The Federal Election Commission flagged Rep. Michael Grimm (R-Staten Island) for receiving excess campaign contributions from House Speaker John Boehner, former VP nominee Paul Ryan and Grimm’s ex-wife’s father. Grimm spokesman Nick Iacono said the campaign is fixing its records after what he called a routine inquiry resulting from clerical errors. “Our campaign will be making the appropriate edits in a timely fashion,” Iacano said. But for Grimm, even accidentally accepting excess campaign cash is notable, a reminder that he remains under federal investigation for allegations that include knowingly accepting illegal contributions during his 2010 campaign.

Immigration reform: surprisingly not dead! That’s the message top House Republicans are sending as the new year kicks off. Speaker John Boehner is working with his caucus this month on a set of “principles” that will guide them in crafting a legislative response to the bipartisan Senate bill that passed long ago. In a very heartening sign for immigration activists, House Judiciary Chair Bob Goodlatte – the caucus’ point man on the issue – suggested to Telemundo on Friday that these principles could include some kind of legalization program for the nation’s undocumented immigrants. That would be a breakthrough for

Mel Watt hadn’t even been sworn in as the head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency when at 9 p.m. on the Friday before Christmas he e-mailed reporters from his personal account saying he would put on hold planned increases in fees Fannie Mae (FNMA) and Freddie Mac (FMCC) charge for insuring mortgage securities. With a three-sentence message, he signaled a break from his predecessor and hinted at how he’ll shape the future of the two firms that guarantee about 60 percent of new U.S. mortgages. Hi, everybody. Yesterday, we learned that in 2013, our businesses created 2.2 million new jobs — including 87,000 last month. Our unemployment rate is the lowest it has been since October 2008. And across our broader economy, there are signs of progress. [Snip] We’ve cut our deficits by more than half. Thanks to the hard work and sacrifice of the American people, our economy is growing stronger. But we know we’ve got more work to do together. It depends on the success of the American people. It depends on your ability to make ends meet and provide for your families.

During a speech Friday at a Texas Public Policy Foundation conference, Sen. Ted Cruz criticized President Obama for lying to Americans when he told them they could keep their health insurance plans and doctors if they liked them. "It was kind of a stuff-burger," Cruz said after mocking the New York Times editorial page for saying that Obama "misspoke" to the American people. "You know there comes a point with the left-wing media, you can´t even make fun of them anymore," Cruz said. "You just simply say what they said." Cruz added that Obama´s administration was surrounded by lawlessness. "There are many, many disturbing

HBO’s True Detective sounds like your average celebrity-studded crime procedural. Yet, buoyed by Matthew McConaughey, it’s one of the most riveting and provocative series ever. Period. Perhaps the only bothersome byproduct of the Great Golden Age of Television we´re currently living in is the fact that all of us now feel compelled to evangelize—incessantly—on behalf of our most beloved shows. How many times has a friend or coworker insisted that You.Have.To.See [Insert Critically Acclaimed Series Here]? (No, seriously—you have to.) Try sidling up to a bar in Brooklyn and announcing that you´ve never seen a single second of The Wire

Like Enron, Greece, and Donald Trump before us, America is about to go bankrupt. Unfortunately, our bankruptcy will probably be more Enron and less Donald Trump because we´re very unlikely to come back bigger and better in the lifetime of anyone reading this column. Instead, most Americans are probably going to experience skyrocketing taxes, spiraling inflation, widespread disorder, and a dramatically reduced standard of living. This isn’t a crisis that our great-grandchildren will have to figure out one day. To the contrary, it´s entirely possible it will occur within the next decade and unless we make big changes no one

ARLINGTON — The leading contenders for governor clashed Thursday on public education, as Democrat Wendy Davis called for more money for teachers and Republican Greg Abbott dismissed her proposals as “fuzzy math.” Davis unveiled a plan that would bring teacher salaries in line with the average pay nationwide. She also proposed guaranteeing high school students interested in becoming teachers a spot in college and a job when they finish their studies. Davis would also enhance a state college-loan repayment program for educators. “Education must be the Number 1 priority we address as a state,” the Fort Worth state senator said during a panel

The pizza arrived, steaming and delectable, a smoked-mozzarella-and-sausage pie presented to Mayor Bill de Blasio like a gilded offering to a visiting caliph. The mayor, on a pilgrimage on Friday to Goodfellas, a venerable Staten Island pizzeria, smiled, nodded at his slice and then proceeded to do the unthinkable: eat it with a knife and fork. Cue the foodie firestorm. “Disaster,” declared a writer at New York magazine, citing the longstanding city protocol of devouring pizza, no matter how greasy, with the hands, and the hands only. One website called it Mr. de Blasio’s first mistake as mayor.

The Obama administration plans to replace the lead contractor on HealthCare.gov, the glitchy federal website that hindered the fall rollout of the new health care law, with another company. Officials plans to drop CGI Federal, after the company took a share of blame for its role in preparing a website that serves 36 states and needed extensive repairs after its Oct. 1 launch, the Washington Post first reported. A major consulting company, Accenture, will take its place. CGI’s contract runs out at the end of February, and Accenture had built the relatively well-functioning health exchange that California is using to enroll people

Sen. Ted Cruz compared America under President Obama to a corrupt dictatorship in which the chief executive decides which laws to follow and which to ignore. He cited the Obama administration delay of the employer mandate under the Affordable Health Care Act. He said the directive to ease deportation of immigrant parents and not to defend the federal ban on marijuana in states like Colorado and Washington that choose to legalize it were other examples of the president’s “consistent pattern of lawlessness.” “If the president of the United States can simply pick and choose which laws to follow… we know

Senate Democrats on Thursday blocked a Republican attempt to restore military pensions cut in last month’s budget deal, denying a vote that would save up to $20 billion by closing a loophole that allows tax refunds to go to illegal aliens. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D., Calif.) called an effort by Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R., N.H.) to repeal the military retiree cuts “fiddling while Rome burns.” Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) “filled the amendment tree” on Thursday, ending debate and blocking any Republican amendments to a bill to extend unemployment insurance (UI) benefits. There haven´t been any reports of public EBT cards being used at marijuana dispensaries. But lawmakers say pot shops should be added to the law to make clear it´s not legal. That’s the gist of a new documentary called “The Mask You Live In,” by feminist filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom. The focus of “The Mask” is the male population’s place in and relationship to American culture. Predictably, judging from the trailer and the film’s enthusiastic reception in left-leaning media, traditional masculinity is a leading cause of murder and mayhem. The trailer opens with commonly heard “macho” phrases like, “Be a man,” “Man up,” and “Don’t be weak,” as taken
