House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) says he has “no problem” with the Tea Party and that he agrees with them "90 percent of the time.” Boehner appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night and told the host, “I don’t have any problem with the Tea Party. Those people have brought great energy to the political process, most of them have never been involved before.” “When you agree with someone 90 percent of the time they’re not your enemy, “ Boehner continued. Earlier in the interview Boehner described himself as “right of center” in characterizing his relationship with

The Republican National Committee raised $80.6 million in 2013, over $7 million of that in December alone, according to the committee’s treasurer, Tony Parker. Parker also announced at the RNC’s annual winter meeting on Friday that the committee has more than $9.2 million cash on hand, over $4 million more than it had in the bank at the close of 2012. The committee remains debt-free. Throughout most of last year, the RNC outraised its Democratic counterpart, but from September through November the Democratic National Committee picked up its pace and outraised the RNC. The former chief of staff to Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn) arrested on child pornography charges last month has been found dead, according to two sources familiar with the matter. Jesse Ryan Loskarn, 35, died in an apparent suicide in his parents´ house in Sykesville, Md., the sources said. Loskarn had been released into his parents’ custody in mid-December after being charged with possession and distribution of child pornography. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service arrested Loskarn last month. It said it had evidence that Loskarn had ordered child pornography through the mail and distributed videos on the Internet. There is plenty of sleazy stuff that isn’t illegal. Many pundits start hyperventilating when a politician comes under investigation. But as an old Justice Department reporter, I know that prosecutors can face a steep hurdle when it comes to getting a conviction. Doing favors for donors, carrying water for lobbyists, strong-arming other politicians — such behavior often falls into a murky zone of unethical behavior that falls short of illegality. There’s a difference between a court of law and the court of public opinion. And two recent probes underscore the point. The U.S. attorney in New Jersey is investigating Chris Christie’s bridge

Former Virginia Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell and his wife Maureen pleaded not guilty Friday to federal corruption charges for allegedly accepting gifts, vacations and loans. The McDonnells were indicted Tuesday on a 14-count indictment that included charges of conspiracy, wire fraud and providing false statements in connection with the McDonnells´ relationship to Jonnie R. Williams, Sr., chief executive of nutritional supplements maker Star Scientific Inc. Their jury trial has been set for July 28. Earlier in the day, both were released on their own recognizance as they await trial. A federal magistrate judge ordered them not to leave the country. The

At the 1992 Democratic National Convention, the pro-life Democratic governor of Pennsylvania, Robert Casey, was barred from speaking. The message was if you are pro-life, you have no place in the Democratic party. The new attitude of the Democratic party, at least as represented by New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo, is if you are pro-life, you have no place in a blue state. During a January 17 interview with Susan Arbetter of WCNY’s “The Capitol Pressroom,” Cuomo, angry at Republican opposition to his agenda, offered his critique of the GOP. “Who are they?” Cuomo demanded to know. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is a politically entrenched synod of special interests. These fat cats do not represent the best interests of American entrepreneurs, American workers, American parents and students, or Americans of any race, class or age who believe in low taxes and limited government. The chamber´s business is the big business of the Beltway, not the business of mainstream America. If you are a business owner who believes your country should strictly and consistently enforce its borders and deport illegal immigrants who violate the terms of their visas, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce doesn´t represent you. Evidence continues to mount that President Obama´s legacy when he leaves office in 2017 will be best captured by the phrase “Great Divider.” For his fifth year in the Oval Office, Obama´s “partisan gap” - the difference in the two major parties´ approval rating of a president - is 71 points, as measured by Gallup. That nearly ties Obama with President George W. Bush´s 72-point gap in his fifth year in office. But Obama’s overall tenure tells the rest of the polarization story: “Obama´s first, second, third, and fourth years in office were the most polarized for any president´s first,

U.S. treasury and law enforcement agencies will soon issue regulations opening banking services to state-sanctioned marijuana businesses even though cannabis remains classified an illegal narcotic under federal law, Attorney General Eric Holder said on Thursday. Holder said the new rules would address problems faced by newly licensed recreational pot retailers in Colorado, and medical marijuana dispensaries in other states, in operating on a cash-only basis, without access to banking services or credit. Proprietors of state-licensed marijuana distributors in Colorado and elsewhere have complained of having to purchase inventory, pay employees and conduct sales entirely in cash, requiring elaborate and expensive security measures

Stop me if you’ve heard this before. A conservative group applies for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status with the IRS in full compliance of the law, but gets jerked around for a couple of years in a process that should just take a few months. The IRS tax-exempt unit then starts demanding private information that isn’t germane to the application, but which worries members about just why the IRS would want this kind of information about opponents to the current administration. According to the Obama administration, this is old news from 2010-12, and the targeting of political opponents by the IRS stopped

The Republican governor has routinely touted immigration as a powerful potential force for growing Detroit’s economy, saying immigrant entrepreneurs start many small businesses and file patents at twice the rate of U.S.-born citizens. “Let’s send a message to the entire world: Detroit, Michigan, is open to the world,” Snyder said at a news conference.
