Rep. Steve Stockman MIA?

Austin, Texas • Have you seen U.S. Rep. Steve Stockman? The suburban Houston Republican and fierce conservative is mounting a long-shot challenge from the right against Senate minority whip John Cornyn but has made virtually no public appearances in Texas as questions mount about his campaign finances. Now, he’s stopped showing up for his day job, too. Stockman has missed 17 straight House votes since Jan. 9— including one on the $1.1 trillion omnibus federal spending package he promised on Twitter to vote against. That’s unusual since, even though Stockman has a reputation as a Capitol Hill renegade, he missed only

Arriangment of D’Souza is expected to occur in federal district court in Manhattan at noon Friday. ... [I]n 2011, a prominent Los Angeles attorney, Pierce O’Donnell, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of making $20,000 in donations to the presidential campaign of former Sen. Barack Obama doesn’t just have a pen and a telephone, he’s got a hammer and sickle too. The battle lines of the promised Marxist Revolution are being perfected as we go about our daily lives, and Obama’s hammer and sickle will drop on the Western world now that it’s 2014. Obama’s ‘Fundamental Transformation of America’ is only Stage 1 of a breathtaking world takeover plan. Obama and the fomenting-for-revolution Marxists won’t wait until 2016 to deliver their ‘New Socialist USA’. This is just for openers: Emboldened by Barack Obama’s twice-repeated reminder “I have a pen and a telephone” to bypass Congress whenever he

Obama angers U.S. friends, but his bid

Barack Obama has achieved acrimony among numerous sectors of Americans now fighting with each other bitterly. His ongoing efforts to screw up relations with America´s closest allies have enjoyed some success. Obama´s undercut the Poles, Czechs, Israelis, angered the Brits, Brazilians, Egyptians and insulted the Germans, Japanese and Indians. And Obama single-handedly made Vladimir Putin look like the Nobel Peace Prize winner over the American´s fictional red line in Syria. But Obama´s bid to ruin the U.S.-Canadian relationship is doomed to failure.

A document coming from the administration has recently come to light that discloses the entire ObamaCare program is in jeopardy of collapse. Of course, the White House did not inform the American people of this prospect but was compelled to post the news on a federal website -- away from the inquiring minds of millions of Americans who may suffer even more from ObamaCare. So much for Barack Obama´s boast that his administration would be the most transparent in history. While the web portal of Healthcare.Gov has received a lot of attention, the true problem lies like an iceberg underneath the

Last night on The Kelly File,, conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer took aim at President Obama’s assertion, printed in the New Yorker, that the conservative media was to blame for turning him into a “caricature” and hindering his agenda. “It’s rather unseemly if you are the commander-in-chief, the leader of the free world and the most powerful man on earth who could reduce pieces of the planet to a cinder on his command, to get so whiny,” Krauthammer complained to Megyn Kelly. And besides, he pointed out, Obama already has tons of media allies in print, television, and Hollywood. “It’s what Lenin would

Speaker of the House John Boehner appeared on The Tonight Show Thursday night and chatted with Jay Leno about Washington politics, working with President Obama, and having to lead a huge group of ideologically diverse Republicans. After some bantering and Boehner sharing his life story, Leno asked about all the recent GOP infighting and the tea party’s role in Congress. Boehner said “it’s all a fight over tactics” and thinks the tea party has brought “great energy to the political process.” What he objected to in his now-infamous rant in which he lashed out at outside conservative groups, he explained,

Dinesh D´Souza, a best selling author and creator of the documentary "2016: Obama´s America" has been indicted for election fraud and causing false statement to be made to the FBI. The indictment alleges that D´Souza reimbursed some people for giving campaign contributions to a Senate candidate from New York. The amount that was allegedly donated was $20,000. Reuters: Federal law in 2012 limited primary and general election campaign contributions to $2,500 each, for a total of $5,000, from any individual to any one candidate. Merle Haggard knows all about hard living, uncertain love and workers ground down by depressing jobs. As one of country music´s greatest living singer-songwriters, Mr. Haggard in the 1960s was an architect of the Bakersfield sound—an earthy, California-born style that was more firmly rooted in country´s traditions than the polished productions recorded in Nashville at the time.Mr. Haggard—who will perform Sunday at the Grammy Awards—grew up in Bakersfield but soon ran afoul of the law in the 1950s, landing in prison after trying to rob a roadhouse. No doubt Mayor de Blasio was relieved to beat it out of town Thursday and leave behind inconvenient questions about the botch of this week’s snowstorm. Plainly he is more comfortable on a stage in Washington, where he declared to his fellow mayors that it’s their job “to address the root causes of inequality.” Now, this week’s snowstorm was not on the scale of the one that so damaged Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s reputation in 2010, much less the one that forever tarnished John Lindsay many decades earlier. But it carries a warning especially apt for a man who views himself as

That being said, here is another little gem that was buried in ObamaCare. When my most recent bill (premium due) arrived from BCBSIL, there was an asterisk and an "explanation":

Reloading the firing squad

Has the left’s attempt to use the lethal-injection process to ban the death penalty backfired? Consideration of firing squads for implementing the death penalty is not a fringe issue and would bring back the humaneness the left claims it wants in the process. As often as I can, I laud the importance, value and decency of the death penalty. As a feminist, I’ve spent a great deal of my adult life as an advocate for women, educating on violence against women and agitating for justice for women in a system that far too often forgets the victims on the receiving end

