Pennsylvania´s 450 judges are barred from hiring relatives in the future and must bow out of cases in which any of the lawyers have given them substantial campaign donations, according to a new ethics rules imposed by the state Supreme Court on Wednesday. The update of the Code of Judicial Conduct, the first revision since 1992, also requires judges to quit corporate boards. These are among the highlights in a revised code that now stretches to 41 pages - three times the length of the old one. Most of the changes take effect July 1, though judges have until July

The fertility rate of women in the United States fell to a record low for the second year in a row in 2012, according to data released last week by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Also for the second year in a row, 40.7 percent of the babies born in the United States were born to unmarried mothers. The fertility rate is the number of births per 1,000 women aged 15-44. In 2012--according to the Dec. 30, 2013 CDC report “Births: Final Data for 2012"--the U.S. fertility rate was 63.0. That was down from 63.2 in 2011,

The horror rap duo Insane Clown Posse and four fans sued the Justice Department on Wednesday, alleging it was unlawful for the government to classify the group’s fans as a gang. The federal court lawsuit, which also names the FBI as a defendant, is the latest development in a long-running dispute between the group and the government, which classified Insane Clown Posse fans as a gang. Insane Clown Posse fans are called Juggalos and were added to the Justice Department’s gang list. The lawsuit, filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, also wants to block the government “from

President Wants Tea Party

On Wednesday, Tom Donohue, the President and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, vowed to make the Tea Party "feel some heat" in 2014 in order to get amnesty legislation passed. In his "State of American Business" address, Donohue, without directly naming it, said that the Tea Party would face a "significant response" from the Chamber in 2014. He said "early involvement in the primaries is all about where we are going" and emphasized the group will try to make an impact "right from the beginning" in at least ten primary contests. As Breitbart News reported, the Chamber is

Following the unexpected win for the unemployment-insurance extension in the Senate yesterday, House Republicans convened for the first time in 2014, engaging in a spirited internal debate about how the party should proceed on the issue as Democrats press for political advantage on income inequality. GOP lawmakers are brimming with ideas for how to reform unemployment insurance, but they are without a single, clear voice on how to proceed. Speaker John Boehner privately told lawmakers he doubts whether the Senate bill, despite advancing yesterday, will pass the upper chamber, leading some to consider the issue dead. Other Republicans are interested in proposing

3 Reasons Why the Radical Anti-

Today the Drudge Report covers the Justice Department’s racialist attack on school discipline policies. The DOJ policy is based on the idea that school discipline policies are racially discriminatory because black students comprise a greater percentage of students disciplined than their percentage in the general population. Call it exceeding the bad-behavior quota. That this four-year-old federal policy exists wasn’t news. I covered it in my 2011 book Injustice. What is newsworthy is how these radical racialist education policies will outlast the Obama administration, and Republicans are ill-equipped to reverse it even if they win the White House.

This speech, which Senator Marco Rubio delivered today, is well worth your while. Rubio offers a great example of how conservatives should be thinking about poverty in America, and about the conceptual perversity and (resulting) practical inadequacy of our vast array of anti-poverty programs. And he helps us also to see how the Democrats’ misguided emphasis on inequality as the core of that problem opens up real opportunities for Republicans to lay out for the country their vision of the American Dream, and their agenda for helping more Americans achieve it. Rubio also essentially endorses (and apparently plans to propose in legislative

Two veteran Democratic members of Congress have decided to retire at the end of the term, making it tougher for Democratic plans to recapture a House majority this fall. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, a nine-term Democrat from New York, and Rep. Mike McIntyre, a nine-term Democrat from North Carolina, both announced Wednesday that they have had enough. “I have decided not to seek re-election to the United States Congress in 2014,” McCarthy wrote in a statement to campaign supporters. “As I plan for the next chapter of my life, I look forward to resuming my role as a citizen activist for the causes

