WASHINGTON –The Justice Department is likely to expand the definition of racial profiling to bar federal agents from considering religion, national origin, gender and sexual orientation in their investigations, a person familiar with the issue said Thursday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity about the matter because a Justice Department review of the issue is ongoing. The likely expansion was first reported by The New York Times. Justice Department spokesman Brian Fallon declined to comment. Civil rights groups have long complained that law enforcement agencies have singled out Muslims in counterterrorism investigations and Latinos in immigration investigations. Expanding the

New York City agreed on Wednesday to pay nearly $18 million to settle the civil rights claims of thousands of people arrested during the 2004 Republican National Convention that nominated George W. Bush for a second presidential term. New York police engaged in mass arrests of more than 1,800 protesters, bystanders, legal observers and journalists during the event. Michael Schiller, a documentary maker working for HBO, said he was caught in police netting and arrested while attempting to film protesters from a sidewalk in Lower Manhattan.

"The Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, penned by Thomas Jefferson, declared religious liberty a natural right and any attempt to subvert it ‘a departure from the plan of the Holy Author of our religion, who being Lord both of body and mind, yet chose not to propagate it by coercions on either.’ The statute inspired religious liberty protections in the First Amendment, which has stood for almost two and a quarter centuries.” “Today, America embraces people of all faiths and of no faith. This morning National Journal writer Ron Fournier opened a big can of worms when he asked this question: (Tweet -How does one oppose abortion and support executions? Discuss.) It always surprises me that otherwise intelligent people seem to struggle with the difference between abortion and capital punishment. Fortunately there were a swarm of people willing to take Fournier up on his offer to discuss the difference. Here are a few examples: (Tweets) A couple of folks pointed out that the question is rarely turned around in the other direction:

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew sounded positive notes about the U.S. economy Thursday morning, saying the nation is starting off 2014 "strong" and facing "economic tailwinds, not headwinds," thanks to falling unemployment and what appears to be progress on fiscal affairs in Congress. Lew said at an event hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations that over "the arc of the last half year, the trend of economic statistics — job statistics, confidence — it’s been strong, strong across sectors.” The budget deal reached by congressional negotiators in December "takes away some of the fiscal drag from the economy," Lew said,

In a disgusting display of just how far the liberal media will go to preserve Hillary Clinton´s presidential prospects, Katty Kay has blamed Ambassador Chris Stevens for his own death, while letting Hillary off the hook. On today´s Morning Joe, the BBC´s Kay called the newly-released Senate report on the Benghazi attack "sad" because it showed that Stevens was "fallible." Kay claimed that "he didn´t ask for and even rejected some of the security he might have had." This flies in the face of the report´s findings that "State, then under Hillary Clinton, refused requests to boost security despite warnings

PHOENIX — Border Patrol agents routinely violate the constitutional rights of southern Arizona residents when they stop drivers at interior checkpoints on major highways and state routes near the border, according to an official complaint filed Wednesday. The complaint sent to Homeland Security´s Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties alleges that checkpoint agents conduct searches and detain people without justification and use immigration enforcement as a pretext for "fishing expeditions" for potential criminal activity. The American Civil Liberties Union complaint details alleged violations against 15 U.S. citizens. It is the latest in a series of complaints about the checkpoints,

The government watchdog group that revealed that President Barack Obama failed to attend over half of his daily intelligence briefings (known officially as the Presidential Daily Brief, or PDB) released a devastating Benghazi timeline Wednesday. It reveals Obama’s schedule in the week leading up to the terrorist attacks that claimed the lives of four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens. Release of the Government Accountability Institute (GAI) Benghazi timeline comes as a new Senate report published Wednesday concluded that “the attacks were preventable.” As the GAI timeline reveals, Obama failed to attend his daily intelligence briefing for the five consecutive

In a preemptive move to put state political leaders on notice, gun advocates are planning protests Sunday at all 50 state capitals to warn elected officials that they won´t sit idly by and watch their Second Amendment rights be destroyed. “We´re trying to be very proactive right now,” said Eric Reed, president of Gun Rights Across America, which is organizing the rallies. “I don´t want to see the gun grabbers get a jump on our constitutionally protected rights,” he told Secrets. The top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday blasted Republicans for using a committee report on the Benghazi attacks for “political purposes” and in particular for what she termed unfair criticism of presumed 2016 Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., noted that the bipartisan report released this week on the Sept. 11, 2012, attacks in Libya did not mention Clinton even once. “I regret that the ‘Additional Views’ of the report adopted solely by six members of the Republican minority unfairly criticizes Secretary Clinton,” Feinstein said in a statement. “I want the record to be clear: I

Saying some neighborhoods have more pot shops than banks, Colorado Democrats on Wednesday rejected a proposal to ban the use of public assistance cards to obtain cash at marijuana-shop ATMs. The Senate State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee voted 3-2 along party lines against a GOP proposal to add marijuana shops to the list of places where recipients of public assistance can’t use their government-issued EBT cards to access cash. The list already includes casinos, liquor stores and gun shops. Sen. Let´s try a thought experiment to test the bounds of fair commentary and editorial responsibility. A film reviewer detests a film that pushes values he sees as un-American in some fashion or other, and notes that the director is Jewish. The reviewer deduces from that one fact that the director´s religion is what produced the the film´s disagreeable values, and then deduces that Jewish control of the media is what allowed the movie to reach theaters in the first place. The reviewer then implies to his readers that Jews should not be allowed in positions of power in the entertainment

Pulp Fiction. Reservoir Dogs. Django Unchained. Kill Bill. Rambo. The movies listed above are among the most violent in the history of cinema. For me, the reviews are a mixed bag, but Pulp is a Top-5 movie of mine of all time, with Shawshank, Wall Street I (the second one was never made…got it? That success has made him one of the most powerful—and easily the most intimidating—force to be reckoned with in Hollywood (net worth estimated at $150 million).

2014 is an election year, but you would never know it judging from the media’s focus in the early days of the new year. The scandal surrounding New Jersey Gov. Since the Bergen Record exposed Christie’s aides taking crass delight in the headaches the closure of portions of the George Washington Bridge had caused a political adversary, the press can focus on little else than the scandal and it’s far-reaching implications. But Christie is not the only potential 2016 presidential candidate being scrutinized in the press. “Can anyone stop

Moved by the October outage of the Electronic Benefits Transfer system in over a dozen states (including Louisiana) — which resulted in many EBT cards showing no credit limits and some beneficiaries reacting by purchasing well beyond their limits — Vitter introduced a bill Wednesday to require food stamp recipients to show a photo ID when making SNAP purchases. “Food Stamps have more than doubled in cost

The incompetence and irresponsibility at Benghazi turns out to be even worse than everyone in Washington thought it was. A bipartisan Senate intelligence committee finds the murder of the American ambassador and three other Americans was preventable, and the explanations the White House first gave for the debacle were lies. This is what the Republicans and other conservatives have been saying for months, derided and disputed by defenders of President Obama, and now these are the on-the-record conclusions of the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee, made up of equal numbers of Democratic and Republican senators. The committee said the State Department was
