The girl, who identified herself only as Spozhmai, said on Tuesday that her brother told her to "ask the deputy commander for a ride with him to Kunar province. I agreed then he attached the vest on my body and told me to spend the night here and leave in the morning." But she said she refused to carry out the attack the next day. She said her brother promised the police would die but she would live. The girl spoke to television cameras after police detained her on Monday. Colonel Hamidullah Sediqi, a Border Police commander, said that the

U.S. officials suspect a former Guantanamo Bay detainee played a role in the attack on the American compound in Benghazi, Libya, and are planning to designate the group he leads as a foreign terrorism organization, according to officials with the plans.(snip)Qumu also had links to Abu Zubaida, a key al-Qaeda facilitator, who is being held indefinitely at the Guantanamo Bay prison. In 2007, Qumu was sent to Libya, where he was detained. The Libyan government released him in 2008. The United States is offering $10 million for information about the Benghazi attack. Obama Affordable Care Act Hurts

In 2014, 25 million to 30 million Americans who have employer-provided health insurance are likely to lose it, thanks to ObamaCare´s requirement that all plans cover what Washington deems "essential benefits." Some employers will consider that unaffordable and drop coverage altogether, when their current, less-expensive plans expire over the course of the year. These 25 million to 30 million are in addition to 6 million who bought plans in the individual market and had them canceled by Jan. 1. The plight of those 6 million made headline news and caused the first cracks in the Democratic Party´s support for the law.

The latest annual report of the Social Security Board of Trustees projects that the Disability Insurance (DI) portion of the program will run out of funds to pay promised benefits by 2016, or possibly even 2015. That´s because of a 22% increase in disability dependents on the program to 2 million since 2008. America has not suddenly become subject to a rash of disability since 2008. Disability insurance has effectively become a long-term unemployment assistance program enabled by the Obama administration´s abandonment of rational qualification standards. The root of the problem is that DI is a government program governed by political pressures,

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Tuesday it could be a boon for the GOP if Hillary Clinton ran for president in 2016 due to all the “scandal” that surrounds her. The GOP´s campaign chief called Clinton a “very political person who makes decisions based on how the wind blows.” “I’m not sure,” Priebus told CNN when asked if Clinton would be the Democratic nominee in 2016. “But with all of the scandal around her, I’m not so sure it would be all that bad for the Republican Party, to tell you the truth.” The RNC head was reacting to excerpts from

All too often during my 4½ years as secretary of defense, when I found myself sitting yet again at that witness table at yet another congressional hearing, I was tempted to stand up, slam the briefing book shut and quit on the spot. The exit lines were on the tip of my tongue: I may be the secretary of defense, but I am also an American citizen, and there is no son of a * in the world who can talk to me like that. I quit. Find somebody else. It was, I am confident, a fantasy widely shared throughout

Al-Qaeda´s spread unchecked

BEIRUT — The death of Osama bin Laden did not end the spread of al-Qaeda, say analysts. It may have even helped it. The chaos of the Arab Spring revolutions, al-Qaeda´s shift to a more bottom-up structure and a perceived pullback of U.S. influence in the Middle East are behind the spread of America´s No. 1 enemy in the world, say several analysts who study the core group in Pakistan and affiliates who swear allegiance to it. The latest and most stark example came this week in Iraq, where al-Qaeda militants seized control of government buildings and districts of Fallujah

Welfare: Senate Democrats are close to passing a three-month extension of emergency jobless benefits. At the very least, Republicans should refuse to go along unless it´s paid for with spending cuts. Once again, Democrats are styling themselves as the party of compassion by spending money they don´t have and forcing taxes on future generations of workers to pay for it. It´s phony, but they´ve gotten so good at this class-warfare schtick that hey, they just might get away with it again. And not wanting to be seen as Scrooges, the GOP will no doubt eventually go along. But Republicans would do the country

Playoff parties may have one fewer dip option this year. Kraft Foods says some customers may not be able to find Velveeta cheese over the next few weeks. She noted that the lack of availability is more noticeable because of the seasonal demand during the NFL playoffs. The company has been airing TV commercials featuring a recipe for a chili con queso dip made with Velveeta. Moore says it should be

The morning weather map for the eastern half of the U.S. was dotted with lots of small, negative numbers with the Midwest and the East were colder than much of Antarctica. It quickly loses altitude as it passes the camera – fixed inside a truck – and careers into the ground, creating a gigantic fireball. The latest religious edict from Iran´s supreme leader takes aim at the Islamic Republic´s lonely hearts. Online chatting between men and women on social networks is forbidden under Ayatollah Ali Khamenei´s latest fatwa, delivered ironically enough on his website in answer to a question sent by email. The top mullah´s reasoning is that such contact could eventually lead to activities prohibited by Islam. “Given the immorality that often applies to this, it is not permitted,” Khamenei wrote. Khamenei often delivers fatwas on his website, but the latest one could further expose the spiritual and generational rift between the nation´s web-savvy youth and the

Botched deadlines and sloppy governance are hallmarks of Barack Obama´s presidency. Every president is required by statute to submit a budget proposal for the upcoming fiscal year by the first Monday in February. For the fifth time in six years, Obama will fail to meet this core governing responsibility (via Congressional Quarterly): The White House is said to be at least a month behind its own schedule for developing a fiscal 2015 budget, which by statute is supposed to be submitted to Congress on the first Monday in February. That will slow work on next year’s spending bills, even though

The life and times of Bill de Blasio, the new mayor of New York City, reads like a satire from the typewriter of Evelyn Waugh. His Honor could have been a minor character in “Scoop,” Waugh’s classic send-up of newspaper journalism and bungling do-gooders stumbling across the margins of the real world. He’s a perfect fit in the scurvy precincts of Gotham’s radical left-wing politics. Unlike his predecessor, Michael Bloomberg, Mr. de Blasio has never had a real job, preferring the fun and games of political campaigns and hanging on at City Hall, where making trouble for people is a profitable