Poverty: President Obama is so obsessed with income inequality that he´ll make yet another speech on it Thursday. But he´ll do nothing about it. After all, the poor are still with us, only there are more of them than ever. Wednesday marked 50 years since President Lyndon Johnson asked Congress to wage "all-out war on human poverty and unemployment" — a war that´s seen no end, let alone victory, to celebrate. A record 46.5 million Americans are still counted as poor, and the share of those living in poverty — 15% and rising today vs. 19% and falling in 1964 — is

WASHINGTON — Vice President Joe Biden spoke on Wednesday for a second time this week to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, voicing support for the Baghdad government´s effort to regain control of the city of Fallujah from al-Qaida-linked fighters. The White House said Biden encouraged al-Maliki to continue talks with local, tribal and national leaders and said Biden welcomed al-Maliki´s affirmation Wednesday that Iraqi elections will occur as scheduled in April. The White House said al-Maliki described a series of political initiatives in the embattled Anbar province. Biden endorsed a decision by Iraq´s Council of Ministers to provide state benefits to tribal

Mideast: The Obama administration actually thinks Islamofascist Iran could broker peace with its terrorist ally Syria. Of course, Tehran immediately took advantage of this latest example of dangerously naive U.S. appeasement. When Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday that there might be "ways" Iran could "contribute from the sidelines," "weigh in," or "help the process" in the Syrian peace conference in Montreux, Switzerland, to begin later this month, he apparently thought the mullahs would be flattered. Predictably, Tehran responded with more contempt of the Great Satan, complaining that "the Islamic Republic of Iran will not accept any proposal which does not

Forces allied with al-Qaida are battling to retake two major cities in Iraq´s Sunni-dominated Anbar province: Ramadi, the capital of the province, and Fallujah, the city where U.S. troops prevailed after fighting two major battles. There have been no American forces in Iraq since 2011, when President Obama ordered the last troops to leave. Now the man who lost the presidential race to Obama five years ago is pointing a finger at the president for al-Qaida´s resurgence. Some 1,300 U.S. troops died in the area during the Iraq War, and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) says the troops that fought there

A major conceit of the left is that opposing viewpoints aren´t just wrong, they are evil or, at least, morally suspect. Leftists reveal much about themselves when they argue that a conservative´s position is driven only by self-interest or greed. Rather than argue intellectually against a conservative view, they need to discredit it, make it illegitimate and beneath public debate. So too is political speech to argue conservative values. The left has an enormous financial infrastructure to further its views, but conservatives doing the same are using "dark money." As a baby boomer, I remember the health care my parents introduced me to in the years after World War II. Our family was of very modest means and my parents had no insurance, so my mom would take me to my doctor´s little office attached to his house on his working farm and she´d pay him cash when we walked out the door. What happened between was the important part. My doc had a nurse and she´d welcome us and ask the reason for our visit. Robert Gates doesn´t call Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton the Three Blind Mice or Three Stooges defense and foreign policy, but he might as well have. In his upcoming book, "Duty, Memoirs of a Secretary at War," he makes it clear that under this administration competence, not politics, stopped at the water´s edge. As reported

It will also reduce staff behind the scenes, including some merchandise planning positions and central office roles. Michelle Obama and Beyoncé Knowles are both powerful women married to powerful men. They are friends. Their families have spent time together. They praise each other publicly and support each other’s projects. Few would be surprised if Knowles is in town for the first lady’s 50th birthday party later this month. (Beyoncé’s husband, Jay-Z, will be in concert at Verizon Center on Jan. 16, the day before Obama’s birthday.) As their friendship has developed, these two women have — wittingly or not — become markers of 21st-century feminism. “They are incredibly competent women who have not just flourishing careers but

Emails unearthed by NorthJersey.com contradicted Mr. Christie’s prior claims that his administration had nothing to do with the unfolding bridge scandal, and sent the tough-talking Republican into damage control. “What I’ve seen today for the first time is unacceptable,” he said in a late-afternoon

The rule finally hit the pages of the Federal Register today, opening up the formal 60-day period for
