Obama Income Inequality
Plans: Been There, Tried That

In his State of the Union speech on Tuesday, President Obama is expected to make income inequality the centerpiece of his address. Political analysts say it´s a way for him to connect with a public still anxious about the tepid economic recovery — now in its fifth year — and upset with Obama over the disastrous rollout of ObamaCare. They also see it as a way to rally his liberal base in advance of the 2014 midterm elections. But what Obama is unlikely to say in his lengthy address is that income inequality — as measured by the Census Bureau´s Gini index

Argentina is considering the purchase from Israel of 18 multipurpose combat aircraft Kfir Block 60 after negotiations with Spain for 16 Mirage F1 fighter bombers fell through, according to a report from Buenos Aires daily Clarin. Apparently Israel´s offer has been on the Defense minister Agustin Rossi´s desk since some time but only resurfaced sometime back in September following on the frustrated deal with Spain. Clarin also mentions that news of the negotiations between the Argentine ministry of defense and Israel´s Aero-spatial Industry, IAI, which manufactures the Kfir Block 60, caused ´concern´ in the British government since it is

Hong Kong Erik Prince —ex-Navy SEAL, ex-CIA spy, ex-CEO of private-security firm Blackwater —calls himself an "accidental tourist" whose modest business boomed after 9/11, expanded into Iraq and Afghanistan, and then was "blowtorched by politics." To critics and conspiracy theorists, he is a mercenary war-profiteer. To admirers, he´s a patriot who has repeatedly answered America´s call with bravery and creativity. Now, sitting in a boardroom above Hong Kong´s Victoria Harbour, he explains his newest title, acquired this month: chairman of Frontier Services Group, an Africa-focused security and logistics company with intimate ties to China´s largest state-owned conglomerate, Citic Group. Politics: The Obama administration has turned the executive branch loose on its enemies — part of a disturbing and unprecedented trend toward delegitimizing political differences and marginalizing conservatives. Behind the special status of his presidency, President Obama has used the machinery of government to harass and intimidate political opponents — to an extent greater even than former Presidents Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton, both threatened with impeachment. Consider these recent events, courtesy of the Ace of Spades blog: • Attorney General Eric Holder´s Southern District of New York office has indicted conservative author, activist and filmmaker Dinesh D´Souza — producer of the critical

The Obama administration’s testy relationship with the press is nothing new for Washington, but it’s now extended to Colorado and has touched off a firestorm after Interior Department officials booted local reporters from a public meeting earlier this week. Journalists with Colorado´s Craig Daily Press and at least two other media outlets were barred from a Tuesday question-and-answer session with Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, despite the fact that members of the public were allowed to attend. “What happened would be in complete alignment with the administration’s policies. We were promised the most transparent administration ever and instead we’ve gotten the opposite,” said

Discotheques have long operated inside Venezuelan penitentiaries, the head of the country´s prison service said Thursday in response to a public uproar over the death of a young man after partying at a disco behind bars. ”The scandal (regarding) if ´there are discotheques in the prisons.´ The discos in the prisons have always existed, at least since the revolution (1999, when leftist Hugo Chavez became president). Regrettably, it´s a perversion,“ Iris Varela told reporters from a prison in the eastern state of Anzoategui. ”What the management of the revolutionary government has done is do away with those discotheques, close them,“

Phoenix — Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says several inmates who defaced the American flag will be given only bread and water. Arpaio says 38 inmates are accused of desecrating a flag and will be put on the special diet as punishment. A U.S. flag is emblazoned in every jail cell in all six Maricopa County jails, Arpaio said. According to Arpaio, inmates have torn flags, written or stepped on them. Some have also thrown flags in the toilet or trash. The sheriff says they are destroying government property.

