Former Energy Secretary Steven Chu will join the board of a company that got millions of dollars from the Department of Energy during Chu’s tenure and is backed by some of the nation’s most politically connected investors. Lithium ion battery manufacturer Amprius announced Chu’s move on Monday. His “ideas and experience will help Amprius accelerate the development of even higher-energy batteries,” the company said in a statement. Chu has already helped the company accelerate that development through more than $4 million in DOE grant money paid to the company since 2011. The company was awarded a $4,998,336 grant that year

Former Virginia Gov. Robert F. McDonnell and his wife Maureen were charged in federal court Tuesday with illegally accepting gifts, luxury vacations and large loans from a wealthy Richmond-area businessman who sought special treatment from state government. The two were charged in connection with their relationship with dietary supplement executive Jonnie R. Williams Sr. Authorities alleged McDonnell and his wife received gifts from Williams again and again, lodging near constant requests for money, clothes, trips, golf accessories and private plane rides. In exchange, they alleged the McDonnells worked in concert to lend the prestige of the governorship to Williams’s struggling company, a

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. -- A Republican candidate for a Florida House seat claimed on Twitter that President Barack Obama should be hanged for war crimes. His comments came on the day when the nation was celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. "I´m past impeachment," tweeted Black, who is a candidate for the Florida House in District 68 in the St. Peterburg/Clearwater area. "It´s time to arrest and hang him high." The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Black defended his original tweet, which reportedly has remained on his account. He claims Obama ´should be held responsible for ordering a drone strike that killed a

Tuesday, South Carolina Republican Sen. Tim Scott slammed the NAACP chapter president who called him a ventriloquist’s dummy for the tea party. According to Scott, North Carolina NAACP President Rev. William Barber II is an example of how not to behave. “To reflect seriously on the comments a person, a pastor, that is filled with baseless and meaningless rhetoric would be to do a disservice to the very people who have sacrificed so much and paved a way,” Scott told The Daily Caller in an emailed statement. “Instead, I will honor the memory of Dr. King by being proactive in

A prominent NAACP official recognized Martin Luther King Day by labeling black senator Tim Scott a puppet for the Republican party. “A ventriloquist can always find a good dummy,” said Reverend William Barber II, the president of North Carolina’s NAACP chapter. The State reports that Barber’s remarks came in a speech in Scott’s home state of South Carolina. “The extreme right wing down here,” he said, “finds a black guy to be senator and claims he’s the first black senator since Reconstruction and then he goes to Washington, D.C., and articulates the agenda of the Tea Party.” Last year, Barber

Rep. Whether it’s an economic panic, Great Depression, slavery, Jim Crow, Civil War, World War, Cold War. There are times when our country is confronted with a crisis that poses an existential threat to our nation and our way of life

SANTA FE — The amount of money from political action committees going to New Mexico campaigns more than doubled following the U.S. Supreme Court´s decision in the 2010 case Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. The head of a statewide government watchdog group says that makes it more difficult for citizens to find out who really is paying for political campaigns. The Citizens United case resulted in a controversial ruling that established that corporations and unions have the same political speech rights as individuals under the First Amendment and can spend as much as they like to elect or defeat

The Roanoke College poll of Virginia residents (not voters) unsurprisingly finds Sen. Mark Warner (R-Va.) ahead by almost 30 points over just-announced Republican challenger Ed Gillespie. The good news for Gillespie, however, is below the top-line numbers. For one thing Warner’s identification with President Obama is problematic. (“Obama’s job approval rating has declined 5 points since October 30, 2013 Roanoke College Poll and now is at 38 percent (47% disapprove).”) If Gillespie can paint Warner as a rubber stamp for Obama’s key initiatives, he made be able to chip away at Warner’s claim to independence and moderation. Texas Rep. Steve Stockman, who is challenging Sen. John Cornyn in this year´s Republican primary, couldn´t find a picture of Cornyn smiling at President Obama. So someone on his team made one, repurposing an old photo of Florida´s Charlie Crist. The odd image was spotted by Politico´s Burgess Everett on Stockman´s breathless Cornyn Loves Obamacare website. Of the image, which is below, Burgess pointed out that it looked "like Cornyn´s face was photoshopped onto Biden´s head." Right idea; wrong guy. It´s actually a 2009 photo of Obama with Crist, who was governor of Florida at the time. Here´s the original image,

