DENVER — Just a few miles from the midday bustle of this city’s hip downtown, a pen of black-hided yearlings trotted into a dusty arena, as a crowd of burly men in cowboy hats looked on silently. “I’m in the market for some heifers,” whispered one cattle rancher, eyeing the animals up and down. “If the price is right, I’ll be buying.” For more than a century now, the National Western Stock Show has been a proud totem of the old frontier — a place where rodeos, ranching and cowboys still live and breathe, even as Denver’s cow town roots have long

A massive steam locomotive known as Big Boy will roll out of Pomona’s Fairplex on Sunday morning on its way to restoration at Union Pacific’s rail yard in Cheyenne, Wyo., and its eventual return to rail tracks across America. Union Pacific crews will sever the Metrolink tracks shortly after midnight near the Fairplex Metrolink station and push the 600-ton locomotive on the main line, where it will be towed by modern diesel freight locomotives 56 miles to Colton as it is readied for its trip to Wyoming. Track crews will work under floodlights to restore the mainline to service before

Former Alaska Governor and Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin caused quite the stir in 2009 when, in challenging the drafting of the Affordable Care Act, she stated that the bill would create a “death panel” of bureaucrats who would decide whether Americans—such as her elderly parents or children with certain disabilities were “worthy of medical care”. But critics like Palin had already viewed Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) and its cost-effectiveness analysis to determine whether new treatments and drugs should be available to those covered by under the NHS.The Daily Telegraph took note and the Sunday Times wrote that Sarah Palin’s use

Many reporters reflexively support unions, and prefer not to acknowledge scandals related to them, especially at the local and state level. Nevertheless, troubling news accounts have emerged: - A New York City sewer engineer is paid $775,000 ($173,000 regular annual rate plus back payments from settlement of a labor dispute).292 ?? – A Chicago union leader takes a leave of absence in 1989 from the city’s sanitation department, where he earned $40,000, to work for a union. He is then allowed to “retire” from the city at age 56 with $108,000 pension. (The rules say that the individual should waive a union

The new face of food stamps:
working-age Americans
Associated Press, by Staff    Original Article

In a first, working-age people now make up the majority in U.S. households that rely on food stamps -- a switch from a few years ago, when children and the elderly were the main recipients. Some of the change is due to demographics, such as the trend toward having fewer children. But a slow economic recovery with high unemployment, stagnant wages and an increasing gulf between low-wage and high-skill jobs also plays a big role. It suggests that government spending on the $80 billion-a-year food stamp program -- twice what it cost five years ago -- may not subside significantly

Newark — One week before police say he took part in a deadly carjacking at the Short Hills mall, Hanif Thompson was spotted breaking into property in Newark, getting into an Audi and trying to drive away, Essex County prosecutors say. Newark police caught Thompson near the Weequahic Avenue property on Dec. 7 and charged him with burglary and resisting arrest, prosecutors say. He remained locked up at the Essex County Jail through Dec. 11 when, prosecutors say, the ex-con was released after a Newark Municipal Court judge reduced his bail from $50,000 to $20,000 with the option of paying $2,000

The lawyer spoke during the opening of a civil trial in the case, pressed by the family of Concetta "Connie" Russo-Carriero of White Plains, who was stabbed by Phillip Grant on June 29, 2005, at the parking garage. One week ago today, we covered in detail serious allegations from the Democratic Mayor of Hoboken, New Jersey against Chris Christie´s administration. Dawn Zimmer claimed that two high-ranking Christie officials -- including the Lieutenant Governor -- told her that aid for her city´s recovery from the storm was contingent on her approval of a building development deal favored by the governor. I discussed several curious elements of this accusation at the time, noting the Mayor´s unqualified praise of Christie several months after this alleged shakedown attempt took place, and citing a local reporter to whom Zimmer had floated a different

Sen. Paul´s wife, Kelley, made similar remarks in a Vogue profile last year, and her husband agreed with her Sunday in an interview on NBC´s "Meet the Press." Rand Paul said the scandal is about more than just infidelity and lying to the American people, but also as "predatory behavior" from the former president. I first wrote about the slow but steady progress of Iran toward becoming a nuclear power in December 2007, and then followed up in 2010. The theme of both columns was the incredible naivete of the United States in accepting the reassuring words coming from Tehran about the Islamic republic’s nuclear intentions. In 2007, I disdainfully concluded, “if global geopolitics were a television sitcom, then the government of the United States would be Boss Hogg, and

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said on Sunday that Republicans should oppose raising the debt limit without including a measure to reduce the nation’s debt, setting up a likely fight with Democrats when Congress tackles the issue next month. “I think for the president to ask for a clean debt ceiling when we have a debt the size of our economy is irresponsible. So we ought to discuss adding something to his request to raise the debt ceiling that does something about the debt or produces at least something positive for our country,” he said on "Fox News Sunday."

The American system of government has as it´s chief executive, a president who is carefully checked by a watchful Congress and a consientious judiciary. Except, when it isn´t. Case in point: Our president plans to rule us - not govern us - by using the vast powers of his office and absolute control of the federal bureaucracy to ram his vision of hope and change down our throats. Done without the approval of Congress and with little challenge from the judiciary. Can he get away with it? Watch him: The new plan "is to bring all of the government alive in a way we

The U.S. Postal Service will increase the cost of a stamp on Monday to 49 cents from the current 46 cents. The spike is a 6.5 percent jump, contrary to the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act, which states that stamp prices cannot increase faster than the rate of inflation, The Wall Street Journal reported. Mounting financial losses forced the USPS to ask regulators to authorize an increase greater than the rate of inflation, which the agency was granted. But regulators refused to make it permanent, a move that upset Postal Service officials, according to the paper.

President Ronald Reagan once said, “Within the covers of the Bible are the answers for all the problems men face.” Well, if Reagan was right, Chattanooga, Tennessee, will be solving their problems a little better than all the other cities across the nation. After interviewing more than 46,000 adults nationwide over a seven-year period, the American Bible Society, in conjunction with Barna, ranks Chattanooga as the number one most Bible-minded city in the United States. Providence, Rhode Island, and New Bedford, Massachusetts, share the dubious distinction of being the least most-Bible minded cities in America.

Most people believe in some kind of God. Less believe in the existence of personified evil, or the Devil. And yet the question of this essay, whether Barack has satanic characteristics, does not really depend upon whether Satan exists. Because whether as a literal figure, or simply as a literary device, there are certain devilish qualities which are hideous and highly destructive when any personality bears them. And Barack seems to carry virtually all of these traits. According to the Bible, some of Satan’s qualities are therefore listed here: Many characteristics and names of Satan can be discovered in the Bible. He

Amazon Prime is like crack, people warn me in hushed, cautionary tones. Once you try it, you’re hooked. I personally have not signed up for Amazon’s premiere, super-duper, fancy-dancy, wave-o’-the-future membership program, even though I’m a frequent customer. But I’m fascinated by the transformation people talk about once they do. “Oh, you’ll see,” they tell me, “you’ll see.” On its face, Prime offers two simple things: Free two-day shipping on most purchases, and access to streaming movies and TV shows. All for $80 a year. Whether or not people need two-day shipping, a few things seem to happen once they