New York — After years of delays due to funding disputes, engineering challenges and a nearly disastrous flood, a museum dedicated to victims of the 9/11 terror attacks will open to the public in mid-May in a giant cavern beneath the World Trade Center site — with a world-class admissions price of $24. National 9/11 Memorial and Museum President Joe Daniels said Friday that tickets would go on sale for the museum in March for the spring opening. That $24 price is in line with other major tourist attractions in New York City. It costs $18 to take a

Democratic campaign operatives have been getting worried that the White House wasn’t doing enough to help them in the midterms, and that President Barack Obama didn’t care enough to change that. Friday, Obama provided the answer: David Simas, a longtime aide who returned to the White House after running polling and focus groups for the re-election campaign, was named director of a new Office of Political Strategy and Outreach. (Snip) Repeatedly, in public and private, Obama has been calling the November elections a top priority. He knows what’s at stake: Democrats losing the Senate would mean a daily barrage

Supreme Court blocks

The Supreme Court on Friday shielded the Little Sisters of the Poor and other nonprofit religious groups from complying, for now, with the Obama administration’s rule that they provide free contraceptives in the health insurance they offer employees. The justices issued a one-paragraph order that keeps in place a temporary injunction that was handed down by Justice Sonia Sotomayor on Dec. 31. The Little Sisters of the Poor and other Catholic charities objected to the so-called “contraceptive mandate” -- a provision of the Affordable Care Act -- on religious grounds. Their lawyers said they feared “draconian fines” if they failed to comply

The group considers itself conservative with a libertarian emphasis. They call themselves the Liberty Caucus and believe that in order for the GOP to win more elections in the future, the party must begin embracing their libertarian-minded philosophy because voters are beginning to demand it, particularly in the wake of government data collection revelations that some believe infringe on privacy

Obamacare is like an onion: The more layers you peel back, the worse it smells. The latest revelation about this horrible law is the presence of a “risk corridor,” a euphemism for an insurance industry bailout that will occur sometime in the next year. The law depends upon the voluntary participation of insurers. Private citizens are compelled to purchase insurance, but insurers are free to walk away from Obamacare. To prevent that from happening, congressional Democrats put in place guarantees to cover insurance industry losses for the first few years of the program.

Bill de Blasio, New York´s new left-wing mayor, this week experienced a demonstration of the hazards of divisive politicking. On Tuesday the city was blanketed with a foot of global warming. A major snowstorm is always a political event, as the effectiveness of the Sanitation Department´s response provides a test of municipal government that affects almost all city residents. The New York Post reported Tuesday evening: "It really is a tale of two cities--this time with the tony Upper East Side getting the shaft!" IBM managers are working on their lists and checking them twice, but this is not about Santa Claus. It’s about downsizing. People with access to inside-IBM information have told the Poughkeepsie Journal that managers have to identify candidates by Friday for a future “resource action” to eliminate jobs. Managers in the U.S. Systems and Technology Group were told they needed to do some planning in case a resource action is approved. Employees are not being told at this point. That development is consistent with Tuesday’s revelations by IBM Chief Financial Officer Martin Schroeter that the first quarter would bring the

Some religious affiliated non-profits will remain temporarily exempt from requirements in the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, to cover birth control and other reproductive health coverage they oppose for religious reasons. That is the result of a Supreme Court decision on Friday that extended an injunction for a Catholic charity run by nuns, the Little Sisters of the Poor. The exemption stands while the case is being considered by the lower courts. It is a clear victory for the religious group and its insurer.

Clinton, who left her post at the State Department last year, has not confirmed that she will be revving up her second presidential campaign, though that hasn’t stopped supporters from raising funds and preparing for the campaign. Election Day is almost nine months off. But right now Republicans seem almost certain to hold the House of Representatives and are likely to take the Senate. Which raises the inevitable question: How might the GOP seize defeat from the jaws of victory? Two occasions stand out, two obvious obstacles ahead that could lead to disastrous Republican stumbles, two pitfalls on the path to a happy GOP Election Day. Republicans are pretty good at falling into such pits. One is the increase in the debt limit, which Congress will have to deal with in the next month or two. The other

Patrick Festa says that after President Barack Obama left his Scranton, Pennsylvania, home following a November 2011 visit, things got “a little creepy.” Friends and neighbors flocked to the house to pose for pictures in the dining room chair where Obama sat for lunch before giving a speech urging a payroll tax-cut extension. Festa and his wife, Donna, kept the president’s used teacup and napkin in the same spot for “too long.” Today, the thrill of that presidential visit has faded amid the financial strains that Festa, 51, a third-grade teacher, says have intensified over the last two years.
