Battling Cancer, Coburn Cutting
Senate Career Short
National Journal, by Josh Kraushaar and Michael Catalini    Original Article

Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn announced Thursday night that he will be resigning his seat at the end of the year as he battles a recurrence of cancer. (snip) Coburn was first elected to Congress in 1994, as part of a wave of House conservative firebrands swept into office as part of that year´s GOP landslide. Like many of his freshman colleagues, he pledged to only serve three terms. Unlike most of his colleagues, he kept his word. He returned to Washington as a senator in 2004, handily defeating two prominent Republicans for the nomination and a highly-touted Democratic congressman who succeeded

A spate of retirements

Janet Hook and Thomas Crittenden of the Wall Street Journal try to explain the rash of retirements on Capitol Hill. (Snip) The biggest danger facing the Democrats, however, is an unexpected foreign policy crisis which may materialize at any time. A respected British defense advisor publicly called Obama “chronically incapable” of military strategy. Nor is he likely alone in this assessment. Last year the British Parliament voted against David Cameron’s proposal to support Obama’s proposed bombing in Syria, effectively delivering a vote of no-confidence in Obama. The world is expecting trouble. Japan has stepped up its defense spending, as has

The Obama administration’s ballyhooed military “pivot” to Asia is running into some frank talk from the top U.S. commander in the Pacific. Three years after the Pentagon said it was de-emphasizing Europe in favor of the Asia-Pacific region, NavyAdm. Samuel J. Locklear III said this week that U.S. dominance has weakened in the shadow of a more aggressive China. “Our historic dominance that most of us in this room have enjoyed is diminishing, no question,” Adm. Locklear, chief of U.S. Pacific Command, said Wednesday at a naval conference in Virginia. Although Adm. Locklear said it is obvious that Chinese military

Robert Gates’s memoir is not the problem
Washington Post, by Michael Gerson    Original Article

Some autobiographies emerge from careful reflection, others from career calculation. Robert Gates’s “Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War” seems the result of a good, long seethe. This is not to discount Gates’s compelling, sometimes self-critical, recounting of recent history — ample reason to read the book. But consider this judgment: “I saw most of Congress as uncivil, incompetent at fulfilling their basic constitutional responsibilities (such as timely appropriations), micromanagerial, parochial, hypocritical, egotistical, thin-skinned and prone to put self (and re-election) before country.” So much for the legislative branch of the U.S. government. Gates is an exceptionally competent, sober-minded public

By early 2011, writes former defense secretary Robert Gates, he had concluded that President Obama “doesn’t believe in his own [Afghanistan] strategy, and doesn’t consider the war to be his.” Not his? America is at war and he’s America’s commander in chief. For the soldier being shot at in the field, it makes no difference under whose administration the fighting began. In fact, three out of four Americans killed in Afghanistan have died under Barack Obama’s command. That’s ownership enough. Moreover, Gates’s doubts about Obama had begun long before. A year earlier, trying to understand how two senior officials could

A group of the nation’s leading environmental organizations is breaking with the administration over its energy policy, arguing that the White House needs to apply a strict climate test to all of its energy decisions or risk undermining one of the president’s top second-term priorities. The rift — reflected in a letter sent to President Obama by 18 groups, including the Sierra Club, the Environmental Defense Fund and Earthjustice — signals that the administration is under pressure to confront the fossil-fuel industry or risk losing support from a critical part of its political base during an already difficult election year.

Sources close to 55-year-old David Bird´s family told NBC New York that his credit card was used across the border on Wednesday night. They said his family fears that his coverage of OPEC for the Journal may be connected to his disappearance. The Media Research Center reports that a report promoted heavily by NBC News Special Anchor Maria Shriver was funded by a ultra-left political group funded by George Soros. Earlier this week Shriver was all over NBC News and MSNBC to talk about a study titled "The Shriver Report: A Woman´s Nation Pushes Back From the Brink." The promotion of the report also allowed Shriver and NBC News to portray President Obama as "sympathetic to working mothers." This push focusing on women we see throughout the media, not just on NBC, is nothing more than the media prepping the battlefield to

Everyone who works for someone does so knowing that at any time, they might be handed the pink slip. Don´t do your best at the job you have, and it´s sure to come sooner than later. In Washington, things work ... differently. A look at presidential administrations over the last few decades shows that very few high-level officials ever hear the word "fired" -- as a top aide to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie did last week when her role in shutting down busy bridge lanes was exposed. And as the scandals pile up in the Obama Executive Branch, the

Spanish-style arches were all that remained standing in front of piles of broken roof tiles and the smoking rubble of the property. The skeleton of his burned out 1978 Toyota MR2, tire rims melted on the ground, rested in the courtyard nearby as firefighters continued mopping up the area. “I lost everything, how am I going to survive?” he said. IRS Targeting and 2014

President Obama and Democrats have been at great pains to insist they knew nothing about IRS targeting of conservative 501(c)(4) nonprofits before the 2012 election. They´ve been at even greater pains this week to ensure that the same conservative groups are silenced in the 2014 midterms. That´s the big, dirty secret of the omnibus negotiations. As one of the only bills destined to pass this year, the omnibus was—behind the scenes—a flurry of horse trading. One of the biggest fights was over GOP efforts to include language to stop the IRS from instituting a new round of 501(c)(4) targeting. The

Immigration: Major businesses are calling for immigration reform this year, one that would include a massive amnesty for those here illegally. It might be good for their bottom lines, but it´s bad for America´s. The Business Roundtable, a group of 208 major U.S. companies, has come up with its priority list for 2014. Not surprisingly, that list includes immigration reform. Sounds innocent. But to the Roundtable, immigration "reform" includes "a path forward for undocumented workers already living in the United States." In other words, amnesty for those here illegally. We´re glad they think it would be good for them. But for the rest

Listen to the climate change boss at the U.N. Should America´s new growing dependence on natural gas for electricity production be a cause for concern? Despite America´s abundance of natural gas from shale production, some parts of the country have already had warnings that over-dependence on gas for electricity generation exposes consumers to soaring prices for electricity. The problem is the declining use of coal and nuclear power, the two sources of electricity that provide the greatest price stability and serve as a hedge against wide fluctuations in gas prices. For the power industry to become increasingly dependent on a fuel with a history of price volatility could be problematic. Take PJM, the

Because of Iraq, he said, "many around the world are disappointed with our actions, and many in our own country have come to doubt either our wisdom or our capacity to shape events beyond our borders. Congress gave final approval Thursday to a $1.1 trillion spending bill that eases the sharp budget cuts known at the sequester and guarantees that the nation will not endure another government shutdown until at least Oct. 1. After three years of politically bruising and economically damaging battles over the budget, the bipartisan agreement to fund federal agencies through the rest of the fiscal year passed with little fanfare. The Senate voted 72 to 26 to approve the measure Thursday evening, after Republicans persuaded Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) to drop a last-minute push to force another showdown over the Affordable Care

Biden, a car lover who owns a classic Corvette back home in Delaware, appeared to enjoy himself at the show, checking out everything from a 1965 Mustang to a red Corvette Stingray. “I’m like a kid in a candy shop,”

Amy Nicholson, the head film critic over at L.A. Were this a rogue view, it would be well worth ignoring. Unfortunately, it is not, for, among a certain sneering subset, the conceit that the actions and decisions of the American military are informed by racial animus enjoys genuine currency.
