CAPE TOWN, South Africa — Oscar Pistorius´ murder trial will have a dedicated 24-hour television channel in South Africa, the country´s top cable provider said Wednesday, promising "round-the-clock" coverage of one of the blockbuster stories of the year. MultiChoice said in a statement the temporary "pop-up" channel will launch on March 2, the day before the double-amputee Olympian goes on trial in a high court in the capital, Pretoria, for killing his girlfriend in his home on Valentine´s Day last year. It is the first time it has launched a channel of this kind to cover "a major news event," MultiChoice said.

ATLANTA — Students camped out with teachers in school gyms or on buses and commuters abandoned cars along the highway to seek shelter in churches, fire stations — even grocery stores — after a rare snowstorm left thousands of unaccustomed Southerners frozen in their tracks. Tuesday’s storm deposited mere inches of snow, barely enough to qualify as a storm up North. And yet it was more than enough to paralyze Deep South cities such as Atlanta and Birmingham, and strand thousands of workers who tried to rush home early only to never make it home at all.

Egyptian prosecutors say they have charged 20 al-Jazeera journalists, including two British citizens, with belonging to Mohamed Morsi´s Muslim Brotherhood, fabricating news reports and tarnishing Egypt´s reputation abroad. The journalists include the Australian ex-BBC correspondent Peter Greste and Canadian-Egyptian bureau chief Mohamed Fahmy, who has worked for the New York Times. "Investigations showed the defendants created a media network headed by an Egyptian-Canadian Muslim Brotherhood member [Fahmy] that has specialised in creating video scenes contrary to reality and aired them through Qatari al-Jazeera English to distort Egypt´s international reputation," the prosecution alleged. Other charges included "disturbing public peace, instilling terror, harming the general

ATLANTA -- Students spent the night on buses or at schools, commuters abandoned their cars or idled in them all night and the highways-turned-parking lots iced over when a winter storm slammed the city, creating a treacherous traffic jam that lasted into Wednesday. It wasn´t clear exactly how many people were still stranded out on the roads nearly 24 hours after the storm slammed the Deep South on Tuesday. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said it was "a lot of people," and officials were working to get them food, water, gas and eventually a way home. The timing of when things would clear

LANHAM, Md. — President Barack Obama promoted his State of the Union proposals to boost personal finances of low-income Americans in a morning-after trip Wednesday to push Congress to pass a minimum wage hike for more than the small number of workers he can help on his own. “It’s time to give America a raise,” Obama said. Obama visited a Costco store in Prince George’s County to drive home the argument that businesses who pay higher wages can improve their bottom line. “I guarantee you if workers have a little more money in their pocket, they’ll spend more at Costco,” Obama

Vice President Joe Biden had another lovable gaffe Wednesday morning, confusing his cabinet-mate of three years Robert Gates with the mega-billionaire and Microsoft founder Bill Gates. When asked by NBC’s Savannah Guthrie about Gates’ recent criticisms of the Vice President, Joe responded, “Look, I like Bill Gates…I think he’s a man of great integrity as well. The fundamental problem here is Bill Gates and I have – Bob Gates – have disagreed on everything since Vietnam.” Gates, who served as Secretary of Defense from 2006-2011, wrote in his recently released book, Duty, that Biden has been wrong on “every foreign policy issue

The head of the union representing Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and staff issued a harsh rebuke to President Obama for having illegal immigrants in the chamber during his State of the Union address. “According to news accounts, the President has once again invited illegal immigrants to the State of the Union — and yet the President still refuses to meet with ICE officers,” National ICE Council head and ICE officer Chris Crane in a statement. “We have a President who will provide those illegally in the US with the seat of honor at one of the most important events of

A Los Angeles jury on Tuesday convicted state Sen. Roderick D. Wright on all eight counts in his perjury and voter fraud trial. The Inglewood Democrat was indicted by a Los Angeles County grand jury in September 2010. He had pleaded not guilty and said he thought he had been following the law in 2007 when he took steps to run for the seat he has held since late 2008. In a trial that began Jan. 8, prosecutors accused Wright of faking a move to a rental property he owned in Inglewood so he could run in what was then

When asked by CNSNews.com whether President Barack Obama has the constitutional authority to act on climate change without congressional authority, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said the president does not have that authority and relies on the complexity of legal challenges to his actions. CNSNews.com asked: “Does President Obama have the constitutional authority to act on climate change, for example, without congressional approval?” “I don’t believe so,” McCain said. “Certainly not the spirit of the Constitution and I think (he) violated the letters we’re finding out in the NLRB (National Labor Relations Board) case. “The problem is, the challenging of these actions takes

WASHINGTON — Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a leading Republican voice on immigration, suggested Wednesday that major legislation on the issue probably can´t be passed while President Obama is in the White House because of questions about his willingness to enforce all the provisions of a new law. "I don´t know if it´s going to happen this year; I don´t know if it´s going to happen with this administration," Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants, said at a breakfast with reporters hosted by The Wall Street Journal. President Obama’s State of the Union address is expected to lay out how he will “bypass Congress” by acting through executive orders to advance policies that he cannot get passed in the legislature. There is a major problem with this, familiar from high school civics: under the Constitution, Congress cannot be bypassed. Indeed, it plays the primary role in setting national policy. Yet despite the White House’s rhetoric, many of the policies discussed tonight may be constitutionally unproblematic. Here’s a rough test. The president can exercise some legislative powers when i) Congress has delegated such power to the president by statute

Holder’s junkyard attack dog and the velvet fixer of President Obama’s thorniest political problems. Mr. D´Souza very well may be guilty of a few winks and nods that wound up violating limits on campaign contributions he was allowed to make to a friend running a long-shot campaign for the Senate. Let´s face it, we´re stuck with Barack Obama for another three years. But that doesn´t mean we can´t dream of the alternatives. In a parallel dimension, President Michele Bachmann used the State of the Union to lay out her civil defence strategy for the End of Times. Newt Gingrich announced the first Walmart on the moon. And Mitt Romney told Congress, "You´re all fired." Ah, but the best president for a conservative to daydream about is surely Calvin Coolidge. Here´s a few reasons why. 1. He rarely spoke. Modern Presidents seem to love talking, but not Silent Cal. In fact

BOSTON — Tensions within the Democratic Party were on display in the living rooms of Massachusetts, where liberal activists watched President Barack Obama´s State of the Union address with skepticism. Like many in the party´s far-left wing, those who enjoyed pizza and beer at a Boston-area watch party Tuesday night have been disappointed by the president´s performance while facing a divided Congress. Some offered positive marks for his speech, but said that it did little to resurrect their once-passionate enthusiasm for the nation´s top Democrat. President Obama flexed executive muscle in his State of the Union address Tuesday, rolling out a series of unilateral actions in an attempt to reassert his standing in Washington and with the American public. Obama´s prime-time speech to millions of people came against the backdrop of the roughest stretch of his presidency. And eager to keep Americans from tuning him out, the president framed his executive orders as part of a “year of action” to boost job creation and combat income inequality.

As President Obama tries to deflect attention away from his failed foreign and domestic policies he´s bringing up the old class warfare issue in one of its stereotypical garbs: a raise in the minimum wage. It would be nice for everyone to earn more money, and sympathy can be gained by saying the least paid could benefit the most from a pay raise. But the question Obama and his media supporters flee from is a simple one: who pays? The jobs held by minimum wage earners are predominantly in service jobs, such as fast food franchises, and small business establishments. These businesses
