account that is raising eyebrows across cyberspace and raising questions about the twenty-six year old TV host’s maturity. (Tweet) The tweet was allegedly an attempt at humor, based on a line from President Barack Obama’s State of the Union that described the physical challenges facing Army Sergeant First Class Cory Remsburg. “He still struggles from his left side,” the president said while describing the results of the grievous injuries

A “diminished leader.” “A study in scaled-down ambition.” “None too ambitious.” These are some of the reactions to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address on Tuesday night from prominent media outlets like the New York Times, POLITICO, and the National Journal. It’s not that agenda items the president articulated last night are so modest themselves, it’s simply that articulating the same agenda two years in a row with little to show in the way of progress is dispiriting. What seemed like an ambitious agenda in 2013 appears “scaled down” in light of the fact that much of it was never

In the next few days "The Monuments Men," directed by George Clooney and boasting an all-star cast, will be previewed in staid and upper-crust locations such as the National Gallery of Art and Harvard´s Kennedy School of Government before being released nationally on Feb. 7. This makes sense, for the film is about a small group of art professionals, many of them from Ivy League colleges and top U.S. museums, who, in the last days of the war and well after the surrender of Germany, secured and preserved millions of European cultural objects looted by the Nazis and returned them

This time, the billionaire real estate mogul, reality TV star and perennial self-promoter is toying with the idea of challenging New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, saying the state´s high taxes and tight gun-control laws make the Democratic incumbent vulnerable. Trump has met with Republican leaders and has pledged to spend tens of millions of dollars on a potential campaign, the same kind of motions he´s made once before for governor and several times for president over the years without ever actually jumping in. Read President Obama’s State of the Union version 6.0, and one theme comes into sharp relief: the bankruptcy of liberalism. President Obama’s speech asked for this and that, ranging from anti-obesity programs to gun control to a minimum wage for government contractors. It made open pleas for the support of different interest groups, including recent immigrants and women. It claimed achievements for which the White House was not responsible, such as the addition of millions of new jobs in the recovery and America’s growing energy independence. Obama’s State of the Union reads like a shopping list while those of earlier presidents

Cavuto asked Romney if that depicted Christie as a bully—a criticism he’s faced in recent weeks as details of the bridge and Sandy recovery funding scandals unfold--but Romney spun it as a positive trait. “No, I consider it to be a strong LBJ-type leadership style,” Romney replied. “I

The speech last night was depressing for its predictability, its lack of self-awareness, and its lack of solutions to help America get back on track. It was, however, stunning to listen to the president still trying to sell his misguided health-care law to the public as if nothing had happened. That takes some courage. Over at Forbes, Cato Institute’s Michael Cannon has a great piece that looks at the president’s statements about Obamacare. At least one part of Obama’s speech last night was both moving and fitting: I first met Cory Remsburg, a proud Army Ranger, at Omaha Beach on the 65th anniversary of D-Day. Along with some of his fellow Rangers, he walked me through the program – a strong, impressive young man, with an easy manner, sharp as a tack. We joked around, and took pictures, and I told him to stay in touch. A few months later, on his tenth deployment, Cory was nearly killed by a massive roadside bomb in Afghanistan. His comrades found him in a canal, face down, underwater,

It’s been overshadowed by the hoopla surrounding the State of the Union, but we have finally had an outbreak of bipartisanship in Washington. Of course, bipartisanship means, as it usually does, that Democrats and Republicans have teamed up to mug taxpayers: An agreement has finally been reached on a new farm bill. The farm bill will cost taxpayers about $950 billion over the next ten years. Lawmakers are calling this a $23 billion cut. But as Veronique de Rugy and my colleague Chris Edwards have pointed out, this is a cut only in the Washington sense of spending less than previously

ATLANTA — Students camped out with teachers in school gyms or on buses and commuters abandoned cars along the highway to seek shelter in churches, fire stations — even grocery stores — after a rare snowstorm left thousands of unaccustomed Southerners frozen in their tracks. Tuesday’s storm deposited mere inches of snow, barely enough to qualify as a storm up North. And yet it was more than enough to paralyze Deep South cities such as Atlanta and Birmingham, and strand thousands of workers who tried to rush home early only to never make it home at all.

The journalists include the Australian ex-BBC correspondent Peter Greste and Canadian-Egyptian bureau chief Mohamed Fahmy, who has worked for the New York Times. "Investigations showed the defendants created a media network headed by an Egyptian-Canadian Muslim Brotherhood member [Fahmy] that has specialised in creating video scenes contrary to reality and aired them through Qatari al-Jazeera English to distort Egypt´s international reputation," the prosecution alleged. It wasn´t clear exactly how many people were still stranded out on the roads nearly 24 hours after the storm slammed the Deep South on Tuesday. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said it was "a lot of people," and officials were working to get them food, water, gas and eventually a way home. The timing of when things would clear