A massive pile up during a whiteout storm in Indiana on Thursday afternoon killed three people and injured more than 20 others. Chaotic scenes of jackknifed trailers and the mangled wreckage of cars packed across three lanes of the highway could be seen after visibility dropped to nearly zero at about 3.30pm. More than 40 vehicles, including semitrailers and cars, were involved in the deadly crash near Michigan City, but wintry conditions and the scale of the crash site slowed rescue efforts. One driver was still trapped in their car at 6.30pm, three hours after the crash happened, as rescue crews worked

Potential jurors screened for the scheduled Jan. 27 corruption trial of former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin will be asked about their understanding of the indictment, and their ability to presume Nagin innocent until proven guilty. They will not, however, be asked a series of questions proposed by Nagin´s defense attorney, Robert Jenkins, that inspired opposition among prosecutors, a federal judge has ruled. Nagin is accused of accepting bribes and kickbacks during his tenure as mayor. Jenkins made his case last week for keeping a handful of questions about potential jurors´ understanding of the difference between a charge and a conviction. One

The Constitution is powerless against Satan. Earlier this month, the state of Oklahoma received a proposal from New York–based Satanists to build near the state capitol a seven-foot-high statue of Baphomet, a goat-headed pagan idol. The Satanists’ letter boasted that “the statue will also have a functional purpose as a chair where people of all ages may sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation.” Now, while the Satanists are real, there’s a lot of fakery involved. It’s a stunt — a clever one — exploiting the constitutional injunction against governmental favoritism towards religion. The Oklahoma capitol has a statue

The Democrats´ new much-vaunted master plan for annihilating the Tea Party movement calls for aggressive class warfare, demagoguery, and lying about the beliefs, motives, and goals of Tea Party supporters, Sen. Chuck Schumer revealed yesterday. Echoing President Obama´s infamous "bitter clingers" remarks, the New York Democrat argued that Tea Party supporters are cartoonish figures who are easily ridiculed. Invoking all the usual liberal cliches about conservatives, Schumer said the Tea Party is successor to "the Know-Nothings, Prohibitionists, Father Coughlin, and Huey Long." In other words, he believes the movement is a collection of hicks, yahoos, neo-Luddites, fascists, male chauvinists, and racists fearful

One of the things that attracted me to the political left, as a young man, was a belief that leftists were for "the people." Fortunately, I was also very interested in the history of ideas -- and years of research in that field repeatedly brought out the inescapable fact that many leading thinkers on the left had only contempt for "the people." That has been true from the 18th century to the present moment. Even more surprising, I discovered over the years that leading thinkers on the opposite side of the ideological spectrum had more respect for ordinary people than

Pensioners with cancer are being written off as too old to treat, campaigners said yesterday. They cited figures showing survival rates for British patients aged 75 and over are among the worst in Europe. Young lung cancer sufferers are only 10 percent more likely to die within five years than their continental counterparts. But pensioners with the disease have 44 percent less chance of survival. The figure for stomach cancer--at 45 percent--is even worse. And Britons with prostate cancer are a fifth less likely to survive than Europeans if they are 85 and over. Just 43 percent live for five

In a relatively brief order, Judge Weisberg denied the defendants’ motions to dismiss and lifted the stay on discovery in the suit. He explained: Opinions and rhetorical hyperbole are protected speech under the First Amendment. Arguably, several of defendants’ statements fall into these protected categories. Some of defendants’ statements, however, contain what could reasonably be understood as assertions of fact. Accusing a scientist of conducting his research fraudulently, manipulating his data

To call Twitter a wild west is an understatement – it’s regressed far beyond that. We’re back to tribes and mob rule – with added speed and bloodlust. The inhabitants are confused and angry and move in swarms. You never know when they’ll suddenly swerve in unison and come at you. But how to deal with this random, terrifying phenomenon? Some hope we can get rid of it by civilising Twitter: introduce a basic justice system, swap the tribes for a sort of centralised government, perhaps move everyone on from hunter-gathering to nomadic farming. This might take a while.

Top Republicans are saying they can no longer just be the party of "No" on Obamacare: They need to come up with an alternative healthcare policy. While many Americans are skeptical of President Barack Obama´s healthcare overhaul, they also tell lawmakers they worry about keeping their costs from getting out of control. For those voters, a party that offers a platform to repeal the 2010 law without anything to replace it may not be very attractive. As a result, lawmakers from both the establishment wing of the Republican Party and the more fiscally conservative small-government proponents in the Tea Party movement are

The national debate over marijuana legalization has caught many liberals in a confounding paradox. These liberals, who have fought vociferously for bans on cigarettes, super-sized sodas, trans fats and other unhealthy substances, now either advocate for the legalization of marijuana or stand unopposed to it. This is notable because, whatever else it is, marijuana is not healthy. In his recent New Yorker interview, President Obama remarked, “I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big

Corruption in the governor’s mansions just ain’t what it used to be. A crooked governor of the old school, even an honors graduate in the not-so-long ago, would never have settled for a pair of FootJoy golf shoes, a Rolex, an Oscar de la Renta dress for the missus or airline tickets to a bachelorette party in Savannah and midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. With or without a Louis Vuitton suitcase. Grifters today think small, and some of the greediest crooks among us have neither vision nor imagination.