This should have been big news. However, the claim was ignored or dismissed by most of the major media. A major exception was NBC News, which posted a clip from the press conference and an item noting

President Obama’s latest claims about marijuana are contradicted by research and official positions of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, which is part of the White House. And Mr. Obama’s words have anti-drug leaders worried about negative repercussions among youth. Mr. Obama claimed to The New Yorker magazine that marijuana is no worse than cigarettes or alcohol and he promoted state efforts by Colorado and Washington to legalize marijuana, which remains illegal under federal law. The National Drug Control Policy’s official stance, posted on the whitehouse.gov website, says the opposite of Mr. Obama on all counts. For example, as documented in agency

Throughout the 1980s the US government was increasingly worried about a new, ungovernable public space. Although still tiny, this “cyberspace” was becoming a nuisance to the law: untraceable paedophile networks were sharing images, anonymous hackers were stealing intellectual property. In 1990 the FBI launched Operation Sun Devil, a nationwide, over-the-top crackdown on hackers and upped their monitoring of the online world. [Snip] But here’s Act Two of the drama. Philip Zimmerman was so incensed by the government trying to stop people from using cryptography that he decided to develop powerful cryptographic software and make freely available to everyone. Readers of Reason who happened to see a review of my book Freedom Feminism by Sharon Presley might conclude that I am a hidebound reactionary—someone with views antithetical to liberty. As Presley tells it, I believe most women are homebodies who would be far happier staying out of the workplace altogether. She confidently concludes that my views have “nothing to offer feminism, let alone libertarian feminism.” I wish Presley had engaged with my arguments instead of caricaturing them. Freedom feminism is libertarian feminism.

MSNBC´s Chuck Todd declared Christie´s presidential hopes "done" if donors believe he will be the person he has been this week. Todd, who was on Morning Joe to describe the way Christie sources told him the Governor appeared on his Florida fundraiser tour this weekend, had a dire report on Christie. We conservatives, crouching in the trenches of the political wars, experience liberals as haters and culture warriors. When we think of liberals we think of the Kos Kidz over at DailyKos and the execrable hosts on MSNBC. We think of the liberal journalists that sneer "who me?" to the charge of journalistic bias. But I was reminded this last week that many liberals are naifs and innocents. They don´t see feminists as the professional class making a virtue out of poor women raising their children; they think of career women and two-income families as a simple natural progress from darkness to

The 2010 midterm elections could not have gone much worse for Democrats. Not only did the party lose control of the House of Representatives and six seats in the Senate, the GOP picked up just shy of 700 state legislative seats, controlling 56 of the 99 chambers throughout the country. Adding to their gains in the states, Republicans also picked up six governorships in 2010, cementing their advantage. But it wasn´t just the breadth of Democratic losses that made them so damaging for the party; it was the timing. Following the 2010 census, the nation´s congressional districts were reapportioned, and so

BANGOR TOWNSHIP, MI — A Bangor Township family of four, all of whom have disabilities, say they fall within a niche that makes the Affordable Care Act more of a burden than a blessing. Now, they say, they´ll be paying nearly $8,000 more per year for medical care after being denied coverage through Obamacare. The family in question is the Daverts — husband and wife Ken and Melissa and their 15-year-old twins Austin and Michaela. The twins and their mother are afflicted with osteogensis imperfecta, a disease that makes their bones extremely fragile. They are also highly susceptible to lung infections.

WASHINGTON -- Fed up with the Democrats and Republicans who run Washington, growing numbers of people are calling themselves independents. The Republican Party stands to suffer the most from the movement away from staunch party loyalty, but Democrats also are affected. “This says both parties are dealing with wounded brands,” said Lee Miringoff, the director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion. As a result, he said, “there are more voters up for grabs.” Voters are increasingly wary of anyone with ties to the political establishment. A McClatchy-Marist poll last month found 41 percent of registered voters called themselves independent, a much higher

In the Spring of 2011, National Security Council staffer Samantha Power sent emails to top Pentagon officials. Her emails contained GPS coordinates in Libya. She demanded that the Pentagon launch immediate air strikes on top of these coordinates, no questions asked. Power, you see, had friends in NGOs on the ground in Libya looking to borrow American might for a moment or two. Her emails were ignored at the Pentagon. But her cavalier and hasty email demand that American airmen be launched on a dangerous mission to benefit her friends might seem incompetent and reckless.
