Mexico warns US not to execute

Mexico has strongly objected to the scheduled execution in Texas of a Mexican convicted of killing a U.S. police officer, arguing that by executing him, the United States would be in "clear violation" of international treaties. Edgar Tamayo, who is scheduled to be executed on Wednesday, was convicted of shooting dead a Houston police officer in 1994 when he was in the United States illegally. But Tamayo was not informed of his right, enshrined in an international treaty known as the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, to diplomatic assistance. Tamayo´s lawyers say assistance from the Mexican consulate could have helped him obtain

In an unusual move, U.S. ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy has expressed deep concern over the traditional dolphin hunt in western Japan, where local fisherman corral dolphins in a secluded bay before killing many for meat. The annual dolphin hunt currently under way in Taiji in western Japan has long been a source of controversy and was the topic of "The Cove," an Oscar-winning documentary. "(I am) deeply concerned by inhumanness of drive hunt dolphin killing," Kennedy tweeted at the weekend, adding that the U.S. government opposes drive hunt fishing. Every year the fishermen of Taiji – a small fishing

Imagine a world without the New York Times, Fox News, CNN, the Wall Street Journal, and countless other tools used by the 1 percent to rule and fool. In a socialist society run by and for the working people it represents, the mega-monopolies like Walmart, Halliburton, Exxon-Mobil, and the corporations that run the tightly controlled “mainstream media” will be a thing of the past. It’s not news that the major US media are run by and for big business, or that the major media companies are themselves big businesses. Twenty years ago, thirty corporations controlled 90 percent of US media. Today, it

Wendy Davis, the Texas state senator whose filibuster for abortion rights made her a Democratic superstar and launched her campaign for governor, has admitted to the Dallas Morning News that she lied about key events in her life, including her first divorce. Davis may even have lied under oath, testifying in a federal lawsuit over redistricting that "I got divorced by the time I was 19 years old," when in fact she was divorced at age 21. Other missing details have included: her second husband paid her way through law school and she divorced him the day after the last

Much will be written, and should be, about President Barack Obama´s whining that racism partially explains the year-long plunge in his popularity since his reelection in 2012. What´s also worth noting about the ponderous and painfully long (18 web pages) January 27 writeup in The New Yorker ("Going the Distance; On and off the road with Barack Obama") is David Remnick´s apparent obsessions with rewriting history and recasting reality. But first, here´s the paragraph where Obama, apparently feeling that the "it´s Bush´s fault I inherited all these messes" card may finally have worn itself out, goes for the race card

The militants who gathered on the night of Sept. 11, 2012, to torch and kill inside the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, were a who’s who of the modern al Qaeda movement, newly declassified documents show. Since its attacks on the U.S. in 2001, al Qaeda has worked to establish partners outside its base in Pakistan, especially in North Africa and the new fertile territory of eastern Libya and the port city of Benghazi. All of al Qaeda’s work converged that night in Benghazi, according to a bipartisan report last week by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. Global

BAGHDAD — Iraqi forces faced fierce resistance as they launched an offensive Sunday to vanquish pockets of al-Qaeda-linked militants in the city of Ramadi, underscoring the resilience of insurgents, who have also dug in further east in Fallujah. With the Iraqi armed forces lacking expertise and equipment, the government’s struggle to secure the key cities has stoked concerns that the unrest will spread. In an unnerving sign, Baghdad was put on lockdown Saturday night amid a prison break, car bombings and mortar fire. Security officials said the violence appeared to involve the al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or

Hillary Rodham Clinton is rushing to finish a memoir of her time as secretary of state, something friends see as an urgent mission to frame a key part of her legacy as she readies for a possible presidential campaign. But her Republican critics are racing to define Clinton’s record first — preparing a massive opposition-research effort designed to challenge her recounting of events and undermine the book’s credibility. The war over Clinton’s tenure as the nation’s top diplomat will play out in coming months as a proxy skirmish for a potential 2016 campaign. For Clinton, the political imperative is clear:

Sundays were the hardest day of the week for Peter Tiboris. Weekdays were focused on his business as a wealth management adviser in New York. Saturdays were often spent on the town with a group of close friends or an eligible bachelorette. But on Sundays, the world slowed down, and Mr. Tiboris’s thoughts turned inward. “Sundays are pretty lonely for a single person,” said Mr. Tiboris, 34, who yearned for someone with whom he could effortlessly share life’s quiet moments, someone who could make him smile just by being in the same room.

Tucked away at the end of Gabriel Sherman’s disingenuous Roger Ailes biography, there is a note on sources that should have opened the book. Mr. Sherman has done a lot of interviewing, but there are so many citations of “author interview with a person familiar with the matter” that “The Loudest Voice in the Room” may set a record for blind items and the untrustworthiness they engender. It would have helped to know right from the get-go why Mr. Sherman found this kind of journalism necessary. What he finally provides, by way of explanation, is a Kafkaesque account of how bizarre

Both groups seem somewhat pessimistic about the GOP’s chances in 2016:(Snip) If economic and political conditions in 2016 were the same as they are today, what would happen? So assume that Obama’s approval rating is about 41 percent. Assume that GDP has grown 1.6 percent in the first two quarters of 2016. And, of course, no incumbent will be running. Based on those assumptions, the model predicts that the Republican Party has a 64 percent chance of winning the presidency.

MSNBC, which long ago stopped being a news outlet in the sense of going out to find facts and is largely indistinguishable from Democratic Party talking points, has been going 24/7 since the bridge story broke. No surprise. But then Saturday MSNBC decided to throw even the pretense of journalism overboard. It ran with a claim from Mayor Dawn Zimmer of Hoboken claiming Christie withheld Sandy relief funds to gain approval for a business development. Christie’s
