President Obama‘s and First Lady Michelle Obama‘s vacations have long been a topic of particular fascination for some media outlets, and a detail about their latest hiatus came up at the end of Monday’s White House daily briefing. As White House Press Secretary Jay Carney tried to scoot off to a 2 pm meeting with the President and his advisers, Fox News Chief White House Correspondent Ed Henry cut in to ask Carney if the President would be paying for Mrs. Obama’s flight home, since her extended vacation is an early birthday present. “The First Lady stayed behind in Hawaii,

A few minutes ago, I watched that great TV commercial about our wounded warriors. It inspires you! It also reminds us that war has a huge human price. We lost a young man in our church in Iraq. One of my son´s high school buddies lost a leg in Afghanistan. It also makes you furious when you watch it in the context of what is happening in Iraq. In 2011, President Obama was all about running for reelection with troops out of Iraq. It was all about keeping a promise, even though Iraq had ceased to be much of an

Amid the relentless push for more gun control in 2013, there were 21,093,273 background checks for firearm purchasers. The NRA sent Breitbart News a breakdown and comparison of this number against the numbers from previous years, and a record-setting trend is evident. For example, the number of 2013 background checks is nearly two million more than the previous record – 19,592,303 in 2012 – and it far exceeds the 14,033,824 background checks performed during Obama´s first year in office. Although the Christmas season provided only an "average" boost to gun sales last year, December sales were higher than those of

His agenda tattered by last year´s confrontations and missteps, President Barack Obama begins 2014 clinging to the hope of winning a lasting legislative achievement: an overhaul of immigration laws. It will require a deft and careful use of his powers, combining a public campaign in the face of protests over his administration´s record number of deportations with quiet, behind-the-scenes outreach to Congress, something seen by lawmakers and immigration advocates as a major White House weakness. In recent weeks, both Obama and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, have sent signals that raised expectations among overhaul supporters that 2014 could still yield

McDonald´s slogan du jour is "I´m lovin´ it." "It," of course, refers to the voluminous gut one grows by consistently dining at the iconic fast-food joint. But "it" doesn´t have to be like that. Last fall, John Cisna -- a science teacher from Des Moines, Iowa -- ate nothing but McDonald´s for 90 days and wound up losing 37 pounds! Hold the mustard! How the heck can that be right? Here´s how: With the help of three of his students, Cisna simply planned and followed a diet that totaled no more than 2,000 calories each day and closely mirrored the reference daily

A ship trapped in ice near Antarctica once would have been a matter for worry. Today you have to at least smile at the plight of the Russian ship Akademik Shokalskiy, trapped with a passenger list of tourists and scientists trying to confirm that Antarctic ice is shrinking. Ah, the irony is rich. The 52 passengers were evacuated after seven days to an Australian icebreaker a few miles away using a helicopter from a Chinese icebreaker, also nearby. Neither would-be rescue ship could get close to the Akademik Shokalskiy. A crew of 18 remained, presumably to wait for less ice

Where have all the Democrats gone? It’s hard to imagine a better gift falling into their laps: Republicans have just thrown 1.3 million unemployed Americans out into the cold and are prepared to cut off 3.6 million others who are out of work. At a time when the long-term unemployment rate remains near its highest level since the Great Depression and there are three job-seekers for every opening, this seems unusually cruel.

Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) have wrongly and outrageously cut the budget on the backs of the U.S. military. On December 26 President Obama signed a new bipartisan bill that includes a $6 billion cut from military members´ retirement. These cuts to COLA (cost-of-living adjustments) also affect medically retired veterans, including those wounded in combat. American Thinker interviewed those who are directly affected. Amongst Congress and the president there is always the talk of how those serving, past and present need to be admired for their sacrifices. On Sunday, Mitt Romney accepted Harris-Perry´s "heartfelt" apology, noting, "I´ve made plenty of mistakes myself." I´ve watched the offending segment several times now. I can see how a white parent who´d adopted a black child (or vice versa) would find the segment flip and offensive. It was on December 4, 2013 that President Obama opened the Year of Inequality with his speech on economic mobility. A month later liberal hounds are baying for extended unemployment benefits and higher minimum wage, and conservatives are drawing up lists of what liberals know that ain´t so. Here is John Hawkins´ enumeration of how liberal inequality politics hurts the poor. 1. Minimum wage prices poor out of jobs. 2. Minimum wage makes people comfortable, not succeed. 3. More government equals more economic stagnation. 4. More inequality programs make it harder to get ahead. 5. Inequality politics ignores real causes of poverty. And here is John C.

The basic foreign policy principles of various presidencies have been dubbed "doctrines." In most cases such "doctrines" are gleaned from the practices of a given president´s foreign policy and pieced together from various official documents and even memos. One notable exception being the Monroe Doctrine which was put forward as a public doctrine and a warning to European countries. Introduced on December 2, 1823, in President Monroe´s state of the union speech, it basically warned European nations to butt out of South America and the Americas generally. In return the US would butt out of European affairs. By contrast the Bush

MSNBC has had a hard time lately. The network fired Martin Bashir and Alec Baldwin for craziness, on-air and off-air respectively. Melissa Harris-Perry was forced to apologize, first on Twitter and then, tearfully, on the air, for making political hay out of Mitt Romney’s adopted grandson. The network put Ed Schulz out to pasture, and most people wrote Chris Matthews off as a hysteric long ago, so that pretty much leaves Rachel Maddow–amazingly enough–as MSNBC’s supposed voice of sanity. Eliana Johnson has reported on Maddow’s status as the “queen” of MSNBC, who wields more control than anyone else over the

If you spend any significant amount of time talking to conservative activists who oppose Obamacare, you’ll eventually hear some variant on the theory that Obamacare was never meant to work. Instead, it was meant to destroy the existing health care system, and in the process pave the way for liberals to step in with the comprehensive health care fix the far left has always really longed for: single payer. There’s often a hint of conspiracy surrounding the accusation, as if President Obama and the White House senior staff had hatched some meticulous plot to spend a year struggling to pass a

It´s a heady time for defenders of former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden. In the closing days of 2013, the NSA´s surveillance program took two huge perceived hits, first in a preliminary ruling from U.S. District Court Judge Richard Leon and later from President Obama´s Review Group on Intelligence and Communications Technologies. The editorial boards of The New York Times and the Guardian rang in the new year with full-throated defenses of Snowden and advocated in support of clemency or a pardon. No, don’t fire MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry. MSNBC now admits that “MSNBC has had an editorial and script review process in place” when it comes to their shows. Meaning: apparently the network saw the controversial Romney adoption piece ahead of time that has now backfired on Harris-Perry… and approved it. The better thing to do? Ask this question. Why is liberalism racist? That liberalism is racist is well beyond question. A horrific history of supporting slavery, segregation, lynching, and the Ku Klux Klan has morphed today into the relatively pacific if no less poisonous perpetual race-card playing of modern progressives. The eruption of a “supervolcano” hundreds of times more powerful than conventional volcanoes – with the potential to wipe out civilisation as we know it – is more likely than previously thought, a study has found. An analysis of the molten rock within the dormant supervolcano beneath Yellowstone National Park in the United States has revealed that an eruption is possible without any external trigger, scientists said. Scientists previously believed many supervolcanic eruptions needed earthquakes to break open the Earth’s crust so magma could escape. But new research suggests that this can happen as a result of the build-up of pressure. Supervolcanoes represent

They are convinced that those of us who oppose the law can do no more than temporarily obstruct it, and that the benefits it is starting to bring to the American public will ultimately make it popular and then unchallenged. In reality, Obamacare remains an unpopular law with deep flaws. It is performing much
